Chapter 163
Hathaway was sprawled awkwardly on the sofa, with Lucas, completely drunk, collapsed right on top of her.
Her face flickered between pale and flushed as her eyes, unfocused and shaky, landed on the dazzling chandelier overhead. The harsh glare made her head spin, and panic rushed in.
In a frenzy, she braced her hands against Lucas’s shoulders, desperately trying to shove him off with all her strength.
Drunk Lucas was like a boulder, heavy, unmoving, and suffocating. The airtight pressure wrapped her in embarrassment and left her breathless, as if she were about to be swallowed whole.
Leo and Evelyn rushed over, one on each side, barely managing to lift Lucas enough to create a tiny gap for Hathaway.
But in the next moment, Lucas lurched and slammed back down, pressing her harder than before.
The sudden, crushing weight broke Hathaway’s last bit of restraint. She couldn’t hold back.
She screamed, not caring how she looked anymore, kicking and pushing with everything she had, her eyes brimming with terrified tears.
Jessica stood off to the side, watching the chaos unfold with a cold, almost amused look in her eyes. In her mind, she scoffed, “Well, that’s the end of Hathaway’s reputation.”
She didn’t consider stepping in to help.
Just then, a set of steady, chilling footsteps echoed from the doorway, growing closer with an intimidating presence.
Everyone else was too caught up to notice; only Jessica caught the sound.
When Jeremiah’s eyes landed on the chaos unfolding on the sofa, the atmosphere around him froze instantly, as if the temperature had dropped to zero.
He strode forward, grabbed Lucas by the back of his collar with a cold, merciless strength, and hauled him up without a second thought.
Hathaway’s eyes were filled with panic and embarrassment. As soon as Lucas was yanked off her, she rushed straight into Evelyn’s arms, clinging to her.
Jeremiah paused for a split second, then hauled Lucas toward the balcony with zero mercy. Lucas, so drunk he was barely conscious, didn’t stand a chance.
Amid everyone’s shocked cries, Jeremiah flung him straight off the second floor.
Alistair, Sophia, and the rest of the elders were all downstairs, completely clueless about the chaos unfolding upstairs.
Suddenly, a loud splash and thud echoed from the downstairs pool. Everyone spun around in time to see someone drop straight into the water below.
“Lucas?” Sophia gasped, her face draining of color as she recognized her son’s clothes. She let out a piercing scream, her voice cracking with terror.
Alistair’s hand trembled as he held his wine glass.
On the second-floor balcony, Jeremiah was still surrounded by a cold, menacing vibe. He slowly pulled his gaze away, and when he glanced back at the sofa, the person who’d been a helpless mess had vanished without a trace.
“Jeremiah,” Jessica called out, suddenly doubting herself. “Did I get it wrong? Is Jeremiah really into that secretary?” she wondered.
Elaine’s eyes sparkled with excitement as she called out, “Jeremiah!”
When Evelyn finally caught up to Hathaway, she found her standing there, looking completely lost.
In the hallway, Lucas’s girlfriend stood quietly across from Hathaway, her eyes full of tears as she silently watched Hathaway break down.
She looked a lot like Hathaway in build, height, and face shape, but her skin was a bit darker, and she had this raw, down-to-earth vibe that made her seem genuinely unpretentious.
Hathaway felt like her heart had been stabbed, and suddenly it hit her, everyone was hurting, not her. She dropped her eyes, barely able to get the words out, whispering, “I’m sorry.”
Evelyn rushed up, grabbed Hathaway, and pulled her away. “Come on, why are you apologizing to her?”
As they rushed downstairs, everyone’s attention was glued to the pool.
Everyone was in a frenzy around Lucas, who’d fallen in, and nobody noticed Hathaway and Evelyn quietly making their exit.
Benson had parked the car when he spotted the two of them darting out of the Reed family mansion, caught in the chilly night breeze.
Hathaway’s face was drained of color, and seeing them rush out so suddenly, he hurried over and asked, “Hathaway, what happened? Is everything alright?”
“Don’t ask, drive!” Hathaway snapped.
Once they were in the car and had driven a little way, Hathaway finally broke down. Shaking all over, she buried her head in her knees, curling up as if trying to disappear.
“They—” Hathaway, it’s going to be alright,” Evelyn said softly, doing her best to comfort her.
