The Blackwood family still had a marriage contract with the Whitmore family. Hathaway knew Jeremiah’s arrival was probably because Edmund or Reginald told him to. There was no way he’d come over out of his own free will.
And as it turned out, she was spot on.
After Jeremiah left the Whitmore residence and got back to the Blackwood Villa, Eleanor had already caught wind of something, though she wasn’t clear on the details.
As soon as Jeremiah walked in, she asked, “So what’s all that fuss going on at the Whitmore family?”
“They fired a few people,” Jeremiah replied.
Eleanor frowned. “That’s it?”
Jeremiah nodded. He didn’t say anything else and headed upstairs.
Eleanor gritted her teeth and muttered to the butler, “I wonder if he’s as tight–lipped around that woman, barely saying a word.”
The butler smiled, “That’s how Jeremiah is.”
As he handed her a cup of coffee, Eleanor took a sip and suddenly found herself curious about Jessica. After all, she was the first woman Jeremiah had ever shown any interest in for years.
Eleanor had tried to get some info out of Lucas, but all she got was that Jessica was really outstanding.

Jeremiah went back to his room, grabbed some clothes, and took a shower. It was pitch black outside, and it was already 11 PM. He read for a bit by his bedside before lying down.
But that night, no matter what he did, he couldn’t get any sleep. His mind was filled with shadows, but at the same time, it felt completely blank.
In his dream, everything was swallowed by an impenetrable darkness. There wasn’t a single ray of light to be found.
He sat right in the middle of the pitch–black room, not moving a muscle. It was like he was in a trance.
When the alarm went off at six the next morning, Jeremiah opened his eyes, bored out of his mind, with nothing else on his mind. He shook off the dream pretty quickly.
He went for his usual run, took a shower, and headed off to work.
Not long after, Jessica left her place, too. She was wearing a beige coat and grabbed two cups of coffee from a street vendor. By the time she got to Blackwood Group, it was only 7:30 AM.

Chapter 27
Jeremiah got to the office and dove straight into his work. Lucas showed up not long after.

He knocked on Jeremiah’s office door and barged in, shouting, “Did you hear? Whitmore Group got totally shaken up on the very first day back.”
Jessica was thoughtfully setting a cup of coffee by Jeremiah’s hand, but she paused when she heard Lucas.
Calvin came in with Lucas and said, “Whitmore Group did a huge round of layoffs. All the people let go were caught embezzling. The siblings pulled this off behind Conrad’s back and fired nearly twenty veteran employees.”
Jeremiah was already in the loop. He’d heard about it before they showed up.
Lucas caught the look on his face and grinned, “Man, Hathaway got some nerve. She’s only been at Whitmore Group for a few days and has already thrown the whole place into chaos.
“Is she there to work or to stir up trouble? She barely started, and the company’s already turned upside down. I bet Conrad’s losing his mind right now. He’s always been helpless when it comes to his daughter.”
Jessica smiled. She’d seen this coming from a mile away. Hathaway was never exactly a straight–A student, so there was no way she’d suddenly become some kind of office genius.
But Jessica couldn’t help but envy how much Conrad doted on Hathaway. She’d been to their house a few times, and it was obvious that Conrad spoiled her rotten. That was probably why Hathaway grew up pampered, unable to handle the slightest bit of hardship.
If Conrad, the one who loved her most, was losing his patience, then it showed Hathaway really was total deadweight at work.
Jessica thought all this, but didn’t say a word. After all, Hathaway used to be her friend, and talking behind her back felt petty. So she kept quiet.
She glanced at Jeremiah, but he didn’t react at all. He looked like he couldn’t care less about the whole thing.
Jessica couldn’t help but feel a little smug inside.
Calvin said, “I heard they dug up some dirty accounts, having to root out the cancer in the company before it spreads. Avery, the guy who’s always so indecisive, actually showed some backbone this time.”
Lucas said, “This was definitely Avery’s move. Hathaway? She doesn’t know the first thing about any of this. At best, she’s hyping her brother up from the sidelines.”
Lucas was sure Hathaway couldn’t have helped at all. Jessica felt the same way.
“Jeremiah, what do you think?” Lucas asked.
Jeremiah rubbed his temples. He hadn’t answered yet, but everyone could see he didn’t look so good.
“Jeremiah, what’s up? You look pretty bad,” Lucas said.
Jessica glanced at Jeremiah, too, and sure enough, his face looked really gloomy. Her heart couldn’t help but

sink as she thought, ‘Is he worried about Hathaway?‘
“What’s wrong?” Jessica asked softly, keeping her tone gentle though her heart was racing.
“Didn’t sleep well last night. Kept having weird dreams.” Jeremiah felt sluggish after getting up.

Jessica quietly breathed a sigh of relief. ‘As long as it’s not about Hathaway, that’s good enough for me,‘ she thought.
“What kind of dream?” Calvin suddenly asked.
Jeremiah rubbed his temples, feeling pretty fed up. “I remember sitting in a room with walls all around me. Can’t remember anything else.”
Just then, the secretary came in to top off their drinks, and Calvin gripped his cup a little tighter.
For some reason, Jeremiah suddenly pictured Hathaway clinging to Conrad, crying her eyes out at his feet.
“I’ve actually studied dream interpretation. Maybe I can help you,” Jessica said, stepping behind Jeremiah and tracing gentle circles on his temples with her fingers.
Jeremiah gave a faint smile and pulled her hands down. “I know you’re full of surprises.”
“I can’t watch this anymore. You two are showing off,” Lucas said, rolling his eyes.
Calvin smiled, glanced over, and then looked away.

Meanwhile, at the Whitmore residence, Conrad and Sylvia had been busy all day.
By evening, Conrad was still out, and Sylvia returned home looking exhausted.
“Mom, where’s Dad?” Hathaway asked. “Did Uncle and his lot give you a hard time?”
Sylvia shook her head.
Hathaway knew exactly what was going on.
Her grandparents had been gone for years, and she only had one uncle, who’d been divorced twice and married three times.
That uncle had packed Whitmore Group with his people, and Sylvia went along with it, unable to turn them down out of politeness. Most of the dead weight at Whitmore Group was from his side of the family, sitting around doing nothing.
Now, the Whitmore family was reaping what they’d sown.
“I’m the one who let them run wild. Hathaway, you should get some rest,” Sylvia said.
Hathaway squeezed Sylvia’s hand. “You should get some rest, too, Mom.” Then she quietly went back to her
