The dinner party was held at the Whitmore residence. They invited some old friends and distinguished elders who preferred a low-key event rather than a noisy crowd.

Edmund came himself, accompanied by Lorenzo.

Jeremiah didn’t show up at the dinner. He sent someone to fetch Edmund and his brother once the dinner was finished.

It was late before the guests finally left.

The servants were busy cleaning up the villa. Conrad had had too much to drink and had already gone to bed.

Sylvia had the servants do a quick cleanup and then sent everyone home, planning to have a thorough cleaning done

tomorrow.

Avery and Celeste headed off to their newlywed suite. Hathaway, worn out from the long day, went back to her room, wiped off her makeup, and took a shower.

As she was about to drift off to sleep, her uncle called, inviting her over for a card game. Some of the friends he’d brought along for the wedding were still put up at the Blackwood Hotel.

Hathaway held her phone, ready to say no, but then remembered her uncle never left her behind.

In her previous life, after the Whitmore family went bankrupt, her uncle tried to take her away, but she stubbornly refused, and that was her last shot at survival, and she blew it.

Thinking about it, she went to her closet, threw on a loose hoodie, put on a mask, and, with her hair half-dry from the shower, headed out.

Benson was already in bed, and Hathaway didn’t want to wake her parents by driving, so she grabbed a cab to the hotel.

As she stepped into the elevator, she overheard a cleaner and a waitress chatting. “Who knows who reported Scarlett? Mr. Blackwood stepped in to protect her.”

Another one said, “The manager’s always had it out for Scarlett, jealous of her looks and always trying to make things hard for her.

“When a customer complained about her, the manager jumped at the chance, wishing he could fire her on the spot. Who would’ve thought her backer was Mr. Blackwood?”

The waitress giggled, covering her mouth. “Wow, wow. Let’s see how the manager acts all high and mighty now.”

Hathaway’s gaze was cool and indifferent as she stepped out onto the floor and headed straight ahead.

As she entered her uncle’s card room, smoke mingled with a faint aroma of tea drifted out.

Her uncle, Sebastian Westbrook, looked up when she walked in and waved her over. “Hey, you made it. Come sit over here.”

One of the older men nearby smiled at her, “Hathaway, you’re getting more and more beautiful. Your whole vibe is different

now.”

“Your uncle never stops bragging about you in front of us, saying you’re both capable and thoughtful.”

Sebastian waved his hand with a laugh. “Don’t listen to their nonsense. Come on, join us for a few rounds.”

Hathaway exchanged a few pleasantries with a smile and joined in for a few rounds, but her mind kept wandering, and she couldn’t really get into the game.

Sebastian’s friends were all in their forties, both men and women, and honestly, she couldn’t really relate to them.

After losing several hands in a row, Hathaway put down her cards and stopped playing. She ordered a fruit platter for everyone and quietly watched them mess around.

“Hey, Hathaway.” Sebastian’s girlfriend leaned in, thinking Hathaway was too cute and sweet.

She pinched Hathaway’s cheek and said, “Your skin is so fresh and youthful. When I was your age, my skin wasn’t half as nice as yours.”

Hathaway let out a dry laugh and gently pulled away from her hand. “If you’re bored, how about checking out the hot springs? They’re really nice here.”

The woman beamed. “Sure, let’s go together.”

“I’m about to head home.”

“Why not stay here tonight?”

“I’d rather not,” Hathaway said, shaking her head. She didn’t want to stay at the Blackwood Hotel. Scarlett might drop by anytime.

Before long, Sebastian’s girlfriend started pestering him to go to the hot springs, and the whole group decided to head over there.

“You guys go ahead. I’ll call her a cab,” Sebastian said, cigarette dangling from his lips as he nodded toward Hathaway.

He had to make sure she got in the car safe and sound. If anything happened to Hathaway in the middle of the night, Conrad would have his head.

Sebastian’s friends all said their goodbyes and headed out.

