The Billionaire Heir Fell for the Wrong Girl (Hathaway Whitmore) novel Chapter 160

Chapter 160

Jessica returned home, looking completely lost.

The Kingsley family had been waiting anxiously, and as soon as they saw her, they rushed over, their eyes brimming with anticipation.

“What did Jeremiah say?” Both Melanie and Elizabeth pressed for details about what happened today.

Everyone was dying to know if Jeremiah had popped the question, or if the wedding date had finally been set.

Jessica felt a surge of bitterness and frustration rise up in her throat, threatening to overwhelm her.

Still, she kept her usual calm on the surface, masking the turmoil in her eyes, and replied evenly, “No, he’s about to leave on another business trip. He stopped by to have dinner with me.”

“Wow, Jeremiah is always so busy,” Elaine sighed, disappointment flickering in her eyes as she pouted.

Elizabeth stayed composed and said, “He’s got a million things to handle, but he still made a special effort to have dinner with you. That shows you really matter to him.”

Melanie nodded in agreement, adding, “Exactly. For someone as busy as him, always flying all over the place, to keep making you a priority for three years. That kind of dedication is rare.”

Jessica gave a faint smile and said in a flat tone, “I’m going to my room.”

Melanie was sharp enough to notice Jessica’s smile was a bit forced.

She knew Jessica was bummed that Jeremiah still hadn’t popped the question, and she didn’t dwell on it any further.

The moment the door clicked shut, Jessica’s carefully maintained composure shattered.

She leaned against the cold door for a moment, then walked to her vanity, where the tears she’d been holding back finally fell in silence.

“Why does he get to decide everything?” Jessica thought. “How can he end it all with a single sentence, as if I meant nothing? Why didn’t I get a say in it? Is he seeing someone else?”

Jessica’s eyes swirled with suspicion and uncertainty.

“Is it Scarlett?” Jessica wondered. “Or maybe Hathaway?”

Jeremiah had known them for years, especially Hathaway; they’d known each other since childhood.

If he’s really interested in them, why would he wait until now? she thought. “That only leaves one answer. It must be the new secretary, fresh out of college, the one who replaced Alice.”

Jeremiah’s secretaries always had to meet sky-high standards, at least a master’s degree.

Jessica had checked, and this new girl was an undergrad from a regular college. How could she possibly qualify to be Jeremiah’s secretary? she thought.

Rumor had it she was a favor from one of Jeremiah’s business partners.

Jessica had always found the whole thing fishy, and it had been nagging at her ever since.

But the new secretary was plain-looking, nothing special, so Jessica didn’t think much of it.

Now that she thought about it, guys like Jeremiah were used to all kinds of gorgeous, flashy women. Maybe they got bored with all that and actually found themselves drawn to someone fresh, innocent, and pure.

Everyone’s obsessed with this now, Jessica thought.

Jessica wiped away her tears, a bitter, mocking smile curling at her lips.

Figures, it’s you, she thought.

Jeremiah really was heading out on another business trip.

But before he left, he made a detour to Whitmore Group and pulled Hathaway aside for a private talk.

Hathaway was working in her office when she got a call from an unknown number, saying her car in the parking lot had been accidentally scratched.

She only planned to go down and check it out, but as soon as she reached the underground parking lot, Jeremiah caught her off guard and pulled her into his car before she could react.

Jeremiah leaned over and wrapped his arms around her. “I heard you say you don’t like Lorenzo.”

He gently patted her cheek, his voice full of approval. “You did great.”

His gaze lingered on her lips. “Let me give you a reward.”

He didn’t wait for a reply before leaning in and kissing her. Hathaway’s heart tightened, and she instinctively turned her head, trying to avoid him.

Victor was driving up front, and when he caught a glimpse of the backseat through the rearview mirror, his nerves tightened.

Seriously, what’s with Mr. Blackwood? The guy can’t keep his hands off her, always sneaking a kiss whenever he gets a chance, he thought.
