Chapter 70
“It’s all good now,” Hathaway said, spinning around to show him she was fine.

Seeing she was really okay, Conrad finally relaxed. He turned to Lucas and said, “Mr. Reed, you’re the big boss now.
“Your grandpa always goes around bragging about how calm and reliable you are. But young people who act recklessly and don’t think things through will regret it later.”
Lucas nodded along, listening quietly.
Seeing how sincere he was, Conrad didn’t say anything else.
Hathaway walked Lucas to the door. As she was about to close it, she said, “Lucas, don’t come here again.”
Every time she saw him, those dark memories of being pushed to the edge would surge up uncontrollably, no matter how hard she tried to bury them.
Lucas didn’t get a chance to reply before the door swung shut in his face.

The next day, when Hathaway got home from work, she found her parents there, and there were two chefs in the kitchen, busy cooking up a storm.
She figured her brother and his wife had come back, and her dad had hired some new chefs to make a family dinner, so she didn’t think much of it.
Conrad told her to go upstairs and change.
Hathaway came downstai
in a cartoon-print dress that looked more like a nightgown than anything else.
Conrad glanced at her and didn’t say a word. In his eyes, his daughter looked good in anything, though honestly, it was a bit out of place for today’s occasion.
Not long after, Avery and Celeste showed up.
Hathaway was laughing and chatting with Celeste, dragging her over to their favorite spot at the table, ready to dig in.
“Hold on,” Conrad said. “The guests haven’t arrived yet.”
“Guests?” Hathaway was a little confused.
“Reginald and his family are coming over tonight,” Conrad explained.
Hathaway blinked, totally caught off guard. “Wait, what?”
Conrad explained, “On your brother’s wedding day, I found out later that the Blackwood Group’s hotel actually turned away paying customers and took a loss to make room for us.
“We really owe them big time, so this dinner is our way of thanking them for making space for us. It’s the least we can do.”
Hathaway stayed quiet after hearing that.
As they finished talking, Reginald and Eleanor showed up.
Conrad quickly got up, his face full of warmth as he reached out to greet them. “Reginald, Eleanor, thanks for coming. Please make yourselves comfortable.”
Sylvia welcomed them with a friendly smile, “We’ve been looking forward to having you over. Please, sit down.”

Reginald responded with a polite smile, “We’ve been meaning to visit for a long time.”

After some friendly small talk, Eleanor turned to Celeste with a warm smile. “So this is the bride, right? She looks so elegant?
Conrad nodded with a smile and invited everyone to sit, and everyone finally settled in around the table.
Hathaway let out a quiet sigh of relief when she saw there was no one else behind them.
Jeremiah wasn’t going to show up.
After all, he was staying away lately.
But as Hathaway was starting to relax, a handsome and commanding figure strode in through the doorway.
Hathaway froze in place.
She started to close the door, but hesitated and drew her hand back.
Conrad was also taken aback for a moment when he saw Jeremiah walk in, but quickly greeted him with a warm smile and invited him to take a seat.
Avery was on the phone, but when he noticed Jeremiah, he gave him a quick wave in greeting.
Noticing that Celeste seemed a bit tense around the Blackwood family, Hathaway pulled out a chair and sat right next to her. She squeezed Celeste’s hand on her lap and leaned in to whisper, “Don’t
, Celeste.”
Celeste nodded.
When Avery finished his call and took the seat on Celeste’s other side, she let out a breath and visibly relaxed.
At the dinner table, the parents from both families got along well. Conrad and Sylvia were warm and welcoming, while Reginald and Eleanor were all smiles.
Avery and Jeremiah made small talk, keeping things light..
Dinner was going smoothly, and the vibe at the table was relaxed.
Hathaway was picking up a piece of beef when she glanced up and saw Joe sneaking in through the front door. Seeing the place packed with guests, he tiptoed his way inside, trying not to draw any attention.
With only one look, Hathaway’s stomach dropped. Something was seriously off.
Joe was wearing a high-end suit, but it hung off him like he’d swiped it from an adult, baggy, loose, and it looked totally out of place on him,
Sylvia was sitting to her left. With Conrad and Jeremiah chatting away, their voices easily drowned out anything she might
say.
Hathaway quickly lowered her voice and whispered to Sylvia, “Didn’t I tell you to get Joe a suit that actually fits him? Look at him now, with all these guests here! Don’t tell me he looked like this at the banquet, too.”
If that were the case, the Whitmore family would be totally humiliated.
Sylvia glanced at Joe and whispered so only Hathaway could hear, “No, I bought him a suit in his size.
“He wore it once at the banquet and then hid it away, didn’t want to mess it up. The suit he’s wearing now probably isn’t his.” Hathaway was taken aback.

‘Is he wearing a hand-me-down from Avery?’ she wondered.
