Chapter 68
A couple of days later, Eleanor heard that a lot of matchmakers had been visiting the Whitmore family. She immediately went to find Hathaway.
Hathaway was at work when Eleanor called and asked her to meet at a café.
Eleanor held Hathaway’s hand and said, “Hathaway, you are with Lorenzo, while Jeremiah is with Jessica. This is actually a good thing. It feels like I have two daughters now.
“That’s the upside of having two sons, I guess. You have no idea how much I used to envy your mom for having a son and a daughter. Now I have double that.”
Eleanor was genuinely relieved and grateful that Hathaway hadn’t stirred up any drama about Jeremiah and Jessica, and had handled everything so sensibly.
Now that things were the way they are, she hoped Hathaway would continue to be so understanding.
Edmund only let things slide because Lorenzo and Hathaway were dating. There was no way they could back out now and suddenly start matchmaking with other families. If they did, Edmund wo Probably blow up again.
“Mr. Blackwood said you’ve really changed. You have grown up, and you actually understand things now,” Eleanor went on.
Hathaway shrugged, keeping her cool. She knew Reginald was the first to accept Jessica.
Jessica was the head of Monarcia’s charity foundation, and her reputation for doing good had spread far and wide.
In Eleanor’s social circles, everyone gushed about how Jessica was not gorgeous but genuinely kind-hearted, and that she totally lived up to her impressive education.
With all that praise, whatever doubts Eleanor was no way to complain about.
a about Jessica quietly melted away. With a daughter-in-law like this, there
“I heard you and Jessica used to be close friends. Jessica is so kind and gentle. I’m sure you two will get along fine,” Eleanor said.
Hathaway smiled lightly and didn’t respond. She smoothly withdrew her hand, pretending it was all perfectly normal, picked up her coffee cup, and took a small sip.
‘This was hands down the funniest thing she’d ever heard, Hathaway thought to herself.
Eleanor probably knew that Hathaway and Lorenzo were putting on an act, pretending to be together for appearances. But right now, for Jeremiah’s sake, she wanted to keep up the illusion and make it look real.
“Eleanor, I get what you’re saying.” Hathaway set down her coffee cup. “Avery’s off on his honeymoon, and I’ve got a lot on my plate at work.”
“Alright, Hathaway, go ahead and get back to work,” Eleanor said, satisfied that she’d gotten her point across.
Hathaway stood up with a smile, but the moment she turned away, her expression instantly turned cold and distant.

The next day, Hathaway went with Conrad to the hospital for a check-up. Conrad had a full physical, and they did an EKG to check his heart. Everything came back normal.
At noon, Avery called fron overseas. He had a meeting to attend, but since he wasn’t around, he asked Hathaway to go in his place.

Normally, Avery was the one who handled these government meetings. Ever since Conrad retired, he had spent most of his time at the factory, seeming to prefer being with the workers.
Hathaway answered the call and said she understood. After hanging up, she almost texted Avery: [Is Calvin going to be there?]
But in the end, she stared at the words for a moment, then quietly erased them.
Even if he’d once lent her 15 million dollars, at the end of the day, Calvin was Jeremiah’s childhood buddy. She had no business caring about him.
The Whitmore family was where all her loyalty belonged. That was the only thing she should be protecting.

The meeting was scheduled for two o’clock. At one-thirty, Hathaway freshened headed out the door. She made her way to the conference building.
up her makeup, calculated the timing, and
As she entered the hall, Hathaway noticed the Whitmore Group’s nameplate placed right next to the Blackwood Group’s, meaning she’d be sitting beside Jeremiah.
Keeping her cool, she casually walked over and, with lightning-fast hands, swapped her family’s nameplate with the Reed Group’s, making sure no one noticed.
‘No way am I sitting next to Jeremiah, Hathaway thought to herself.
She was pretty sure she’d pulled it off smoothly, but as Jeremiah walked in through the door, he caught her little maneuver in full view.
Jeremiah raised an eyebrow, didn’t say a word, and took his seat.
Some people who knew Jeremiah greeted him, and he nodded back, barely acknowledging them.
Hathaway noticed Jeremiah had arrived, but she kept her head down, pretending not to see him.
They were separated by an empty seat, and neither of them said a word.
Soon, Lucas sat down between them. He greeted Jeremiah cheerfully, then turned to Hathaway and said, “Why would the Whitmore family send someone who doesn’t know anything to this meeting?”
“What’s it to you?” Hathaway snapped, her tone icy.
Lucas was so pissed, he couldn’t remember when Hathaway started acting like he was invisible. She used to butter him up to get closer to Jeremiah. Now, she didn’t bother to fake it.
Even when Lucas showed up at her door, she wouldn’t see him.
Lucas thought about it and figured it was probably because he hadn’t backed her up when she was competing with Jessica for Jeremiah. Now Hathaway was taking it out on him.
Thinking along those lines, Lucas lowered his voice and muttered, “So you’re throwing in the towel because you can’t have him, huh? The more you act like this, the more Jeremiah’s going to get sick of you.”
“Whatever,” Hathaway shot back, her tone icy.
Lucas was left speechless, fuming inside.
On the other side, Jeremiah kept his eyes on the documents in front of him. Even if he heard them, he didn’t bat an eye.

The meeting was run by government officials. The Blackwood Group’s numbers were, as always, way ahead of everyone else,” and Jeremiah had a stellar reputation, refined and poised.
A few of the female government staff couldn’t help sneaking admiring glances his way. Whenever the Whitmore Group came up. Hathaway would finally look up and give a polite, practiced smile.
After the meeting ended, Hathaway followed the crowd as they filed out.
The weather was perfect. As Hathaway was coming down the stairs, she was suddenly shoved hard from behind. It was
Lucas.
The force of the push sent her stumbling forward. Her high heel
slipped as she tumbled down several steps, unable to regain her balance. By the third step, a stabbing pain shot through her ankle.
To make matters worse, she saw Jeremiah turn around, alerted by the commotion. And she was about to crash right into his arms, no way to stop herself.
Everything happened so fast that Hathaway’s face went white as a sheet.
The last thing she wanted was to end up in Jeremiah’s arms with everyone watching. She gripped her palm tight, twisted her body, and spun on her toes, barely managing to avoid crashing into him.
