Dina
I held my breath throughout as we finally arrived back at my apartment building. I fought back the urge to grit my teeth as I looked up at it.
Throughout the entirety of the ride, I had spaced out, barely speaking to him or given any directions. It was only now that it hit me properly.
That meant that he'd known my address this whole time.
I closed my eyes to compose myself and took a deep breath in. I wasn't going to get into the reasons why or how at this moment. I probably shouldn't even know in the first place. It was already bad enough that I'd gone through this turmoil.
Married.
What the hell was I getting myself into?
“Are you going to come down or…”
I snapped my eyes open and nearly rolled them in the swift irritation that came forth if I wasn't so mortified.
The car had stopped and there was no real reason for me to be here. I must truly be a glutton for punishment if the near kiss wasn't enough.
Heat rushed to my cheeks. Thankfully with my face turned towards the window there would be no way for him to see it.
I stepped out without hesitation, letting the cool breeze brush through my face.
“Goodnight.” I said tersely without looking back.
“Isn't there something you're missing, WIFE?”
This ass—
‘Calm down,’ I thought to myself. There was no use getting unfettered now. I was just mostly keyed up from the turmoil of the ‘wedding’
I sucked in a breath, snapping the composure and patience I’d borne so many times already with him.
Thankfully with the cold air reaching my cheeks the flush was no doubt gone.
“TEMPORARY wife,” I snapped, turning to him while emphasizing the former word.
“Same difference for now.” Luther said. He still sat in his car, looking smug as if he hadn't been the one begging me just the day before for a marriage.
‘Screw it.’ I
“What else?” I asked. To my surprise, he didn't tease any longer.
“You’ll have to prepare to move your things into my house.”
What the…
“Excuse me?” I snapped in disbelief. This wasn't discussed in our agreement last night.
Luther, as always, didn't even look bothered. His lips curled into what looked like a failed attempt at an apologetic smile.
“I thought about it. It's the best possible outcome.” he nodded to himself.
“I would have believed that it wasn't necessary.” I stated harshly.
“Well yes,” he replied with a flourish of his hand,
“But how do you expect them to believe that we're married if. What if they barge into my home and see me still living the bachelor life? Our ruse would be over, just like that.”
He snapped his fingers after, looking at me. I felt the expectation in his gaze.
Unbelievable.
“What kind of people are your family anyways? ” I snapped, my frustration boiling over..
‘Now that I think about it, have I met them?’
I could vaguely recall that I had rarely met them in high school. While his presence was a constant bother, those of his family members remained elusive. In anyone else's eyes, it would seem like he was completely alone.
Who would be so nosy to barge into someone else's life? Hell, what kind of family would demand something to push him into a fake marriage?
I half expected him to fire back with another quip or a snarky comment about how he couldn't let go of the women on his roster but instead, the atmosphere suddenly turned cooler.
His jaw clenched, tension suddenly in it. What was going on?
I watched as his demeanor shifted dramatically. His body tensed, his muscles seeming to lock into place, and his face grew serious and cold. The warmth and arrogance that usually danced in his eyes froze, replaced by a glacial intensity.
I nearly took a step back from the sudden shift.
