My chest tightened.
Amber was probably still hurting. Still trying to understand why his mother had abandoned him again.
I should check on him later, I can’t keep avoiding him. I will check on him after I’d figured out what to say to comfort him.
I pushed open the door to my study and set my phone on the desk, already reaching for my laptop. When it buzzed, someone was calling, before I could reach for the phone,….
“MR. WALKER!”
The scream came from upstairs. The house keeper’s voice pitched high with terror drifting my attention from the ringing phone.
“MADAME! COME QUICKLY!”
I dropped everything and ran.
My feet pounded up the stairs, taking them two at a time. The hangover, the headache, the exhaustion all of it forgotten. Only the fear remained.
“What happened?” I shouted as I reached the second floor. “Where…”
“Here! Master Amber’s room!”
I burst through Amber’s door and the world stopped.
She was on the floor, holding Amber in her arms, shaking him desperately. His body was limp. His face was pale, almost gray. His lips had a faint blue tinge.
“He won’t wake up!” Mrs Daniels sobbed. “I came to check on him and he was on the floor! He won’t wake up, Mr. Walker!”
“Amber!” I was across the room in an instant, dropping to my knees beside them. “Amber, can you hear me? Amber!”
No response. His eyes stayed closed. His body stayed limp.
I grabbed his wrist, searching for a pulse. He was breathing, but barely.
“What happened?” Grace appeared in the doorway. “What’s wrong with him?”
I lifted Amber into my arms, he was so light, so fragile, when had he gotten so thin?– and ran. Down the stairs, through the foyer, out the front door.
What had happened? Had he hit his head? Was he sick? Had he taken something?
The thought stopped my heart.
What if he’d done something to himself?
What if the pain of his mother’s abandonment, the crushing disappointment
