Chapter 157
Eleanor asked Lorenzo if he wanted to marry Hathaway, and to her surprise, he actually agreed
The next day, Eleanor paid a visit to Sylvia at the Whitmore residence.
Sylvia knew the reason those two were getting married now was probably because of the 30% stake in the company, but she couldn’t figure out why the Blackwood family was bringing this up now
She’d thought they’d wait until Jeremiah tied the knot.
Wait, is Jeremiah getting married?‘ Sylvia wondered.
RE
Sylvia turned Eleanor down on the spot. “That 30% stake? The Whitmore family never cared about it, and we never took it seriously.
“Marriage isn’t a business deal, and we shouldn’t let our kids stake their entire lives on a business
arrangement.
Eleanor went back and told Lorenzo that Sylvia had turned them down.
Lorenzo shrugged it off. He was still young, and honestly, marriage was something he never really gave much thought to.
When Hathaway heard about it, she was honestly baffled. She went to school to find Lorenzo.
Lorenzo was busy in the lab when she arrived. He glanced up, his tone earnest, “Give me a minute.
Hathaway waited in the lab, her eyes scanning his desk. Suddenly, she froze. There was a clear glass bottle filled with white powder sitting right there.
“What’s this?” she asked.
“Don’t touch it!” Lorenzo called out, stopping her before she could reach for it.
Lorenzo was quick to shout. He carefully picked up the bottle and locked it away in a cabinet, looking a bit
nervous
After washing his hands, Lorenzo smiled at Hathaway and said. “This is a slow–acting poison called methamin sand.
“If you take too much, your voice gets raspy, your vocal cords get wrecked, your red blood cells drop, and in the end, you stop breathing, and your heart stops
Hathaway’s smile froze on her face.
In her previous life. Hathway had cried until she had no tears left, and then she stupperlening.
But after she stopped eating her health actually started to improve

SO
That made her start to suspect something, so she went to the hospital for a check–up. That was when the found out she’d been drugged for years. The doctors found traces of a slow–acting poison in her blood
It was methanxin sand, so obscure that nobody had heard of it before on the market.
Thanks to her uncle’s connections, she finally managed to dig up bits and pieces about this rare poison in some obscure foreign medical journals.
Who says there’s no such thing as a perfect crime? Hathaway thought.
Hathaway’s mind went completely blank, disbelief flooding her. “How do you have this? Did your brother give it to you?”
“No, it’s mine, Lorenzo said. “I use it for my experiments.”
Hathaway stared at him, disbelief in her voice. “No way. This has to be your brother’s.”
Lorenzo shot her a confused look. “My brother doesn’t know the first thing about medicine”
That was one of the rare things Jeremiah was totally clueless about.
“But he knows how to poison people. You must’ve given it to him.” Hathaway pressed.
Lorenzo looked up, confused. ‘I didn’t give it to him”
Maybe not now, but what about later? Hathaway thought. ‘Besides, if Jeremiah really wanted to drug me, he’d never get his little brother involved. He’d definitely find another way to get his hands on the poison.
Hathaway pressed her hand to her forehead, surprised to find it drenched in sweat. She couldn’t bring herself to admit what she was thinking.
“Hathaway, are you feeling okay? Lorenzo asked.
He handed her a bottle of water. Hathaway unscrewed the cap, raised it to her lips, then closed it again without taking a sip. “Let’s go eat, Lorenzo. I’m starving.”
No way. Hathaway thought. Lorenzo’s never had any beef with me. I’ve never crossed him. If he really wanted to poison me, why would he straight up tell me what the stuff’s called?
Hathaway quickly pushed that thought aside.
What really freaked Hathaway out was realizing Lorenzo actually knew about this poison too. It was tour rouch for her to take in
They headed to a restaurant rieur campus, like they always did, and ordered live dishes. Normally, Hathaway would let Lorenzo pick three of his favorites and add two of hers.
Bor stday, she rauled off the five most popular dishes to the waiter without thinking
“Lorenzo, why did you agree to get tried Hathaway asked

Lorenzo knew this was exactly why Hathaway had come to see him, and she seemed really worried about it
“Because you’ve always been so good to me,” Lorenzo said with a bright smile.
Hathaway asked. “Wasn’t there someone else who used to be really good to your
Lorenzo’s smile froze on his face.
“Lorenzo, why?” Hathaway pressed.
Lorenzo looked at her, his face blank. “Why what?”
Hathaway said, “You were the one behind Jessica’s car accident. Why did you do that to her?”
Lorenzo knew this day would come sooner or later. He poured himself a glass of water, his expression icy
Lorenzo said, “When I was in middle school, my mom hired a tutor for me. She was seven years older than
me
“She came from a regular family and worked part–time jobs to pay her tuition. She was beautiful, ambitious had her own dreams, and there was this vibrant energy about her.
I thought she had a thing for me, but it turned out she was actually into my brother.
“When she confessed to my brother, he said some really cruel things to her. She couldn’t handle it, dashed out, and in that moment she was gone for good.
“I kept thinking, if he’d been a little kinder, maybe she’d still be here.
Lorenzo gripped his glass so hard his knuckles turned white. “She had such a bright future ahead of her. Her parents were waiting for her to graduate and take care of them, but all of that was ruined because of my brother.
“I know how powerful he is. If he sets his mind to something, nothing in this world can stop him. There’s almost nothing he can’t make happen.”
Hathaway’s gaze turned icy as she stared at him. “So you targeted the women he cared about?”
Lorenzo dropped his eyes, letting out a bitter laugh. “Whenever my brother falls for someone, I wish she were dead
Hathaway kept quiet, staring at him
“So now you know the truth, Lorenzo said. “She was the first woman I ever loved. But in the end, sise only bind eyes for my brother.
Hathaway nodded, her expression frosty
Hathaway was still a kid back then, but she could still remember that rute
