**Cynthia’s POV**

Three years of living in Paris, of therapy, of learning to breathe without the weight of eight yearsworth of resentment crushing my chest. Everything felt different when you weren’t drowning.

Are you nervous?Kevin asked, glancing over at me from the driver’s seat. First day as a visiting professor and all that?

Terrified,I admitted. But not in a bad way. Justanticipation.

He smiled. You’ve conquered everything else. A lecture hall full of students should be easy.

If only he knew.

The university had invited me to stay for the semester, and while part of me wanted to refuse to avoid returning to the city where I’d been broken the larger part of me knew I couldn’t run forever. Missford was part of my story. And now, so was my triumph.

But first, I needed clothes that felt like armor, something to make me stand out and not look like a doormat.

We should go to Stamford Department Store,I’d suggested to Kevin over breakfast. I need something appropriate for a professor,

Kevin had agreed immediately, of course. My brothers would agree to almost anything if it meant spending time with me. The guilt of losing me for twenty years ran deep.

But no security team,” I’d added as we pulled out of the mansion. Please. I’m trying to feel normal for once.

He’d reluctantly agreed, though he’d insisted on wearing sunglasses a small concession to his celebrity status. As an F1 driver, he was recognized everywhere. Even in sunglasses, he drew second glances. 1

Now, as we stepped into Stamford Department Store, I felt the familiar pull of luxury retail and the subtle scent of money and

expectation.

A sales associate approached immediately, her name tag reading Hailey. She was young, maybe midtwenties, with the kind of practiced smile that service workers perfected.

How can I help you today?she asked, her eyes briefly assessing us before settling into professional courtesy.

Just looking around,” Kevin said, already moving toward the designer section.

Hailey drifted back to her register with a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. I’d worked retail briefly during college and I recognized that energy. She’d already judged us. We’d either spend money or we’d waste her time.

Kevin picked up a cashmere sweater, navy with a subtle logo pattern. What do you think of this, Cici? Would you like one?

Brother, don’t be so exaggerated.I smiled at him despite the familiar flutter of embarrassment. Keep a low profile, okay? People are staring.

He gave me that look

the you deserve to be stared atlook. It still made me uncomfortable sometimes, this idea that I deserved admiration just by existing.

I walked through the store, examining the new season’s collection. The pieces were beautiful but impersonal, designed by committee for a demographic that cared more about labels than quality. After spending three years learning from the best chefs in the world, after building a restaurant where every element mattered, this felt hollow.

After fifteen minutes, I’d made a decision.

Let’s go,I said. There’s nothing I like here.

I turned toward the exit, Kevin following.

If you don’t have money to buy anything, just tell me. You’ve made our clothes dirty by touching them. The attendant, Hailey called back.

I stopped.

Kevin’s entire body went still. What did you say?.

He turned to face her, and Hailey still looked very unremorseful

Poor people shouldn’t come to luxury goods counters.Hailey doubled down, her tone dripping with disdain. Look at the tattered clothes you’re wearing. And you still dare to shop here at Stamford Hall?

Kevin’s eyebrow rose. I knew that expression. It was the one he wore right before he did something spectacular on the track, that moment of controlled intensity right before the turn.

Interesting,he said softly. Now, take off all the clothes we just touched.

Who remembers which clothes you touched?Hailey laughed, but there was an edge of panic in it now.

Kevin pulled out a black card, I don’t want to repeat myself,he said.

I put a hand on his arm, trying to soften him. Kevin

But Hailey was already committed to her mistake. Tsk, so you’re just pretending to be rich. I guess the black card is fake. What good will pretending do poor people like you?She smiled smugly. You brought your girlfriend here to look but not buy anything, and you’ve probably stained our clothes. Stupid man.

Something inside me crystallized.

Did she just call my brother stupid? This bitch just stepped on the wrong foot. 1

I’d spent eight years apologizing for existing and making myself smaller, quieter and feeling less important. Eight years in a house where my presence was an inconvenience, my voice an interruption.

I was done.

I turned around slowly, and I watched Hailey’s confidence flicker as she registered my expression.

Pardon?I said. Say that again.

A stupid and poor man,she repeated, though her voice wavered slightly.

I walked toward her, my movements deliberate and measured. Kevin had moved to let me pass, and I could teel the shift in his energy, from angry to intrigued. This was my moment to claim.

First of all,I said, my voice icecold, he’s wearing designer couture. That shirt is Hermès. Those jeans are Tom Ford His watch costs more than your three years salary. You do not know that because you obviously do not have one.1

Hailey’s face started to pale.

Second,I continued, I need to speak to your manager. Not Just the store manager. The regional manager at Stamford’s headquarters.

Who do you think you are?Halley’s laugh was nervous now, defensive. Stamford manager?

I smiled. Tell them that the heir apparent to the Laurent family wants to speak with them and I want to see them here in five

minutes.

Hailey stared at me like I’d grown a second head. The heir to the Laurent family? You?

I held her gaze while Kevin pulled out his phone. The casual certainty in the movement, like he was used to commanding people’s attention.

Mr. Stamford,Kevin said into the phone, his French accent suddenly prominent, authoritative. My sister and I have been discriminated against in your flagship store. I’m demanding you appear here within five minutes, or I’ll be filing a formal complaint with your corporate office and ensuring every major luxury retailer in Europe knows about this incident.

He listened to the response, then hung up.

Five minutes,he said to me, then turned to Hailey. Now we wait.

The store had gone quiet. Other customers pretended not to watch, but they were watching. Staff members exchanged glances. Hailey stood frozen, her face cycling through panic, disbelief, and the dawning realization that she’d made a catastrophic mistake.
