Chapter 65

Cynthia’s POV

The moment the plane touched down in Missford, I was already unbuckling my seatbelt.

I hadn’t slept. Despite Nikolai’s words, despite Julian’s medical advice, despite my own body screaming for rest1 couldn’t. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Amber’s face. Heard the words hospitalechoing in my head.

Nathaniel was waiting for me at the private terminal, leaning against his black Mercedes with his arms crossed. He looked as polished as ever but his eyes were soft with concern when he saw me.

You look terrible,he said by way of greeting.

Thanks,I muttered, climbing into the passenger seat. Just what every woman wants to hear.

He slid behind the wheel and pulled out of the airport. I’m serious, Cici. When’s the last time you slept? Or ate?

I’ll sleep when I know Amber’s okay.

Nathaniel sighed but didn’t push. He knew better.

We drove in silence for a few minutes before he spoke again.

Was Kevin able to check on Amber?

Nathaniel gave a scoff, He went to the hospital but didn’t get to see Amber

My stomach dropped. Huh? Why? What happened?

Ethandidn’t take it well.

What happened?

He called security. Had Kevin escorted out before he could even see Amber.

I closed my eyes, the weight of it pressing down on me. They still think he’s my lover.

They think you sent your boyfriend to check on your son instead of coming yourself.Nathaniel’s voice was carefully neutral. Devian apparently called him a gigolo. Kevin almost punched him.Nathaniel laughed, but it wasn’t funny to me.

goodness

I talked him down. Reminded him that assault charges wouldn’t look great for his sponsorships.A ghost of a smile crossed Nathaniel’s face. You know how Kevin is. Hotheaded.

I know.

I stared out the window, watching Missford blur past.

At least Amber seems okay,Nathaniel added. Anna and Grace showed up at the hospital with food for him. So he’s conscious, eating, being looked after.

That should have been a relief. And it was, partially. But the thought of Anna and Grace being the ones caring for my son while I was thousands of miles away made me feel sick.

What had they told him? What poison had they dripped into his ears about me?

We pulled up to Missford General Hospital, and Nathaniel stopped the car but kept the engine running.

I should go,I said, reaching for the door handle. Before they see us together and think I’m two timing with another man.

Nathaniel laughed at that. The scandal, Cynthia Walker and her harem of wealthy men.

It’s not funny.

It’s a little funny. But his expression sobered quickly, Call me when you’re ready to come home. We’ll talk about the culprit then. And Cici?He caught my hand before I could open the door. You’re a good mother. Don’t let them make you believe otherwise.

I squeezed his hand, blinking back the tears that threatened to fall.

Thank you.

Your security detail are on their way, give them a call when you need to leave

I got out of the car and watched him drive away, leaving me alone in front of the hospital.

Alone with my fear and uncertainty.

I stood there on the sidewalk, staring up at the building where my son lay in some unknown ward, and reality crashed over me like a wave.

How was I supposed to face Ethan? He thought I was a terrible mother. He’d called security on Kevin just for showing up.

How was I supposed to face Amber? After missing our meeting, after being absent for three years. What could I possibly say or do to make any of this feel a little less awkward?

And Anna and Grace had probably gotten enough opportunity to fill his head with stories about how his mother had abandoned him, how she didn’t love him, how she’d chosen her career and her boyfriendsover her own child.
