Chapter 39 Dreaming

The darkness was so thick that it felt like Jeremiah was wrapped in ink–soaked cotton, smothering every breath. Not a single ray of light reached his fingertips.
The only thing on the wall was a calligraphy scroll, its edges speckled with tiny spots of mold, as if it had been hiding centuries of grime.
He couldn’t make out the whole piece, but near the bottom right of the center, the character for “mother” was faintly visible.
Jeremiah only knew he was sitting in the middle of the room, utterly fixated on that character in his dream, until his eyes snapped open.
He woke up with a start, his pajamas drenched in cold sweat.
It was almost seven. After washing up, he came downstairs to find Eleanor reading the newspaper, while the butler and servants were busy preparing breakfast.
“Did you sleep in today?” Eleanor asked, her voice full of concern as she looked up at him.
Jeremiah nodded and turned to the butler. “Zane, how long has it been since my mom had a check–up? Make sure she gets a full physical.”
Zane looked momentarily startled, then quickly replied, “Yes, sir.”
Eleanor shot him a glare, set the newspaper aside, and said impatiently, “Why do I need a check–up? I’m perfectly fine. It’s a waste of my time.”
Jeremiah told Zane, “Don’t leave her side during the whole check–up, and let me know right away when the results come in.
With that, he sat down, grabbed a quick breakfast, and headed out for work.
After Eleanor finished eating and was about to get up, the butler quickly bowed and said, “Mrs. Blackwood, Jeremiah is worried about your health. The car’s ready. Please come this way.”
Eleanor sighed inwardly, ‘Guess I can’t get out of this today.’
She reluctantly gathered her things and got into the car the butler had prepared.
When they got to the private hospital, the specialists were already waiting for her. She got the full VIP treatment. She didn’t have to wait a second. Once the results were in, everything checked out fine.
As Zane was about to call Jeremiah to report, Eleanor snatched the phone from him. “Let me talk to him.”
“See? Nothing’s wrong,” Eleanor said, waving the report. “You’re making a fuss for nothing. Wasting my time again. Honestly, I bet I’m healthier than you.”
“Good. That’s all I needed to know,” Jeremiah said, and hung up.
Jeremiah was in the middle of a meeting, and everyone around the table sat ramrod straight, not daring to make a sound.
Jessica, his girlfriend and secretary, curved her lips into a sly smile.

Meanwhile, when Conrad walked into the house, he saw Avery with his arm slung around Hathaway’s shoulders, talking to her.
Hathaway was doubled over with laughter, barely able to catch her breath.
“You two are so close. It almost makes me jealous,” Conrad said with a big grin, watching his kids.
It had been ages since he’d heard them bicker with each other. They never really fought, but their playful banter was always competitive. Somewhere along the way, Hathaway stopped trying to outdo her brother.
Instead, Hathaway was always offering advice and helping her brother come up with plans. “Dad.” Hathaway stood up and took his briefcase. “You’re back. Let’s get started with dinner.” “Alright,” Conrad replied, clearly in a good mood today. He had some good news to share.
At the dinner table, he couldn’t hide his excitement. “This time, the engineer Hathaway brought in really made a difference. Killian’s work on the large–scale spatial structure and wireless energy transmission helped Whitmore Group make a lot of money.
“The government noticed how well we did and approved the eastern project for us. The secretary praised us for our work.” Hathaway had seen this coming.
Avery had caught wind of it, too, and for a while, he wondered if his sister was paying Killian a bit too much. But now, it was

clear Killian was the real deal.

Seeing how happy her parents were, Hathaway chimed in with a few cheerful words about how Whitmore Group was going to keep getting better, which put a bigger smile on their faces.
Steam curled up from the hot soup as Conrad looked at his kids and spoke slowly, “I’ve got two big things to announce today. First, I’m planning to hand over the reins to Avery.
“I’ve worked hard for years, and now that the company’s stable, it’s time for Avery to take over. I can finally enjoy the good life.”
Hathaway was taken aback. In her previous life, Conrad only handed over the company after Avery got married. This was way earlier than before.
Conrad turned to Hathaway, his tone gentler. “Second, I’m setting aside some shares for you. It’s enough to keep you comfortable and let you do whatever you want.”
“Dad, don’t worry about me,” Hathaway cut in, leaving no room for discussion.
She already had an investment company abroad that was turning a profit. She’d never planned on taking any shares from the family business anyway.
Conrad looked at his daughter, who was so adamant, and shook his head. “We’ll talk about this when you’ve thought it through. For now, let’s eat.”
As Avery ate, he brought up Killian again. “So HR told me you didn’t give Killian an interview, straight up handed him a huge salary, and hired him on the spot?”
Hathaway was in the middle of a sip of soup when she heard that and nearly choked.
‘Now how am I supposed to explain why I’m so sure about Killian’s abilities?‘ she thought.
Avery and Conrad both turned to look at her.
Hathaway wiped her mouth and spoke slowly, “Back in college, I watched Killian represent his university in a robotics competition. He was the driving force behind the team that won first place. I always knew he was good.”
She was only half–honest.
Killian really was a big deal at his top–tier university, and when she worked with Jeremiah, she got to know his team pretty well.
Hearing her explanation, Avery’s suspicions disappeared.
After dinner, Avery headed out.
Conrad headed to his study to take care of some business. Before going upstairs, he told Mary, “Oh, and Mary, no need to make dinner for us tomorrow. We’ve got a dinner party to attend.”
Mary nodded in response.
Hathaway stepped into her bedroom, shut the door behind her, and started a video conference with her business partners across the ocean.
Her room was well soundproofed, and the large bed separated the bedroom door from the dressing room. Even if someone tried to listen in from outside, they wouldn’t catch a word of her video call in the dressing room.
By the time she finished, it was already midnight.
She was about to wash up and bed head when, as she closed her laptop, something Jeremiah had said flashed through her mind.
Inspiration struck. She opened a folder and, without missing a beat, started drafting another project proposal framework for Whitmore Group.
The next day, at the dinner party Conrad and his wife Sylvia attended, they bumped into Jeremiah and Jessica.
This was the first time Jessica had seen Sylvia since she started dating Jeremiah. She froze for a split second, then flashed a smile. “Hi, Sylvia.”
Sylvia had always had mixed feelings about Jessica.
Jessica used to be close with Hathaway and would often come over to their house. Sylvia thought she was pretty, well- mannered, and secretly thought she’d be a good match for Avery.
