Chapter 139
Ethan’s POV
“I feel left in the dark,” Devian said. “And I don’t like it. What the fuck is happening? Did you two get into a fight? Or is this something much worse?”
The question still hung in the air, unanswered, heavy with suspicion and irritation, but I already knew I couldn’t stay here and dissect this mess with them hovering over me like judges waiting to pass a sentence.
“I need to step out,” I said finally, breaking the silence. “I’m going to Anna’s apartment.”
Both Devian and Bryan reacted at once.
Devian straightened. “Now?”
“Yes. Now,” I replied flatly. “This isn’t something I can handle through intermediaries or lawyers. Whatever she’s trying to pull, it ends today.”
Bryan didn’t say anything. He just watched me with that same cold, unreadable expression that had been following me since the moment I walked into the house.
I was curious as to where Amber was and I had to confirm he was home, I raised my voice slightly. “Amber.”
A few seconds later, footsteps padded down the stairs. Amber appeared in the hallway, phone pressed to his ear, brows furrowed in concentration as he listened to whoever was on the other end.
He stopped when he saw me. “Daddy?”
I frowned instinctively. “Who are you on the phone with?”
He pointed at the phone with his free hand. “Mom.”
Relief washed through me. I crossed the space between us. “Did she get home safely?”
Amber nodded, then spoke back into the phone. “Yeah, Daddy’s asking if you’re okay.”
A pause. He listened, then smiled. “She says yes.”
Good.
Amber tilted his head, curiosity already sparking. “Daddy… where are you coming from? You’re still on same tuxedo from yesterday evening.”
I hesitated for half a second, aware that Devian and Bryan were still in the living room, very much within earshot.
Amber’s eyes lit up immediately. “You didn’t come home last night, did you?”
“No,” I agreed.
“So where were you?” he asked, lowering his voice conspiratorially, like he was about to uncover a secret.
I didn’t lower mine.
“I was with your mom.”
I heard the sharp intake of breath behind me, sensed the sudden stillness from the living room.
Amber’s eyes widened. “You were?”
“Yes. At the beach house.”
Amber gasped so dramatically it would’ve been funny if I hadn’t been acutely aware of my audience. “The beach house?!”
“Yes,” I said calmly.
He spun back toward the phone immediately, excitement bubbling over. “Mom! Daddy says you were both at the beach house!”
I turned slightly.
Devian had frozen mid-step, one hand braced on the back of the couch. Bryan’s posture stiff, his face darkening by the second. They were both curious and eager to know if i was bluffing.
Amber listened, his grin stretching wider.
Bryan didn’t say a word. His jaw was clenched so tightly I could see the muscle twitching.
I met his gaze deliberately.
“And you know,” I added casually, unable to resist the edge in my voice, “what husbands and wives usually do when they’re alone in a vacation house, don’t you?”
That did it.
Without a word, Bryan grabbed his jacket and stormed toward the door.
“Bryan,” Devian called after him. “Wait…”
The door slammed shut before Devian could finish.
He stood there for a second, stunned, then turned back to me slowly.
“What the hell was that?” he demanded.
I shrugged, a faint, unapologetic grin tugging at my lips. “I don’t know.”
Devian stared at me like he was reevaluating everything he thought he knew. “What’s wrong with the both of you? Jeez!”
“Ask him, he drew the line”
Devian cursed under his breath, then turned and rushed after Bryan. “Bryan, wait up!”
Their voices faded down the driveway.
The mansion fell quiet again.
It’s time to put an end to Anna’s gimmicks and win Cynthia back.
