Before Lucas could even finish his sentence, the few people who had just walked in all caught sight of Hathaway. They all put on shocked expressions.
“What brought you here?” Lucas scoffed. “What, talked yourself back into it? Decided to crawl back, huh?”
He shot her a nasty look and added, “I knew it. I was wondering how Hathaway suddenly gave up Jeremiah after over ten years. Look, she showed up here again.”
Lucas always tended to throw shade at people. Calvin, however, didn’t say a word.
Jessica had a weird look on her face. To her, it was the same. She thought, ‘There goes Hathaway, hanging around Jeremiah again. What’s her angle? Having second thoughts? No way she ever really got over him.’
Hathaway gave them a cold stare and snapped, “Lucas, can you shut up?”
Then she turned to leave.
“Hathaway, why don’t you join us for lunch?” Jessica grabbed her arm, putting on a real friendly face. “It’s been forever since we all hung out. Let’s eat together. The guys were helping me pick out a car. We can grab a meal, my treat.”
Hathaway looked at Jessica. She had heard that Jessica was super tight with Lucas and Calvin. And yeah, now she could see it herself.
Hathaway cracked a small smile and brushed her hand off. “No thanks.”
Lucas frowned when he saw how cold Hathaway acted. “Come on, it’s lunchtime. What are you so afraid of, Hathaway?”
Truth was, Lucas kinda thought things had been pretty boring without Hathaway around.
He even turned back to check with Jeremiah. “Don’t you think so, Jeremy?”
“Yeah.” Jeremiah stood up. He was done working for now. He grabbed his jacket off the back of the chair, hung it over his arm, and stepped out from behind his desk.
But Hathaway was already gone without another word.
She took the elevator down to the first floor. By the time she got there, Jeremiah, Jessica, and the others had somehow made it down before her.
After all, Hathaway was riding the regular employee elevator. It kept stopping. They took the executive elevator. That thing went straight down with no stops at all.
It was the CEO’s private elevator, yet Hathaway had never ridden it even once.
But Jessica? That was a different story.
Jeremiah didn’t exactly try to hide how much he favored Jessica. Even the women working here gave Jessica jealous looks. Suddenly, Jessica’s ankle kind of gave out. Jeremiah reached out and steadied her, his voice real soft. “It’s okay. Just hold on to me. Can you walk?”
She replied, “Yeah, I’m okay.”
Lucas and Calvin traded a look. To be honest, they’d rarely see Jeremiah being so gentle to anyone
Up ahead, Lucas turned his head and grinned. Then he noticed Hathaway was still there.
But she was looking down at her phone, pretending she hadn’t seen any of them.
Lucas said to her, “Hathaway, come on, catch up. Let’s eat together.”
Once Lucas got outside, he looked back, but Hathaway was gone.
He scanned around for her and spotted her climbing into a silver-white sports car. Then she sped off without so much as a glance back.
Jeremiah and Jessica were so wrapped up in their own world that they didn’t even notice whether Hathaway had left or not.
It wasn’t until they sat down to dine that Lucas said a table for four was fine, since Hathaway had already gone home.
Only then did Jeremiah notice that Hathaway had already gone.
Not that he really cared, though.
At the table, Jeremiah gracefully served Jessica some food.
Calvin teased, “Who would’ve thought our CEO would ever be someone’s waiter?”
Jessica felt a warm little flutter in her chest at that. Her cheeks went pink.
Later that night, Lucas decided to pull a prank. He called up Hathaway and said, “Hathaway, Jeremiah needs your family’s Eastside project. Get it for him now.”
Hathaway listened with a frown, then hung up.
In her past life, she would’ve fallen in line without question. Even knowing his buddies were messing around, trying to get a reaction out of her, she would’ve pressured her own parents into handing it over, then delivered it to Jeremiah.
She knew it wasn’t actually Jeremiah asking. He never asked her for anything to keep from getting tangled up with her But back then, she didn’t care. She ate it up anyway.
Now that she’d lived through it all once before, Hathaway had seen the light.
She hung up and promptly blocked Lucas’s number.
