Chapter 76
On Friday evening, Hathaway picked up Lorenzo from college and took him out for dinner.
By the time they finished eating, on the drive back, it was already dark.
The evening breeze slipped in through the half-open window, carrying the coolness of the night.
Hathaway gripped the steering wheel and glanced over at Lorenzo beside her.
It had been a while since they’d last met, and he seemed to have grown a bit taller.
“Lorenzo, your birthday’s coming up. What do you want?” Hathaway asked.
Lorenzo gazed out at the streetlights passing by, his voice soft. “A cake is enough.”
Hathaway couldn’t help but smile. “That’s all?”
“Yeah,” he replied, turning back to look at her, his eyes serious. “That’s all.”
“Alright,” Hathaway said with a smile. “I happen to know how to make a chiffon cake. I’ll bake one for you myself.”
“Thanks,” Lorenzo said.

Lorenzo was in a good mood because of the upcoming long holiday. Sitting in the passenger seat, he watched Hathaway drive and said, “Hathaway, I heard recently that Whitmore Group has developed some amazing technology.”
Hathaway hummed in response, clearly in a good mood.
Jeremiah said, “Honestly, Hathaway, you’ve always been incredible. Back when you were in college, a lot of underclassmen had a crush on you.
“Even now, I still hear guys mentioning your name. It’s a pity you didn’t finish your degree.”
Hathaway gave a small smile.
As she drove, his praise barely registered in her heart; she remained completely unfazed.
College felt like it belonged to a previous life. She’d never paid any mind to those underclassmen who confessed to her, so she never felt any sense of loss.
The car was quiet for a moment, then Lorenzo suddenly blurted out, “Actually, I like you, too.”
Hathaway was a little taken aback by his words.
She could always tell when a guy liked her, but she chalked it up to Lorenzo being courteous, like a younger brother humoring her.
As she turned the steering wheel, Hathaway asked, “If one day I became ruthless for Whitmore Group, would anyone still love me then?”
Lorenzo looked at her, puzzled. “Why would you say that? Whitmore Group is doing great right now. Why would you ever need to go that far?”
Hathaway stared into the deepening night ahead. “Lorenzo, sometimes, things are out of your hands.”
Just then, they arrived at the Blackwood Villa. The car pulled up smoothly in front of the house. Hathaway turned to Lorenzo and said, “Go on home, Lorenzo. Get some rest.

Lorenzo opened the car door and said softly, “See you, Hathaway.”
“See you,” Hathaway replied.
Hathaway’s car slowly pulled away.
Lorenzo watched as her car disappeared into the night before turning and heading into the yard.
As soon as Jeremiah stepped into the living room, he spotted a tall figure sitting on the sofa.
“You’re here today?” Lorenzo called out.
Jeremiah glanced up at Lorenzo and gave a faint smile. “Just got back?”
“Yeah. I had dinner with Hathaway,” Lorenzo replied.
Jeremiah responded with a flat tone, “Yeah.”

Lorenzo knew Jeremiah didn’t want to talk about Hathaway, so he headed for the stairs. As he was about to go up, Jeremiah called out. “Lorenzo, your birthday’s coming up, right? What do you want?”
Lorenzo hadn’t expected Jeremiah to ask the same thing Hathaway did. ‘Are we really on the same wavelength?’ he wondered.
Lorenzo’s smile faded a bit. “Why do
you surprise me, Jeremiah? If I say it out loud, it won’t be a surprise anymore.”
Jeremiah smiled, “Alright, I’ll take care of it.”

The next day was the start of the long holiday, but the lights were still on in the R&D department.
Hathaway walked in and saw both Killian and Ian there, along with a few others she didn’t know by name. She asked, “Aren’t you guys going home?”
“Ms. Whitmore, going home isn’t really our thing,” one of them joked.
Hathaway laughed and clapped her hands. “Then let’s all grab dinner together tonight.”
“Sure,” they replied.
They were all pretty close now, so grabbing dinner together felt like a casual work meal. Hathaway suggested, “How about we go for seafood stew tonight? I know a place that’s been super popular lately.”
The main thing was, Jeremiah never liked messy dishes or anything with bold flavors. Seafood stew wasn’t his style. So there was no risk of running into him there.
“Sounds good to me,” Killian and the others said. “Let’s go for seafood stew.”
Once everything was settled and they finished up work, everyone packed up and headed downstairs. They took a few cars and followed Hathaway’s directions to the seafood stew place.
They grabbed a window seat on the second floor, ordered seafood stew and a six-person set meal, then each added their favorite dishes.
Hathaway spooned a plate of spicy seafood stew and took a slow bite, quietly listening to Killian and Ian’s chatter. Before she realized it, their talk had turned to romantic relationships.
Someone asked, “Ms. Whitmore, is it true you were once engaged to someone?”

Hathaway gave a wry smile. “Yeah, I was engaged once, but he never really cared, and I wasn’t about to push it, so it faded away.”
Killian poured Hathaway a glass of juice and asked curiously, “So, are you seeing anyone now?”
Before Hathaway could answer, one of the R&D guys jumped in, “Ms. Whitmore and Lorenzo, the Blackwood family’s second son, are a thing. He’s still studying medicine.”
Hathaway nodded with a smile. “Yeah, I didn’t expect you guys to know about that.”
“I also heard you were originally with Jeremiah,” someone else said.
As soon as those words were out, the whole table went dead silent.
Hathaway coughed, the spice catching her off guard.
Killian glanced over at her.
Hathaway said, “It’s not what everyone thinks between Lorenzo and me. I loved the wrong person before, but thankfully, that’s all behind me now.”
Killian noticed her embarrassment and quickly changed the subject to work. The others got the hint and dropped the topic.
After dinner, Hathaway went to pay, but the waiter told her Killian had already covered the bill. She chased after him.

“Hey, you paid last time, so it’s only fair I pick up the tab now,” Killian said with a grin. “Besides, you know my salary’s pretty decent.”
Hathaway smiled.
‘Funny how in my previous life, Killian was like Jeremiah, always admiring Jessica, never me. If I hadn’t gotten involved this time, he probably wouldn’t bother being nice to me,’ she thought.
“Just so you know, don’t think about switching jobs right under my nose,” Hathaway teased.
Killian, Ian, and the others all laughed. With the perks at Whitmore Group, there was no way they’d ever want to leave.
After saying goodbye to everyone, Hathaway drove home alone. As soon as she got there, her phone buzzed in her bag; it was a call from Avery.
Out of the blue, Avery asked her to cover a business trip for him.
“Sorry, but I’ve caught a cold and have a bit of a fever. Can you go in my place this time? I don’t trust anyone else with it,” Avery said.
As he spoke, Hathaway heard a soft cough from his end.
“How did you catch a cold out of nowhere? Is it bad?” Hathaway asked.
Avery paused for a moment, then said, “Well, you told me I’d have twins, so things got a little wild with Celeste last night”
He quickly changed the subject, sounding embarrassed. “Okay, okay, let’s drop it. Thanks for helping me out, Celeste”
Avery hung up in a hurry.
Hathaway’s cheeks flushed a little as she headed to her bedroom to pack. She grabbed two sets of clothes, her laptop, and her charger.
