Chapter 40 Missing Her Bracelet
The next day, there was a problem at the company in Monarcia that required the owner to show up in person. Hathaway had no choice but to drop everything and fly out immediately.
After wrapping up her work, she took the opportunity to catch up with an old friend from her university town. By the time she returned to Bayridge, two weeks had already gone by.
It was drizzling when she landed in Bayridge, and the sky was gloomy.
But as soon as she stepped off the plane, Hathaway ran into the last people she wanted to see. It was Jeremiah and Jessica.
Jeremiah stood tall and straight in his trench coat, while Jessica wore a cream–colored knit dress. In the bustling airport plenty of people couldn’t help but glance their way.
They looked like they’d gotten back from a trip.
In her previous life, Jeremiah never accompanied her to a party, let alone took her on a trip.
Hathaway quickened her pace as she left the terminal. Benson was already waiting for her outside.
She handed her suitcase to Benson and slipped into the back seat, wanting to put as much distance between herself and that scene as possible.
As soon as Benson got behind the wheel, Hathaway told him to get going right away.
Zane, the Blackwood family’s butler, had come to pick up Jeremiah and happened to catch sight of this scene.
Just then, Jeremiah walked out of the terminal. Zane immediately recognized Jessica at his side.
Her makeup was minimal, and she looked elegant and understated, completely different from the bold, glamorous Hathaway he remembered.
“Hi, Mr. Blackwood, Ms. Kingsley.” Zane rushed over, popped the trunk, and was about to grab Jessica’s suitcase. “Let me, please,” Jessica said gently. “After living abroad for so long, I’ve gotten used to doing things on my own.” Jessica was always courteous to everyone and never expected others to wait on her.
Zane watched her, really liking the idea of her as the future Mrs. Blackwood. He thought she was a much better fit for Jeremiah.
But Zane wouldn’t dream of letting her do it herself. “Ms. Kingsley, you’re a young lady. Let me take care of it for you.” With that, he quickly and neatly stowed her suitcase in the trunk, then hurried to open the back door. “Please, Ms. Kingsley.”
Jessica said softly, “Thank you.”
Jeremiah shot Zane a glance, an unreadable smile tugging at his lips, then slid into the car as well.
After driving them back to the office, Zane was in the villa garden reporting to Eleanor about his work, and he brought up what had happened.
Eleanor raised an eyebrow. “Oh? So you think Jessica is a better match for Jeremiah?”
“I swear Jeremiah didn’t bribe me or anything,” Zane joked. “I’m telling it like it is.”
“I know, Eleanor said, smoothing her hair. “Well, it is what it is. I hope Hathaway doesn’t end up regretting it.”
Hathaway had been spoiled since she was a kid, so she was a bit of a princess. But she wasn’t a bad person. She would never let someone with a bad heart marry Jeremiah.
Jessica, on the other hand, hadn’t grown up with much, but she’d worked hard and made something of herself. She was humble, kind to the staff, and had a big heart.
Back when Eleanor first had someone dig up info on Jessica, Jeremiah figured it out almost immediately. Instead of getting upset, he chuckled and said, “Let Mom see for herself how great my future wife really is.”
When that got back to Eleanor, she honestly didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
Now, Eleanor shook her head with a smile. “Alright, I’ve made up my mind. Whatever he wants, let him do it. I’m not getting involved in their business anymore.”
Eleanor told Zane, “Tell the kitchen to whip up Successfully unlocked! working hard on their business trip, and now they’re heading straight to the office. Send son.
.em.”
“Yes, Mrs. Blackwood, Zane replied, instantly realizing that Eleanor was finally softening up toward Jessica.

Chapter 40 Missing Her Bracelet
‘Looks like it’s a matter of time before the Blackwood family accepts Ms. Kingsley as one of their own, he thought.
Hathaway didn’t go straight home. She asked Benson to drop her off at the mall instead. She was meeting up with Evelyn. Evelyn had been especially bored lately.
With Mother’s Day coming up and still not having picked out a gift because she’d been so busy, Hathaway decided to go shopping with Evelyn.
They grabbed a bite to eat on the third floor, then headed down to the first floor, where Hathaway walked into a jewelry shop and picked out two ruby bracelets.
“Why are you buying two?” Evelyn asked.
“One for my mom, one for Celeste,” Hathaway replied.
Evelyn raised an eyebrow. “Why bother with these? It’s probably a sales trap.”
‘I’ve dodged all the traps men throw at me. Like I’d be scared of some marketing trick, Hathaway thought to herself.
“No worries. Ruby is only going to get more expensive,” Hathaway said.
Hathaway knew she wasn’t buying for sentimental reasons and couldn’t help but laugh at herself.
She paid for the bracelets on her phone, then went on a rampage through the shops, stocking up so much she wouldn’t need to come back for at least two months.
By the end, they were so exhausted from shopping that they crashed at a coffee shop to catch their breath.
Evelyn took a sip of her coffee, glanced at the shopping bags, and said casually, “Why didn’t you get a bracelet for yourself? Oh, wait, I forgot. You’re not into bracelets. You prefer chain bracelets.”
Hathaway paused, something suddenly crossing her mind.
“You haven’t worn your chain bracelet in forever, have you?” Evelyn said, grabbing Hathaway’s wrist for a look. Sure enough, her wrist was completely bare.
Hathaway pulled her hand back. “I’m not really into all that flashy stuff anymore.”
Right after she said that, a mom at the next table gave her a strange look. Hathaway realized she’d said something weird and offered an apologetic smile.
Just then, her phone rang. She glanced at the screen and froze for a second.
It rang a few more times before she finally picked up.
“Edmund?” Hathaway said softly.
Edmund’s voice came through loud and clear. “Hathaway, what have you been up to lately? How long has it been since you last visited your grandpa? I’ve been missing you.”
Hathaway was suddenly at a loss for words.
Evelyn immediately realized it was Edmund on the line. Hathaway’s grandfather had passed away long ago.
Edmund was inviting her over to the Blackwood Villa. He said he had a gift for her. Hathaway humored him with a laugh and brushed him off.
After she hung up, Evelyn asked, “Seriously, Edmund still doesn’t know his grandson’s got a new girlfriend? He doesn’t know Jessica exists?”
