Chapter 66

The next day was a weekend.

While the family had hired people to clean the house from top to bottom, Hathaway headed out to the bookstore to read.

She was completely engrossed in her book when, out of nowhere, someone bumped her elbow.

“Sorry,” came a cool female voice, but there wasn’t a hint of apology in her tone.

Jessica had come to the bookstore to pick up a few books. When she spotted Hathaway tucked away in a corner on the third floor, absorbed in a thick professional book, she made her way over.

“You’re actually reading right now? Am I seeing this for real, Hathaway? No one’s around, and you’re still putting on a show? Seriously. Hathaway, stick to shopping for designer stuff and hanging out at the mall. That’s way more your style,” Elaine said.

Hathaway shot back coolly, “Save your concern for yourself.”

“After all those years of being a simp, you suddenly quit, and now you’re reading books? Give me a break,” Elaine sneered. “Jessica, she’s a copycat, trying to be like you.”

Hathaway hadn’t expected to run into Jessica here. She shifted to the side, deliberately ignoring her.

But Jessica wasn’t about to let it drop. “So, when are you planning to return the ring? If you had any sense, you’d know it’s kind of pathetic to keep clinging to the Blackwood family’s ring, don’t you think?”

Hathaway chuckled and thought, ‘So this is what Jeremiah was talking about yesterday. She doesn’t care?’

Hathaway closed her book. “I’m heading to the Blackwood Mansion right now. Want to come with me?”

Jessica retorted coldly, “Are you bragging that you get to see Edmund and I don’t?”

“I thought you were so impatient, you’d want to get your hands on it the second I gave it back. If you’re that eager, let’s go together then,” Hathaway replied.

Jessica gritted her teeth and stormed off. She got nowhere with Hathaway and left right away.

Elaine had only taken a few steps after Jessica when she suddenly turned back and ran over to Hathaway. “Jessica and her fiancé are heading off to a private island for a little getaway, only the two of them.

“Who knows? Maybe when they come back, Jessica will be expecting.”

Hathaway had planned to ignore whatever Elaine said, but when she brought up Jessica getting pregnant, her expression froze for a split second.

Elaine caught the flicker of emotion on Hathaway’s face.

Thinking she’d finally hit a nerve, Elaine got more excited. “Did that hurt? Too late to be sad or regret it now.”

Elaine, convinced she’d won, skipped off happily.

Jessica walked toward the section with foreign originals.

She’d been reading foreign books since she was little, always got good grades, and standing there, she looked like she was part of that world.

Hathaway watched Jessica’s silhouette; her chest tightened with a sudden ache. She realized how naive she used to be.

Back then, when Hathaway was still a college student, Jessica had asked her to take some pictures of Jeremiah’s bookshelf and send them over.

Hathaway hadn’t thought much of it. She assumed Jessica wanted to be as ambitious as Jeremiah, to pick up his calm and see the world the way he did.

Maybe that was when things started to change, if nobody noticed. But Hathaway never really understood it, and she never thought too deeply about it. She saw Jessica as someone who seemed so kind and driven.

Maybe Jessica really does love Jeremiah more than I do. Hathaway thought. On that front, Hathaway had to admit defeat.

Hathaway didn’t continue reading. She closed her book and headed to the checkout.

As she finished paying and turned to leave, someone stepped in front of her. “Sorry, I’m here to apologize for Elaine. She shouldn’t have said those things,” Felix said.

Hathaway didn’t spare him a glance, her expression unreadable as she walked away without looking back.

She’d only met Felix twice, so they weren’t close at all.

The only thing she remembered about him was from her previous life, when Eleanor had praised him at the dinner table, saying, “Felix might be young, but he’s already outstanding.”

Back then, Hathaway had lost her brother and drifted downstairs like a lost soul. When Eleanor saw her, her praise for Felix abruptly stopped.

When Hathaway got home, the place looked spotless, like it had been washed clean. Sylvia was handing out pay to the cleaning staff, while Conrad was reading the newspaper.

Hathaway slid in close to her dad and sat down. “Why put it off? Let’s go return the ring now.”

Conrad glanced at her. “Are you sure?”

Hathaway nodded.

“Alright, let’s go,” Conrad said as he got up and told the staff to fetch the ring,

Before they left, Hathaway got a call from Killian.

There was something urgent at work, so she received an email, printed out the attachment, and planned to read it in the car.

Conrad was driving today, and since the light in the front seat was too bright, Hathaway sat in the back to go through the 7 documents.

The ride was smooth, and after a little over an hour, they arrived at the Blackwood Mansion.

The villa exuded a quiet, timeless charm. Tree shadows swayed gently, and everywhere one looked, one could sense the owner’s refined taste and artistry.

Hathaway opened the velvet box for a final check, then handed the ring to her father. “Dad, please explain things to Edmund properly

Alright.” Conrad replied, carefully putting the ring away before stepping out of the car.

The butler was already waiting by the car, bowing slightly as he guided Conrad toward the house.

The car fell silent.

Twenty minutes later, Hathaway was finishing up the last few pages of her documents when she heard Vivian’s/voice outside. “That’s Conrad’s car.”

She looked out the window and saw Vivian and Jeremiah walking over. Both of them were dressed down, and it looked like, they’d come from playing golf.

She hadn’t expected to run into them at the old house. But they didn’t notice she was there.

Hathaway quickly slid down in the leather seat, trying to stay out of sight.

“Conrad won’t let it go, huh? You took Jessica to the wedding yesterday, and now he’s off to tattle to Edmund. Conrad’s so stubborn, still hung up on that promise from years ago,” Vivian said.

Jeremiah, say where you stand today and leave the rest to me. How do you really feel about Jessica? I’ll go make things clear to your grandpa,” Vivian added.

After a moment. Jeremiah replied coolly, “I want to marry her.”

Vivian suddenly let out a laugh. “Well, would you look at that, Jeremiah? Never thought I’d see the day.

“Trust me. I know exactly how awful it is to be stuck with someone you don’t love. Now that you’ve finally said it, I’ll help you

out.”

With that. Vivian turned and headed into the villa to find Edmund.

As their footsteps faded away, Hathaway frowned.

‘If Dad doesn’t come out soon, they might bump into them,’ she thought. ‘And what if things get tense between them?’

Hathaway was about to get out of the car, but she paused, not wanting to run into Jeremiah at all. In the end, she stayed in the car.

She sat up straight, reopened her documents, and kept herself busy with them while waiting for Conrad.

Luckily, it wasn’t long before Conrad came out. When Conrad came out, he really did bump into Vivian.

Seeing her stormy expression, he could tell she had nothing good to say. Conrad didn’t want to stoop to arguing with her, so he ignored her completely and walked right past.

He simply gave Jeremiah, the younger man, a nod and left.

His attitude threw Vivian for a loop. She instinctively wanted to call out to Conrad, but Jeremiah held her back.

As Hathaway set her documents aside, she saw Conrad come out. She watched his face. He didn’t look upset.

She couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief and thought, ‘Guess the ring’s been returned already. That’s settled, then