Hathaway waved goodbye with a smile, and as she was about to head out, she put her mask back on. Walking down the hallway, she asked, “Uncle Sebastian, when are you going to get married?”

“That’s a long way off,” Sebastian said.

Sebastian had been doing business overseas, but he always seemed to lose more than he made, and every so often, he had to rely on Sylvia and Conrad for a bailout.

Sebastian slung an arm around Hathaway’s shoulders as they stepped into the elevator, and since they rarely saw each other, he started teasing her about old times. “Remember when you went on that big layoff spree? Man, you really chewed me out.

“I remember you told me not to help those relatives, saying if this were ancient times, I’d be the guy helping your brother snatch the crown. I can’t stab your brother in the back.”

Hathaway chuckled softly.

When they reached the first floor and stepped out of the elevator, Sebastian said, “Hathaway you’ve really grown up. Your dad says you’re actually making things happen at the company.

“But I remember someone once said, when you grow up too quickly, there’s always a price to pay.”

Hathaway froze for a moment, not because of anything Sebastian said, but because she spotted Scarlett coming in through the revolving door..

Sebastian was still talking.

Hathaway reached up to touch her mask, then slowly lowered her hand.

Sebastian half-hugged her as they walked out, and Scarlett, seeing guests, instinctively paused and dipped her head slightly.

Hathaway walked out through the revolving door; she didn’t look back.

The cab they’d called still hadn’t arrived. Her uncle was about to light up when he spotted Jeremiah’s black SUV.

With a cigarette hanging from his lips, he waved through the window and grumbled, “Hey, man.”

He wasn’t sure if Jeremiah heard him or not.

Jeremiah rolled down the window and looked at Hathaway standing out in the night air.

She was wearing a loose hoodie and cream-colored pants, her hair still a bit messy from her shower. Compared to her elegant evening dress earlier, she looked way more laid-back now.

Sebastian grinned and nudged Hathaway toward Jeremiah’s car. “Hey, in time. Mind giving Hathaway a lift? It’s so late. I’d worry if she went home alone.”

Hathaway stepped back a bit, frowning and muttering, “No, really.”

Jeremiah reached over and opened the passenger door. “Get in.”

Hathaway mumbled, “Uncle Sebastian, I really don’t need a ride.”

Sebastian shoved her into the seat, pulled the seatbelt across her, and started rambling, “Honestly, I’d rather have him drive you home than let you take a cab this late.

“Didn’t you say he’s got zero interest in you? That’s perfect. If he did, then I’d really have something to worry about.”

Hathaway never expected Sebastian to have absolutely no filter. She sat there awkwardly fidgeting, not knowing what to do with herself.

The next second, the car door was slammed shut.

Inside the car, Hathaway caught a faint trace of a woman’s perfume, the same one she’d noticed on Scarlett when she walked by her in the hallway.

Hathaway hadn’t expected Jeremiah to personally drive Scarlett back. ‘Makes sense,’ she thought.

In her previous life, Jessica really had it out for Scarlett.

The car pulled away smoothly, but the vibe inside was pretty stuffy. Hathaway, feeling awkward, cracked the window a bit to get some air.

Neither of them spoke. Hathaway, to fill the silence, said, “Since we’re heading to my place, why don’t you take the Blackwood family ring back with you?”

Jeremiah kept his eyes on the road and replied in a calm voice, “I gave it to you, so it’s yours now. Jessica and I don’t really care about things like that.”

‘Is he serious? He really thinks Jessica doesn’t care?’ Hathaway wondered. ‘How much does he know about Jessica?’

But honestly, it had nothing to do with her anymore. Hathaway let her gaze drift out the window, watching the city lights blur past.

She wasn’t stupid enough to talk trash about his girlfriend behind his back. Things got quiet again between them. Hathaway yawned under her mask. She was so sleepy, and since she didn’t feel like talking, she acted like she was asleep. But in the end, she actually fell asleep for real.
