The next day, Hathaway went to meet a business partner.

Most of their factory’s products were custom orders, made to the client’s specs, so there was no way to sell them to anyone else.

Sometimes, Hathaway really felt like someone was pulling the strings, slowly driving the Whitmore Group to the brink.

The one behind it all was either Jeremiah or Jessica.

Hathaway said, a cold smile tugging at her lips as she stood up, “Since that’s how it is, let’s end this partnership for good.

“Maybe we’ll have a chance to work together again someday.”

“Wait.” The business partner was caught completely off guard. He hadn’t expected Hathaway to call it quits without trying to defend her position.

‘Does she really treat her big clients this recklessly?’ he wondered.

It wasn’t until Hathaway and her assistant disappeared from view that he finally realized the Whitmore Group’s people had truly walked away, ending the partnership for good.

Derek Vance made a call. “Mr. Kingsley, the Whitmore family suddenly pulled out of the deal.

“It was Conrad’s daughter who came. She didn’t notice anything, clueless about business. She was out the door almost as soon as she sat down. Honestly, she’s nothing compared to your daughter.”

Whatever Preston said on the other end, Derek laughed, “Alright, we’ll leave it at that.”

Meanwhile, Preston hung up and said, “Conrad actually let his daughter handle the negotiations? The Whitmore Group is pretty much doomed. We don’t need to get involved.”

With that, he shook his head.

When Hathaway got back to the office, Avery asked about the client. “Hathaway, how did things go with Mr. Vance?”

“We’re not working with him anymore,” Hathaway replied.

Avery paused for a moment, then sat up straighter in his big office chair. “We’re not working with him anymore?”

Hathaway took a seat across from him. “I get a bad vibe from Mr. Vance. He doesn’t seem like a good person.”

Avery was stunned. “Are you seriously making decisions based on your gut feeling now?”

Hathaway replied, “My gut feeling is always spot on.”

Avery paused, then said, “Are you testing my obedience or something?”

Hathaway grinned at him. “So, did you obey?”

“I did,” Avery replied.

Hathaway smiled.

Avery grinned, “How about we all go out for lunch with Celeste today?”

“Not today. I already have plans with someone,” Hathaway replied. She’d already arranged to meet Calvin. Since he helped her out last time and took her to the hospital, it was only fair for her to treat him to a meal.

Before calling Calvin to invite him, she braced herself for a rejection.

To her surprise, he said yes.

At 10:30, Hathaway went home to slip into a dress and put on some subtle makeup. The restaurant she’d chosen for lunch was pretty upscale. She kept telling herself the effort wasn’t for Calvin.

Half an hour later, Calvin showed up right on time, but Hathaway was running a bit late. As she walked up to the restaurant, he stepped outside to meet her.

“You made it,” Calvin said.

“Yeah, traffic was a nightmare,” Hathaway replied.

The two of them shared a smile and headed inside together.

Just then, a guy totally absorbed in his phone accidentally bumped into Hathaway. She tried to keep her balance, but ended up brushing against Calvin.

“Sorry,” Hathaway said quickly, taking a step back to give him some space.

“No worries,” Calvin said.

Neither of them realized Jessica was standing a short distance behind.

Jessica was there for lunch too. She noticed the whole thing from afar and frowned slightly.

‘So, since Hathaway couldn’t win over Jeremiah, is she now aiming for Calvin? Jessica thought. ‘Well, I guess that makes

sense.

Calvin was loaded, good-looking, and had a reputation for being a total gentleman.

Honestly, it was no surprise Hathaway would be interested in him.

‘But didn’t she always claim she liked Lorenzo?’ Jessica wondered.

‘Guess she was saying that for show,’ Jessica thought.

Lorenzo wasn’t a real member of the Blackwood family. He was studying medicine, which wouldn’t make him rich. Even if Jeremiah treated him well, he wasn’t really family.

Other than Jeremiah, Calvin was definitely the best pick.

Jessica’s face fell.

‘One idiot like Lorenzo is more than enough. I really don’t want Calvin to get played by her, too, she thought.

“Calvin,” Jessica called out, walking over with a warm, familiar smile. “What brings you here?”

Calvin turned to look at her, his tone calm. “Jessica, you’re here too?”

Jessica, who was there with her family, offered, “Would you like to join us for lunch?”

It was obvious she was trying to pull Calvin away, leaving Hathaway on her own.

“No, that’s alright,” Calvin replied, noticing Jessica’s cousin coming in as well. “I wouldn’t want to intrude on your/family

lunch.”

“Alright then,” Jessica said, forcing an awkward smile. She didn’t spare Hathaway another glance and headed back to Elaine and Melanie. The three of them chatted for a bit, and both Elaine and Melanie shot a look in their direction.

Calvin and Hathaway made their way to the private room.

Melanie knew Calvin. The last time Jeremiah came over to the Kingsley residence, Calvin was there, too. Even from a distance, he really stood out.

“Why are they together?” Melanie asked. “Does Calvin like her”

Elaine stomped her foot, annoyed. “Mr. Harper knows what she’s like. He’d never fall for her.”

“Let’s go in first, we’ll talk later,” Jessica said, keeping her cool.

The Kingsley family headed into their private room and started ordering.

Jessica finally spoke up. “There’s no way those two would ever get together.”

She went on, “Calvin would never go for Hathaway. Take away the Whitmore family, and she’s got nothing. Plus, she can’t stick to one guy, first Jeremiah, then Lorenzo. Calvin’s way too steady for someone like that.”

Elaine nodded in agreement. “I’m going to the restroom.”
