Chapter 85

The Kingsley family went all out for this family dinner.

The table was loaded with steaming, home-cooked dishes, and Preston and Melanie were busy serving Jeremiah, their voices warm and eager. “Jeremiah, eat up. Make yourself at home.”

Jessica had been the one to invite Jeremiah to dinner, and honestly, she hadn’t expected him to say yes.

Preston was grinning from ear to ear, clearly the happiest he’d ever been. “Jessica’s always been stubborn and has ridiculously high standards.

“But with you, Jeremiah, I can finally relax. You’re the only one who can handle her. Most folks wouldn’t dare try,

but

you

can.”

“Sure thing, Mr. Kingsley,” Jeremiah replied, squeezing Jessica’s hand. “Honestly, I can’t bear to be strict with her.”

Everyone around the table burst out laughing.

Jessica blushed lightly, her heart melting with sweetness.

Even Felix, her closest brother since childhood, had never seen Jessica like this, so gentle and bashful.

The sister he knew was always calm and poised, but now all that aloofness had vanished, replaced by a shy, tender side he’d never imagined.

Melanie and Charlotte exchanged a glance, both unable to hide their delight.

Elaine was already daydreaming about what would happen once Jessica and Jeremiah got together. She’d be Jeremiah’s family, and her status would be on a whole new level.

Even if Lucas wasn’t in the picture, there’d be plenty of other wealthy guys lining up for her.

And if Lucas ever wanted to ask her out, he’d have to take a number. No way she’d let him have it that easy.

By the time Elaine snapped out of her daydream, Preston and Spencer were already deep in a work conversation, and she caught the name, Conrad.

The name meant nothing to her, but as soon as she heard Whitmore Group, she immediately got the picture.

She knew all about Whitmore Group. After all, Hathaway worked there.

‘Seriously, what’s so special about Whitmore Group? They are another company that got steamrolled by Blackwood Group, she thought.

Preston brought up Whitmore Group because, with Jeremiah’s help, his factory still couldn’t outperform them. He was hoping Jeremiah would lend a hand and give them a bit more backing.

But Jeremiah replied calmly, sounding surprisingly humble. “Honestly, Whitmore Group’s stacked with talent these days. They’re really picking up steam.”

Preston was caught off guard. Jeremiah was never one to hand out compliments to the competition, so hearing him made it sound like he actually thought highly of Whitmore Group.

Jessica was caught off guard, too.

Jeremiah had never take: Whitmore Group seriously before.

But now, every patent Whitmore Group filed seemed to line up perfectly with the ideas in his own head. Jeremiah felt like they were outpacing him, always a step ahead, and the pressure was starting to build.

He’d never felt this kind of pressure before.

Seeing everyone’s surprised and uncertain expressions, Jeremiah smirked, “Don’t worry about it, I’ve already got people digging into it. We’ll know more soon.”

Melanie quickly nudged Preston, sounding a bit reproachful. “It’s not every day Jeremiah comes over for dinner. Give it a rest with the work talk and let him actually enjoy his meal.”

Elizabeth chimed in gently, “Jeremiah, go ahead and eat.”

The Kingsley family went out of their way to make Jeremiah feel valued and welcome, treating him like the most important guest at the table.

Just then, Jeremiah’s phone rang. His eyes darkened as he picked it up, got up from the table, and walked over to the window before answering. “Go ahead.”

As he listened to the call, a flicker of disbelief crossed Jeremiah’s face, so subtle he didn’t notice it himself. “Wait, you’re saying it’s Hathaway? Not Avery?”

“The one who’s always able to nail my train of thought, always predicting my next move is Hathaway?’ Jeremiah wondered.

The voice on the other end was certain. “The R&D team has confirmed it. No doubt about it. The core idea came from her.”

Jeremiah said quietly, “Got it.”

He hung up and walked back to the table.

Everyone at the table turned to look at him. Elizabeth, Preston, Melanie, and the rest all waited for him to sit down before continuing.

Jessica noticed his expression and asked with concern, “Jeremiah, is something wrong?”

“It’s nothing, some work stuff,” Jeremiah replied.

He sat back down, picked up his fork, and kept up his usual calm and polite front, quietly finishing the meal with the Kingsley family.

While the Kingsley family made polite conversation around him, Jeremiah responded with a few absent-minded words. But his mind was clearly somewhere else.

Only Jessica noticed.

She’d heard him mention Hathaway on the phone now.

Jessica clenched her fork hard and thought, ‘Seriously? Hathaway has to stir up trouble on a day like this? If she keeps this up, I swear I won’t let her off the hook!”

After dinner, Jeremiah didn’t stick around long. The Kingsley family walked him out. He’d driven himself, and his car was parked a short distance away.

Jeremiah strode toward his car, his posture straight, but Jessica could sense a hint of urgency in his movements.

He opened the car door, turned back, and gave a brief nod to everyone as a farewell, then bent down and slid into the driver’s seat.

The engine gave a low growl as the car shot off, smooth and fast, leaving nothing but a sharp streak of taillights behind. Felix
