When another holiday rolled around, Alistair Reed hosted a lavish party, inviting nearly half of Bayridge’s high society.

The Reed residence was lively and festive, decked out with colored ribbons everywhere. Edmund didn’t make it since he was off visiting an old war buddy, and Reginald and his wife couldn’t attend either because they were with him.

Jeremiah, being Lucas’s good friend, of course joined the festivities at the Reed residence.

The Reed residence was lit up like a palace. Jeremiah, Lucas, Calvin, Alistair, and the Reed family, along with the Harper couple and the Whitmore couple, all sat together at the main table.

Hathaway and Evelyn, along with a group of welldressed girls, took their seats at another big round table.

Those girls were probably younger relatives of the Reed family. They might have been sitting down, but their attention was clearly elsewhere, sneaking glances at Jeremiah and Calvin and gossiping in hushed tones.

Look, that’s Jeremiah. He’s so handsome. I’m literally getting chills.

He’s not the only eye candy at that table, you know.

Evelyn rolled her eyes inwardly.

Jeremiah and the others are at the adultstable, and we’re stuck at the kidstable,Evelyn whispered to Hathaway.

Hathaway nodded in agreement. There might not have been any actual little kids at their table, but honestly, the seating arrangement made it pretty clear.

Alistair told Leo to keep an eye on the two girls, so he got sent over to their table, too.

So, is this where they put all the rejects?Evelyn added as she saw Leo coming over.

Leo caught that and couldn’t keep a straight face.

Honestly, Evelyn and Hathaway didn’t have it too bad. Even though Hathaway had already graduated, to the older folks, she was still a kid in their eyes, diploma or not.

But Leo was the one who really had it rough.

Leo awkwardly pulled out the chair next to Hathaway and sat down. He was twentyseven, but since he hadn’t accomplished much yet, Alistair had stuck him at the kidstable with the girls.

Looks like there weren’t any seats left over there, so you’re stuck with me,Leo said.

Sure enough, the main table was packed. There really wasn’t a single seat left.

Hathaway glanced over and saw Alistair, his face glowing with happiness as he poured wine for Jeremiah. He

was being extra attentive to the younger guests, especially Jeremiah. It was clear how much he liked him.

Honestly, Mr. Reed only has grandsons. If he had a granddaughter, he’d probably be trying to marry her off to Jeremiah,” Evelyn joked.

Guess I’ll have to switch teams then,Leo shot back.

As soon as he said that, one of the girls across the table, some distant relative, burst out giggling.

Their table was getting a bit too loud, so Jeremiah and Lucas both looked over.

Hathaway caught Jeremiah’s eye for a second, then quickly looked away. She didn’t want anyone getting the wrong idea. But Lucas misunderstood.

Hathaway’s sneaking glances at you again. She’s always been like that,” Lucas leaned in and whispered to Jeremiah.

Jeremiah pretended not to hear him and started chatting with Alistair on his right.

Lucas glanced over again and saw Hathaway chatting with Leo, a faint smile playing on her lips.

Leo was the same age as Lucas, but when it came to achievements, he lagged far behind. Alistair was proud of Lucas’s business smarts, but as for Leo, not so much.

Leo, do you want to make some money?Hathaway asked.

Who’d turn down money?Leo sighed and took a sip of his drink.

So, want to make some cash with me?Hathaway said.

Leo gave her a doubtful look. You?

Hathaway nodded.

Never mind,” Leo said.

Hathaway had already figured he wouldn’t take her seriously, but she wasn’t bothered. She said, It’s fine if you don’t want to, but seriously, stay away from the used car business.”

Leo somehow got it into his head that flipping used cars was a quick way to get rich, and Hathaway ended staying up all night faking news articles for him.

If it weren’t for her makeup today, her dark circles would’ve totally given her away.

As she spoke, she pulled her phone out of her coat pocket, opened her photo album, and showed him the fake news clipping she’d prepped last night. Even the newspaper says there’s going to be hail next month. I wasn’t lying, was I?

Leo took her phone and checked it out. It did say so.

The article said some areas in the town were expecting hail next month. If he left his cars outside without

He tried to sneak another look, but Hathaway smiled and tucked her phone back into her pocket.

Luckily, Leo hadn’t actually jumped into the used car business yet. He was in the negotiation phase. If he wanted to back out, he could do it anytime.

Just then, the hot dishes started arriving, and everyone began to eat. Leo quickly forgot about his grandpa playing favorites.

After a few more drinks, he pulled out his phone to show Hathaway and Evelyn pictures of his new girlfriend, proudly saying how clever he was for not telling her he was the Reed heir.

If she sticks with me when I’m broke, that’s a good woman,Leo thought to himself.

Leo,Hathaway said, giving his shoulder a gentle pat, so

That girl thought Leo was broke, and in the end, she went after his dad instead, Hathaway thought to herself. But she kept that to herself.

Hathaway tugged at her long hair, a pained look on her face. Can I say something like that out loud?she wondered. Sometimes, knowing too much is more trouble than it’s worth.

Lucas was sipping his drink when he caught Hathaway’s move. He cleared his throat and teased, Check it out. Hathaway’s literally pulling her hair to stop herself from running over to Jeremiah.

At that, Calvin glanced over at Hathaway.

Hathaway frowned, absentmindedly tugging at her long, silky hair, looking genuinely troubled.

Even though she acted all aloof these days, sometimes her childish side still slipped through. Calvin couldn’t help but smile.

Jeremiah shot Hathaway a look, frowning a little, like something suddenly clicked for him.

Then his phone rang. He politely excused himself to Alistair, stood up, and stepped outside to take the call.

As Jeremiah stepped out, Alistair couldn’t help but marvel at how Jeremiah had snagged another big project

in Southtown.

The younger generation is always pushing the older one forward. These kids are really something,he thought, wishing Jeremiah was his grandson.

The Harper couple truly envied him.

Alistair’s voice was so loud and full of energy that everyone at Hathaway’s table could hear every word.

One of the girls, wearing a duffle coat, looked at Jeremiah with stars in her eyes and said, Do you think I could ask Jeremiah for a business marriage?

The girl next to her rolled her eyes. Please, he’s loaded. Why would he need a business marriage? It’s not like
