She rose with a graceful shrug. “The ice cream didn’t spill. The chocolate sauce, however…”

“Say no more.” I laughed, setting my purse aside and rolling up my sleeves. “I’ll take over from here. Thank you for watching them.”
“Always my pleasure.” She kissed my cheek before leaning over the tub to kiss each boy’s damp head. “Be good for your mother. No more water on the floor, okay?”
“Okay, Nana!” they chorused, though Alexander was already eyeing the cup they used for rinsing with suspicious intent.
Once she’d left, I knelt beside the tub, immediately getting my blouse wet as Ethan enthusiastically showed me how his battleship could “dive underwater like a submarine, Mama!”
“Very impressive,” I said, helping Alexander rinse the shampoo from his hair. “Five more minutes, then it’s time to get out.”
“Ten minutes!” Alexander countered.
“Seven,” I offered.
“Eight,” Ethan jumped in, always the mediator.
“Seven and a half, final offer.”
They exchanged a look, their twin telepathy at work. “Deal,” they said together.
As they resumed their battle, I found myself studying their faces. Would I ever have more children? The thought had rarely crossed my mind in the past four years. The twins filled my heart completely. But Thomas might want his own children someday. Was that something I could imagine? Another pregnancy, another baby-or babies-to raise alongside Alexander and Ethan?
“Mama, you’re making your thinking face again,” Alexander observed, poking my cheek with a wet finger.
“Am I?” I smiled, tapping his nose in return. “What am I thinking about, then, if you’re so smart?”
He considered this seriously, his gray eyes-so like his father’s narrowing in concentration. “Hmm… probably about a big building you’re making. Or about Uncle Thomas.”
My heart skipped, Was I that transparent? “Why do you think I’d be thinking about Uncle Thomas?”
Alexander shrugged, returning to his battleship. “Because when you look at him, you make the same face. Kind of happy but also like you’re trying to solve a puzzle.”
