The Billionaire Heir Fell for the Wrong Girl (Hathaway Whitmore) novel Chapter 16

Chapter 16 The Reencounter

Evelyn’s family had set her up with a rich heir for a blind date, and her parents had given her a nice chunk of money so she could buy herself some formal clothes.

Thus, Evelyn dragged Hathaway to go shopping.

Warm yellow light filled the store, and rows of delicate dresses hung neatly from racks.

The first dress Evelyn picked out looked more like something her mother would wear. “This one would suit my mom:”

Then she pulled out a younger-looking dress in a soft pink and said excitedly, “Hath, you’d look amazing in lighter colors.”

The sales associate chimed in, “Yeah, with your figure, any of our dresses would look stunning on you.”

Hathaway turned it down and said, “Hey, you’re the one going on a blind date.”

Evelyn grinned at Hathaway. “I’m about to meet the Cooper heir. Why don’t you look happy for me?”

Hathaway thought, ‘How am I supposed to be happy?’

She already knew how this would end. The blind date wouldn’t work out. Evelyn wouldn’t be interested in that young heir.

Hathaway spoke up, “I’m just…”

She was about to make up some excuse when Evelyn cut in, “Do you think this one looks good on me?”

Clearly, she didn’t really care about the answer.

Hathaway nodded and praised her. “It looks great. Go try it on and see how it fits.”

Evelyn was about to head off when Melanie Kingsley walked in. The smile on Hathaway’s face paused for a second.

“Oh, Hathaway, long time no see,” Melanie said with a smile. “Last time I saw you, you hadn’t even graduated from college. Now, you are already working.”

Her tone was warm and gentle. “Why didn’t you keep studying? You know, Jessica got her doctorate from an Ivy League school. What’s so great about working so young? If you don’t learn when you’re supposed to, you’ll have fewer chances.”

She spoke like a caring elder giving advice.

If Hathaway hadn’t had Melanie’s bitter, nasty face carved into her memory from her last life, she might really have believed Melanie was some respected woman.

Hathaway kept looking through the dresses with a blank face and didn’t bother answering her.

Evelyn found it strange and lowered her voice to ask, “Who is she?”

“Jessica’s mother.”

Evelyn sucked in a breath, thinking, ‘Well, like mother, like daughter.’

Melanie didn’t get angry at Hathaway’s attitude. Instead, she smiled.

After all, Jessica had stolen Hathaway’s fiancé. Of course Hathaway would be upset. And the angrier Hathaway was, the more it proved she still cared.

A man even the Whitmore daughter cared about had to be the best.

Melanie gave a warm smile and began picking through the dresses too, In a casual tone, she said, “These dresses are actually very picky. What suits Jessica may not suit you. Men are the same.”

Hathaway knew exactly what she was getting at. It was nothing more than Jeremiah wasn’t right for her, and Jessica was

meant to be with him.

Evelyn caught that nasty tone right away. She was about to snap, but Hathaway pulled her aside and shoved another dress into her hands. “Try this one too.”

Evelyn pushed down her anger and turned to the sales associate. “Wrap up the one I picked for my mom.”

She didn’t spare Melanie another glance.

Then she took the dresses she wanted to try on and followed the sales associate to the fitting room.

Melanie froze for a second. Dresses here started at about 500,000 dollars, and she hadn’t expected a girl that young to afford one so easily. She couldn’t help being stunned.

She only started going on shopping sprees after moving to Bayridge, because Jeremiah had invested in Kingsley Group, and she saw a bright future for her family.

Back then, Melanie and Sylvia had been classmates. Sylvia had married into wealth, while Melanie had been picky for years, only to end up older and married into an ordinary family with an ordinary company.

The Kingsley family had risen over the years, but compared with the Whitmore family, they were still nowhere close.

Such a dress was something Melanie could only buy once at the end of the year.

But then she thought about how Jeremiah had just bought her daughter a 1.5-million-dollar luxury car, and how he was helping the Kingsley family bring in business. All at once, she felt that she wasn’t far from living that kind of easy, carefree life either.

At that thought, Melanie smiled. She felt she had been very smart to invest in her daughter.

Melanie’s son was much younger than Avery. He was still in school and couldn’t stand on his own yet, so she had placed more of her hopes on her daughter.

She had told Jessica to build a good relationship with Hathaway.

At first, it had been for Avery’s sake.

Around Hathaway, Jessica acted like a warm, thoughtful friend. She was really sweet, and after spending enough time together, Hathaway had treated Jessica as her best friend.
