Preston knew that Jeremiah had chosen to work with the Whitmore family.

He regretted that the Kingsley Group wasn’t big enough yet. If it were, with Jessica and Jeremiah’s relationship, the Blackwood Group would have definitely chosen the Kingsley family instead.
During a meeting between the Blackwood, Whitmore, and Reed families, Victor took a call, then leaned in to whisper to Jeremiah, “Mr. Blackwood, Mr. Kingsley said the project is a go.”
Jeremiah gave a slight nod.
Victor immediately understood and got to work.
Avery, with his sharp ears, overheard the exchange and realized that Jeremiah had been helping the Kingsley family expand their reach for more than half a year. His grip on his cup tightened.
Hathaway didn’t catch the whole conversation, but she did hear the words “Mr. Kingsley.”
She guessed they were talking about Jessica’s dad, Preston.
This was all within Hathaway’s expectations, so she didn’t pay it any mind.
‘So what if Preston is trying to take over the Whitmore family’s business?‘ she thought. She’d make sure the Whitmore family found another way.
Lucas, representing the Reed family, was at the meeting, too. The Reed family was handling materials for this government project. Lucas gave Hathaway a sympathetic look, as if he was waiting to see how she’d respond.
Hathaway glanced sideways at Lucas as she turned a page in her file. She didn’t look at Jeremiah or Lucas, staying totally cool.
Lucas hesitated for a second, then dropped it and went back to his own paperwork.
After the meeting, Hathaway was the first to leave, heading out ahead of everyone else.
Avery and the others were going to have dinner with Jeremiah, but Hathaway had no intention of joining them.
As she pressed the elevator button, Jessica and Elaine showed up in the hallway at the same time.
Elaine had come to the Blackwood Group to see Jessica. Spotting Hathaway, she shot her a look and sneered, “Like a bad penny, you always turn up.”
Hathaway didn’t spare her a glance. As soon as the elevator doors opened, she stepped inside. She pressed the button for the first floor.
She’d come with Avery, so she’d have to grab a cab home now.
As she was about to reach the door, she spotted a guy holding a bouquet of yellow roses. He was impossible to miss. Hathaway paused for a moment. She recognized him. He used to chase after Jessica. But then his family went bankrupt. The family of the guy who went after Jessica went bankrupt in less than three months.
Once, Hathaway saw him at a car wash. The former spoiled rich kid was washing cars, getting yelled at by his boss for working too slowly.
Jeremiah took at least three years to bring down the Whitmore family, but it took him less than three months to ruin this rich kid’s family. He folded so easily.
“Oh, that’s sad,” Hathaway sighed softly. She glanced back and saw that Jeremiah, Lucas, and Jessica hadn’t come out yet.
She strode over to the guy.
Maybe because she knew what it was like to be down on your luck, Hathaway decided to give him a hand. She smiled lightly and said, “These flowers are for Jessica, right?”
“Yeah, that’s right,” Ethan Green with the flowers replied.
“Did you know Jessica’s boyfriend is Jeremiah?” Hathaway asked.
“Huh?” Ethan froze, looking shocked. “Ms. Kingsley has a boyfriend? Wait, you mean Mr. Blackwood?”
Clearly, he had no idea Jeremiah was Jessica’s boyfriend. No wonder he had the guts to show up.
When his family went bankrupt later, it really came out of nowhere for him.
“Mrs. Kingsley never mentioned Jessica had a boyfriend. She encouraged me to chase after her,” he said.

Hathaway let out a sarcastic laugh. ‘The Kingsley family would stop at nothing to boost Jessica’s worth; she thought
Ethan was being played for a fool.
Hathaway didn’t say anything else. She glanced at the bouquet in his hand. “These roses are gorgeous. How about you give them to me instead? Pretend you came here for me today.”
Ethan was left speechless. “Who are you?”
“Hathaway Whitmore, Conrad’s daughter,” she replied.
Ethan’s eyes went wide. He knew all about the legendary Conrad. And she was the heiress of Whitmore Group.
Her brother was Avery, and he got way more money than the guy. He might have the guts to chase after Jessica with Melanie cheering him on, but he would never dare go after Hathaway.
“Ms. Whitmore, are you kidding me?” the guy stammered.
“I’m doing this for your own good.” Hathaway lowered her voice as she noticed some employees looking over. Her fingers brushed lightly against Ethan’s collar, making it look like he was here for her.
*Jeremiah’s about to come out. If he finds out you’re after his girlfriend, do you know what’ll happen to you?” she warned If you don’t agree, you’ll end up like a dead fish on the table.”
Hathaway wasn’t exaggerating. Jeremiah could finish him off in seconds. She’d probably spot him at the car wash in the future.
By then, Ethan’s net worth wouldn’t be enough to buy a single tire of the Lamborghini he used to drive.
“Mind giving me a ride? I need to head back to the office,” Hathaway said.
Ethan shivered, his Adam’s apple bobbing as he forced out a word. “Okay.”
Hathaway smiled, taking the bouquet with a light laugh. “You make the right choice.”
As she finished speaking, the elevator doors slid open.
Jeremiah, Jessica, Lucas, and Elaine stepped out and caught the scene.
Elaine spotted Ethan and deliberately raised her voice, “Jessica, isn’t that Mr. Green who used to chase after you? How did Hathaway manage to snag him? She can’t help herself.”
Then she called out louder, “So, Ethan, who are those flowers for, my sister or Hathaway?”
Ethan glanced at Jeremiah and Jessica holding hands, and finally got the picture. He couldn’t figure out what Melanie was thinking, pushing him to confess to Jessica right here at the Blackwood Group.
He lowered his head, looking dejected. “I brought them for Ms. Whitmore. I heard she was here, so I rushed over.”
Hathaway was right. Jessica already had a boyfriend. The way they stood so close said it all.
Her boyfriend was Jeremiah, the most famous businessman in Bayridge. If Jeremiah ever found out he was making moves on his girl, he’d be toast.
Hathaway smiled. ‘Maybe this guy isn’t a total lost cause after all,‘ she thought.
She leaned in and said softly, “Ethan, since I didn’t drive today, how about giving me a lift?”
Then the two of them strolled out together like they owned the place.
Elaine bit her lip. She and Melanie had cooked up this whole scheme to boost Jessica’s reputation, but it totally backfired
on them.
