She glided through the pool as she belonged there, diving deep and staying under for ages before surfacing on the other side in a single, effortless breath.
Lucas had already caught on to her secret.
I can’t let Jeremiah find out about this, Lucas thought.
Even though Jessica’s words sounded a bit off, Lucas didn’t think too much about it After all, this was exactly what he wanted.
As long as they made Hathaway out to be the poor victim, Jeremiah wouldn’t press the issue any further.
Hathaway left completely drenched, looking like a total mess. Her soaked feet slipped on the cold stone tiles, making her stumble and letting out a barely audible sound.
Jeremiah paused, about to glance back.
But Jessica was quicker. She linked her arm with his affectionately, her eyes calm as she gave him a gentle shake. Jeremiah, I signed up for a racing competition.”
“Racing?” Jeremiah echoed.
“Yeah, it starts in two months,” Jessica replied.
Hathaway forced herself into the car, grabbing tissues and frantically wiping the water from her face and neck. The tissues quickly got soaked and crumpled in her hand.
She was so cold that her teeth were chattering. She cranked up the heat and sped home.
When she got home, only Joe was there. Seeing her drenched, he panicked. “Hathaway, what happened to you?”

With Jeremiah handing them several projects, Melanie and her crew got cocky and started talking trash to Sylvia at the sanatorium, to mess with her.
This time, Hathaway went out of her way to hire two tough, reliable maids to take care of Sylvia.
She made sure the sanatorium was locked down tight, like a fortress. Hathaway figured as long as she kept everyone under watch, her mom would be safe and sound.
But it wasn’t long before the sanatorium called, the voice on the other end frantic.
They said Sylvia was acting weird, calling out for Hathaway again and again, totally out of it. She couldn’t recognize anyone.
Hathaway shot to her feet, her face draining of all color.
She grabbed her coat and bolted out the door, her heart squeezed tight by a cold, icy hand. Even her breath came out in panicked gasps.
“What happened?” Hathaway blurted out as she rushed into the sanatorium. “Did anyone see my mom?”
Sylvia was curled up on the bed, her eyes vacant. When she saw Hathaway come in, she finally reacted, grabbing Hailaway’s hand and holding on tight.
“How could Mom, who was perfectly fine, suddenly have a mental breakdown? Hathaway thought.
The maid went pale and shook her head quickly. “No, really, no one. We’ve been by her side the whole time. Other than Celeste and the doctors and nurses, nobody else has been in.”
Hathaway’s gut twisted with a wave of dread. “Where’s my mom’s phone?”
