Dina
I must have been hearing things. I blinked once, twice but the words didn’t change.
‘Marry me…’
“What?”
If I was thinking straight I would have been more outraged and not given a stupid answer.
He sighed, shaking his head
“Relax, it's not going to be a real marriage. Well, not technically,” he shrugged, slipping out of his desk
“I’m offering you a deal. A contract marriage if you will. We get married for one year and get divorced. That's it.”
He made it sound so clinical and easy even if it was anything but.
“Why?” I asked,
“I can't explain much, but it's for…family reasons.” He said, clenching his jaw. It looked like a sore subject for him.
What kind of family reasons would push someone to get married? I wondered with my brows furrowed. Maybe I was overthinking things. I knew nothing about how rich families worked.
But it didn't answer the question of why he asked me?
“There are plenty of women who would bend over backwards to please you.” I said,
“Trust me, I know,” he said and it took a while for his innuendo to hit. Before I could react he spoke again.
“But it's you I need.”
My breath hitched and warmth curled in my belly. Why did him saying that make me feel this way?
“You should be happy,” he said, snapping me out of my thoughts.
“This is a dream come true for many women after all. They'll pay to even touch me, although I won't do that with you even if you paid me.”
It was like I was dropped in an ice bucket. The hateful feelings I had returned in full force.
He was an asshole.
“I'm done here,” I snapped, turning away to leave “ Go find someone who is willing to deal with your whims.”
“Wait. I'll pay you.” he called out behind me.
“And what if I refuse, will you fire me too?” I spat bitterly.
And the horrid truth was that he could. He was the CEO and he called the shots while I could be replaced at his whims.
If this was the way I was going to go down, then so be it.
I reached out for the door-
“5 Million dollars.”
I froze. His words stopped me in place. I should have been strong yet I was still so weak.
I turned around, but there was no victory in his face, only what looked like desperation.
“I'll pay you five million dollars to go along with this. After that we can part ways and you can leave. Please, I need this.” he begged.
I was doing this. I was actually getting married, and to Luther of all the people.
Luther, the boy who constantly bullied and humiliated me through school. The same man who had cornered and coerced me into working under him so he could torment me.
No matter how fake or temporary it was, it wouldn’t change the fact that for the next year, I would technically legally be his wife.
I felt catatonic through the entire process, the words of the priest floated through my ears.
After signing the documents, a clap came from beside me.
“I declare you both, husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.” the priest said
I faltered at the mention of ‘kissing’. I should have expected it, but kissing him?
‘No.’ Instant regret came upon me. I should have never agreed to this. I tried to draw away but his grip was too firm, keeping me in place. I was helpless to watch him as he leaned in.
‘No!’
I braced myself for the impact chuting my eyes to erase the thoughts. For a moment I felt his breath brush my face and then…nothing.
I opened my eyes to find him back in his place, raising his eyebrow arrogantly.
“Were you expecting me to kiss you Miss Summers?” he smirked, “You’ll have to pay for that, and you can't afford it.”
Annoyance sparked inside me and the urge to slap him returned.
Yet I looked down at my hand to find the ring there, all emotions faded aside from the dread and cold realization.
What had I gotten myself into?
