Chapter 18 The Comparison
After the reunion dinner was set on the table, Conrad came home too.
On such a holiday meant to reunite, Conrad only wanted to be with his wife and children. No matter how many times his friends invited him out, he would still come home.
He handed out Christmas gifts to everyone. Even Joe got one.
At the table, they talked about their own stories, and laughter kept rising around them.
Hathaway ate quietly, afraid that this warm, lively family might turn out to be nothing but a beautiful illusion,
Before she knew it, they had finished dinner.
After that, Hathaway went back to her bedroom to sleep.
Not long after, Avery came in too. “You still haven’t told me where you’ve been these past days.”
Hathaway hadn’t expected him to keep pressing. She went quiet for a moment and then answered with a different question, “Avery, if I find proof of what those people did, and Dad still goes soft on them, will you fire them?”
This time, Avery was firm. “Fire them? That’s not enough. If they really committed financial crimes, I’ll send them to prison.”
Hathaway let out a breath of relief.
She had truly been afraid that her father would go soft, and that her brother would follow his lead. After all, several of them were relatives, and many had connections.
In her last life, as Jeremiah’s wife, she had known very well that Jeremiah only cared about ability when hiring people. Not a single employee at Blackwood Group had gotten in through connections.
Avery insisted, “Can you answer my question now?”
Hathaway took her phone out of her bag, unlocked it, and handed it to Avery. “Look through the photo album yourself.” Avery took the phone. On the screen were photos she had taken of several large transfer records. The more he looked, the colder his heart felt.
He said, “Don’t tell Mom and Dad yet. I’ll find a way to get them out of the way, then fire those people once the holiday ends.”
After a long silence, Avery handed the phone back to her.
She said, “The finance director is a relative introduced by someone from Mom’s side. Avery, we can only send Mom and Dad abroad and deal with this first. They might be angry at first, but they’ll understand later.”
Avery lowered his eyes, his voice calm. “I’ll make them pay.”
During holidays, a lot of relatives would come to visit the Whitmores.
Conrad had been waiting in the study for a phone call.
When Jeremiah finally called to send his greetings, Conrad picked up at once.
As Hathaway passed the study, she heard Conrad’s happy voice from inside. After a few polite greetings, he said, ” Jeremiah, you and Avery have been friends for so many years, and with Hathaway too… Why don’t you think over the plan I mentioned? Working with Whitmore Group is a good choice.”
Hathaway frowned. She felt embarrassed about what her father said. Jeremiah was only making a half-hearted call to keep his parents happy, yet her father had seized the chance to push for a partnership with him.
She didn’t need to hear Jeremiah’s voice or see his face to know how much he must be looking down on her father.
The moment Conrad hung up, Hathaway went straight into the study and made her displeasure clear. “Dad, stop having anything to do with Jeremiah. He’ll only hurt our family.”
Conrad had another worry and explained, “Kingsley’s business overlaps with most of our supply chain. If Kingsley Group really rises, it’ll be hard for us to survive.”
Hathaway couldn’t agree with him. Whether her father begged or not, Jeremiah would still support the Kingsley family and Preston.
After all, Preston was Jessica’s father. Jeremiah could do anything to make Jessica happy.
Thinking of the tragedy her family had suffered in her last life, Hathaway tried to persuade him. “Trust me, Dad. If we work with Jeremiah, Whitmore Group will die even faster. Jeremiah is already helping Preston because of Jessica.”
Conrad pretended to be angry. “Whose fault is that? I gave you so many years, and you still couldn’t win him over.
“I’m not dead set on working with him. Whether we work together in the future or not, at least we’ve shown our attitude! He can’t slap a smiling face, can he?
