Chapter 91

Avery headed straight to the office that afternoon and only came back when it was time for dinner.

Conrad showed up for dinner as well.

As Conrad took his seat at the head of the table, he noticed that though everyone was there, the dinner felt much quieter than usual. Avery, who was normally a chatterbox, barely said a word tonight.

“Nothing happened at the company, right?” Conrad asked.

Avery answered, “No, nothing’s wrong.”

“I want to move back in,” Avery said.

Conrad frowned. “Move back in?”

He glanced at Celeste, who looked stunned, clearly caught off guard by this.

Sylvia smiled gently. “That’s not your call. It’s up to your wife.”

Ever since Avery and Celeste got married, they’d always head back to their own place after dinner to enjoy some time alone. But now that they were having a fight. Avery suddenly wanted to move back in.

“Mom, I want to move back in too,” Celeste said softly, her voice calm and steady, not a hint of grievance in it.

Hathaway felt like her heart was being stabbed with needles-every word hurt.

‘Maybe I really did mess up this time, she thought.

As soon as Avery finished dinner and headed upstairs, Hathaway darted after him and grabbed his tie. “If you make Celeste upset, you’re in big trouble with me,” she warned, her heart aching with every word.

“The one who’s upset right now is me, not your precious sister-in-law,” Avery said, shrugging her off as he loosened his tie.

Hathaway tried to explain, “Calvin only said the girl he liked was already married-he never said he still liked Celeste! When I called her a wife, I wanted to make it clear that nothing could ever happen between us.

“If I’d known he was into Celeste back then, I never would’ve said that.”

Avery gave her a frosty look. “Just stop explaining.”

Hathaway sighed, “I owe both Calvin and Celeste an apology. Okay, let’s forget it and move on. Name anything you want, I’ll get it for you”

Avery paused, thinking, ‘Seriously? The one who’s supposed to cheer me up hasn’t bothered yet!

Hathaway pleaded, “Come on, let it go for my sake, okay?”

She was about to say, “And please, don’t take it out on Celeste,” but right then Celeste walked in. Hathaway quickly clammed up, called out, “Hey, Celeste,” and made a quick exit.

When Avery saw Celeste walk in, he still felt a bit awkward. He pulled on his camel trench coat and said, “If you don’t want to stay here, let me know.”

“No, it’s not that,” Celeste replied quickly. “I want to stay with Hathaway too. She’s always been really good to me.”

Avery gave her a look. “So Hathaway’s good to you, but I’m not?”

“No, that’s not what I meant,” Celeste shook her head. “You’re heading out this late?”

“Yeah, going for a walk,” Avery said, and headed out.

Once the door clicked shut, Celeste was left alone in the room. She stood there quietly for a moment, lost in thought.

She walked over to the window, lifted the curtain slightly, and peered outside.

The night was thick and heavy. The motion-sensor lights in the hallway dimmed, and Avery’s silhouette melted into the shadows.

Later that night, Avery and Celeste got into a fight.

Hathaway was dead asleep and had no idea what was going on.

Sylvia woke up in the middle of the night and went to comfort Celeste.

Conrad came over a little while later, got the full story, and gave Avery a piece of his mind.

The next morning, Hathaway woke up completely clueless about what had gone down the night before.

She muttered inwardly, ‘Avery’s got more attitude than talent, and he still has the nerve to act tough with Celeste? Calvin’s way hotter and richer-if Avery loses her, he’ll be the one sobbing. But as the sister-in-law, I know I should keep out of it.

After breakfast, the tense atmosphere at home was too much, so she slipped out and headed to work.

The next day, Hathaway accidentally dozed off at her desk. When she woke up and checked her social media, her eyes lit up -her notifications and follower count had shot up overnight.

She frowned when she saw the latest post-a photo of herself sleeping so vulnerably, her lashes softly lowered, cheeks with a gentle blush, hair a bit tousled, lips naturally pink, and skin so fair it was almost translucent.

She didn’t have to think about it-she knew exactly who was behind this. Who else but her bored-out-of-his-mind brother, who’d used her fingerprint to unlock her phone and posted that photo without asking?

The comments were blowing up: [Baby sis’s skin is flawless!]

[A kind of effortless, delicate beauty.]

[I want to kiss her.]

Hathaway’s eyes dimmed. ‘Seriously, do I have to resort to crazy tactics to get followers?’ she thought, her face dark with annoyance as she immediately deleted the photo.

She wanted to confront Avery, but he was nowhere to be found.

Thinking about how Avery and Celeste still hadn’t patched things up, and seeing how down Celeste had been these past few days, it honestly broke Hathaway’s heart.

So, on the sly, Hathaway ordered a bouquet of red roses in Avery’s name, hoping it might lift Celeste’s spirits a bit.

But for all her careful scheming, there was one thing she never expected-

Celeste was already gone-she’d moved back in with her folks.

The bouquet she’d picked out with so much care never reached her.

Chapter 91

The next day, Avery was nowhere to be seen.

Since he was supposed to attend a party at noon, Hathaway had to go in his place.

Luckily, Evelyn was going too, so at least they could keep each other company.

When Hathaway and Evelyn arrived, they spotted Jessica standing beside Jeremiah, whispering something to him. They were in front of a famous painting, and Jessica was probably sharing her thoughts about it.

Jeremiah, refined as always, tilted his head to listen, a gentle smile lingering on his lips.

It was a far cry from his usual aloofness.

When he smiled, there was a refreshing calm and steady grace about him-clean-cut and quietly confident. He didn’t need to show off; he had that glow about him, making him the one everyone noticed in a crowd.

Lucas was there too, and the moment he spotted Hathaway walking in, a devilish smirk curled on his lips. He took his sweet time pulling out his phone and held it up for her to see.

On the screen was that candid shot of Hathaway napping, but Lucas had gone full mischief mode-he’d photoshopped on round piggy nose, blushing cheeks, and some ridiculously cute cartoon pig ears.

She instantly knew he was up to something. The moment she saw the screen, her face darkened more. She pretended to walk away, then spun around and snatched his phone right out of his hand.

She immediately swapped out the lock screen, deleted the photo from his gallery, and made sure it was gone for good. She had to dodge Lucas while deleting everything, with Evelyn running interference.

The two of them made such a fuss that everyone nearby couldn’t help but stare.

Jeremiah glanced over at the commotion they were causing, then went right back to listening to Jessica talk about the painting.

Elaine grumbled quietly to herself, “Seriously, what a piece of work Aren’t you and Lucas supposed to hate each other?”

Lucas kept his sour face, but didn’t make a scene until the host finally arrived.

Hathaway chatted with the host for a bit, catching up on how Conrad was doing lately. Then the host showed her to the lounge and offered her a seat to relax for a bit.

Evelyn grabbed a plate from the buffet and brought it over.

They barely ate anything before feeling full.

The party hall was filled with soft music and lively chatter. Before long, Lucas and Melanie came over and took a seat on the sofa beside them.

As Lucas was about to say something, Hathaway’s phone started ringing.

She answered the call.

The place was so noisy, Hathaway had to listen twice to catch what was being said.

Suddenly, she jumped to her feet!

Not far away. Jeremiah was chatting with Mr. Clark when he caught sight of Hathaway-he froze mid-sip, then quietly set his glass down.

Jessica noticed that though Jeremiah was still talking to Mr. Clark, his focus had shifted entirely to Hathaway.
