After three days on a business trip in Riverand, the client tried to tempt her with a visit to a brand-new old town, but Hathaway politely turned him down.

On the third night, she landed on the last flight. The airport lobby’s digital clock blinked exactly 10 PM. Not wasting a second, she grabbed a cab and rushed straight to Evelyn’s place.

When she got to lan’s place, Evelyn pulled out the baking tools Hathaway had sent over with a delivery guy earlier that afternoon.

“Why are you so hung up on this?” Evelyn shook her head, seeing how wiped out Hathaway looked. “Just grab a cake from any bakery.

“You got back from a business trip, and you’re still making a cake? Why put yourself through this when you’re so tired?”

Hathaway casually tied her long hair back with a rubber band, tucked a stray lock behind her ear, and showed her pretty face. “Lorenzo only asked me for a cake. If I can’t do that for him, wouldn’t that make me a pretty lousy friend?

“Plus, he really did me a huge favor.”

Evelyn rolled her eyes and started preheating the oven.

Hathaway had baked the cake layer, and by the time it had cooled and she popped it out of the pan, it was already past eleven.

She whipped up the cream and carefully piped the decorations. Nothing fancy, a clean message: [Wishing the future great doctor all the best in helping humanity.]

“That’s so cheesy,” Evelyn teased. “Don’t tell me you two catching feelings for each other?”

“No way, there’s no spark between us,” Hathaway replied.

Twenty minutes later, Hathaway let out a sigh of relief. “Done.”

She glanced at Evelyn, who was practically falling asleep. “Hey, can I borrow your car?”

Evelyn handed her the keys. “I’ll have the housekeeper clean up the mess tomorrow. Go on to cheer up your little boyfriend.”

“Thanks,” Hathaway said, grabbing the keys and heading straight for the Blackwood Villa.

The midnight breeze was chilly as Hathaway kept glancing at the clock and watching the road.

When she reached the security booth at the Blackwood family’s villa complex, she made a call.

While waiting for him to answer, she checked the time again; it was almost 11:50 PM.

Honestly, at this hour, she had no idea if Lorenzo was already asleep.

‘If Lorenzo were already out for the night, then… she wondered.

Before she could figure out what to do with the cake, Lorenzo’s voice came through the phone, sounding a bit sleepy. “Hathaway?”

Hathaway instantly perked up. “Lorenzo, can you come outside for a minute? I’m almost at your place.”

Lorenzo sounded surprised. “Weren’t you on a business trip? Why are you back so soon?”

“Yeah. I wrapped things up early and came back. Come downstairs, will you?” Hathaway said.

She hung up, letting out a sigh of relief.

When she pulled up to the Blackwood Villa in Evelyn’s sports car, it was exactly 11:55 PM.

Lorenzo opened the gate and stepped out, momentarily at a loss for words.

The yellow streetlight washed over Hathaway, who looked like she’d been through a lot, but her eyes were shining bright. The moment she saw him, her face lit up with a smile.

“Happy birthday. Lorenzo,” she said.

Lorenzo noticed her hair was a little tousled, and there was some cream smeared on her sleeve.

She really did bake the cake herself.

“Hathaway, did you seriously come back early so you could bake me a

ke?” Lorenzo asked.

“Not really, honestly, I’d much rather crash at home than stay out,” Hathaway said with a grin, handing him the cake. “Glad made it in time, before midnight.”

Lorenzo was at a loss for words.

Looking at Hathaway, exhausted but still trying stay gentle, Lorenzo thought for the first time, ‘Man, Jeremiah really is an idiot.

‘That know-it-all, overachiever Jeremiah is totally clueless when it comes to love!

A late-night breeze swept by, and Hathaway was about to leave after handing over the cake.

“Wait.” Lorenzo reached out and tugged at her sleeve. “Do you have any y candles?”

Hathaway paused for a second. “Yeah, I do.”

Lorenzo opened the box to find a small 8-inch cake, with a message written in cream right in the middle. He smiled at the words. “Looks like it’s time to blow out the candle and make a wish.”

Hathaway nodded softly and took out a tiny candle. Lorenzo asked her to hold the cake, then pulled out a lighter and lit it with a click.

The faint, warm glow shone atop the cake in the late-night air. As the breeze blew, the candlelight gently flickered in her

eyes.

Hathaway smiled as she held the cake. “Go on, make a wish.”

Lorenzo felt his heart skip a beat, like something gently nudged him from inside.

He felt his Adam’s apple bob, then closed his eyes to make a wish.

Meanwhile, Jeremiah stood aloof on the second floor, watching the ambiguous and tender scene below, which made him. feel strangely uneasy.

Hathaway was holding a small cake, the candlelight quietly shimmering in her eyes. She looked exhausted, but her smile was soft and tender.

It was so warm, it almost hurt to look at it.

Jeremiah finally gave a cold smirk, lit a cigarette, and took a deep drag. His eyes were as cold as ice.

With a gentle breath, the candle flickered and went out.

Hathaway whispered. “Happy birthday, Lorenzo.”

The streetlight flickered, and for a split second, Lorenzo could’ve sworn Hathaway turned into that girl from his/memories, the one with the ponytail and faded jeans.

Something in his chest melted, all soft and warm,

He stayed quiet for a while, until the streetlight flickered again and Hathaway looked at him, a little confused.

Lorenzo didn’t explain. He said softly, “Thanks, Hathaway.”

Ten minutes later, Lorenzo went upstairs with the cake, in a great mood.

Jeremiah was sitting on the couch in the living room upstairs, a half-smoked cigarette between his fingers.

Lorenzo hadn’t expected his brother to still be up this late. Earlier that day, Lorenzo had sent him a 300 thousand dollars birthday gift, which was a nice surprise. “Jeremiah, it’s so late. Why are you still awake?” Jeremiah asked.

Jeremiah looked at the cake in Lorenzo’s hands and gave a flat nod.

“Want some? Hathaway made it herself,” Lorenzo offered.
