Chapter 92

Chapter 92

Jeremiah wasn’t the only one stunned.

Evelyn was caught off guard too. She reached out and tugged Hathaway’s sleeve. “Hathaway?”

Jessica’s face fell; she clearly didn’t like how Hathaway was eyeing someone else’s boyfriend.

The next second, Hathaway rushed out, leaving her bag behind and everything else forgotten.

Just then, Jeremiah’s phone rang.

He answered it without showing any emotion.

“What did you say?” he asked.

Jeremiah, usually so unreadable, suddenly looked like he’d seen a ghost. His face turned grim, and he hung up, his brow tightly knit.

Jessica and Lucas asked what was wrong, but Jeremiah stood there, silent, his eyes cold enough to freeze anyone in their

tracks.

Just then, Calvin’s phone rang. He answered, his voice full of disbelief. “Conrad died of a heart attack?”

That set off a wave of shock. Evelyn blurted out, “What? Hathaway’s dad? No way, this has to be a lie, right?”

“How could this happen?” Evelyn gasped.

Her face went pale with fear as she grabbed Hathaway’s forgotten bag and rushed out after her.

Jeremiah strode over to the floor-to-ceiling window, his gaze heavy as he stared outside. The next second, his eyes went

wide in shock.

He saw Hathaway take a hard fall.

Jeremiah spun around, about to rush out.

“Jeremiah,” Jessica called out.

She hurried over and gently grabbed his arm. “Lucas already went after her

Lucas had followed Hathaway out, planning to drive her to the hospital. From a distance, he saw her fall.

He was about to rush over and help, but she scrambled to her feet, pain forgotten, and threw herself into the rush of traffic, desperately flagging down any car she could.

Soon, a car she vaguely recognized screeched to a halt, and she practically dove inside. The driver hit the gas, racing toward the hospital.

Hathaway thought the driver looked familiar, but she couldn’t place him. Her mind was spinning, stuck on one thought: ‘How could this be happening?’

Her whole body felt hollow and weak, as if she was trapped in a bizarre nightmare she couldn’t wake up from.

Her father’s love was long-lasting and solid, a source of nourishment and strength that carried her through life.

After time-traveling, she d done everything she could to avoid the regrets of her previous life, hoping that this time, things would finally turn out differently.

But after all the twists and turns, fate still dragged her right back to where she started.

In a daze, she remembered her father’s gentle, worried voice.

“I’ll set aside some money for your wedding gifts. Lorenzo isn’t the head of the Blackwood family, and I’m afraid he won’t be able to provide for you by practicing medicine.”

“If you ever get married, I’ll tag along too-buy one, get one free.”

“The thing I’m most proud of in this life isn’t how much money I made, but having you and Avery by my sigle.”

“Why” Hathaway whispered, her voice trembling.

A raw scream tore from Hathaway in the car.

‘Why did Dad still die, though Jeremiah didn’t do anything this time? It shouldn’t have happened’ Hathaway thought, despair flooding her.

‘I thought I knew better, Hathaway berated herself, bitterness flooding her heart.

‘I don’t deserve to be happy, she whispered inwardly.

She was crashing down from heaven to hell, forced to relive the nightmare all over again.

The sky was heavy and oppressive, making it hard to breathe.

Sylvia’s cries tore through the house, leaving her on the verge of collapse-she sobbed so hard she nearly fainted again and

again.

Celeste was drowning in regret, remembering how she’d been arguing with Avery and worrying Conrad in his final days. The guilt washed over her like a tidal wave, and she couldn’t stop sobbing.

Avery was dressed all in black, his face locked in a cold, unyielding mask. He didn’t utter a single word, carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.

Bloodshot eyes betrayed his exhaustion, but he kept moving-silently arranging the funeral, welcoming guests, and handling every last detail.

Every Whitmore relative had rushed over, and the air inside and out was thick with sorrow. Sebastian was already on a plane, racing against time to get there.

Two days later, the funeral was held with great solemnity.

The Blackwood, Reed, Montgomery, and Harper families-longtime allies of the Whitmores-showed up in full force, every face clouded with grief as they came to mourn and honor his memory.

Jeremiah’s gaze fell on Hathaway.

She stood there quietly, no hysterical sobbing-just looking completely empty, like she was drifting in midair, unable to touch the ground.

Evelyn and Lorenzo stayed close, with Evelyn hugging her every now and then, crying so hard she could barely breathe.

But Hathaway knelt there, spaced out, not a single tear in her eyes. Eleanor came over to comfort her, but Hathaway didn’t say a word. Eleanor told Lorenzo to stick with Hathaway, wiped her eyes, and walked away.

It wasn’t until the funeral was over and they returned home that Hathaway, watching Celeste exhausted and busy, finally

realized how deeply she had wronged her.

If fate was determined to repeat the tragedy of her previous life, then the worst mistake Hathaway had made was dragging her innocent sister-in-law into the Whitmore family’s quagmire.

“Sis, I I’m so sorry,” Hathaway whispered, her voice trembling.

‘Could you divorce Jeremiah?’ Hathaway wanted to beg, but the words stuck in her throat.

She opened her mouth, but no matter how hard she tried, the rest of the sentence wouldn’t come out-each word felt like i was cutting into her soul.

Guilt and despair crushed her, making it hard to breathe. Hathaway pressed a hand to her burning forehead, her vision went black, and she went limp, passing out right there.

Celeste screamed.

Sebastian was quick on his feet, striding over and catching Hathaway before she hit the floor. He turned to Avery, who had rushed over, and said, “Take care of your mom. I’ll take your sister to the hospital.”

With that, he lifted Hathaway into his arms.

As the car pulled away from the Whitmore residence, Hathaway, lying in the back seat, was jolted awake by the bumpy ride.

She didn’t cry or throw a fit. She stared out the window at the pitch-black trees, her voice barely audible, like a wisp of a soul.

“Uncle, take me to the cemetery,” Hathaway said quietly.

Sebastian shot her a look in the rearview mirror, his brows knit tight. “Stop messing around. Do you know what time it is? We’re going to the hospital first.”

“I’m not going to the hospital!” Hathaway’s voice broke out, her tears bursting forth uncontrollably.

“I have to see my dad I still have things I need to tell him. Please, Uncle, take me to the cemetery,” Hathaway begged, her voice shaking with desperation.

The Whitmores were calling Sebastian, but he didn’t bother picking up-he already knew what it was about.

“Your mom probably knows you passed out. Go home and see her You’re grown up now, Hathaway. Life goes on, you have to keep moving forward,” Sebastian said, his voice gentle but firm.

Hathaway wouldn’t listen. She kept begging her uncle to take her, her sobs so raw her voice was nearly gone. “I’ll do better tomorrow, I promise, let me go to the cemetery tonight, please.”
