Chapter 505: Not Running For Miss Congeniality

"I don’t know if I’m amazed or not, but you are quite ignorant, aren’t you?"

Lola’s brows crinkled as her eyes fell on Scarlet. Her lips curved downward instantly as she stared at the woman leisurely enjoying a cup of hot tea.

Scarlet slowly met her gaze and cocked her head to the side. "I said what I said."

"Hah." A light scoff escaped Lola, eyes narrowing as she turned to fully face the woman. "And?"

But Scarlet simply shrugged and took another sip.

Goodness, Lola thought, weighing whether to entertain this poison so late at night. She decided not to and was about to continue walking when Scarlet spoke again.

"Was it lack of pride... or pure ignorance?" Scarlet rose to her feet, holding her cup and saucer with elegance before side-eyeing Lola. Her lips curved ambiguously. "Either way, it’s pathetic that you’re causing disharmony... and you don’t even know it."

She paused and huffed, eyes scanning Lola up and down condescendingly.

"Lola Young, you might have gotten your way in here by seducing the master. But that can only carry you so far. Being a matriarch isn’t just about being someone’s wife."

With that, Scarlet resumed her steps like her words were polite commentary instead of venom.

But Lola’s voice cut through, making Scarlet halt.

"What’s so bad about it?"

"Hmm?" Scarlet looked back, only to see a smile that didn’t reach Lola’s eyes.

"Being the proud wife of Atlas. What’s so bad about it, Scarlet?" Lola tilted her head slightly. "I am a woman. And even if I could choose between being a successful business owner... or a wife and mother to my children — the latter sounds better."

She crossed her arms, her voice and aura steady.

"I guess there’s no point talking about it with you since you are neither a mother nor a wife." She smiled and shrugged. "It’s good to see you every once in a while, Scarlet."

How ironic, since they always seemed to meet... like recently, when they were in the same convoy and ate in the same restaurant. It wasn’t that Lola didn’t see her. She just chose not to acknowledge her.

"Good night, Scarlet," she murmured, turning away to continue her original path. But after a few steps, she paused again and looked over her shoulder.

"One more thing: I am not blind, deaf, mute, nor missing any toes. In fact, I am perfectly fine and complete. But if my silence is called ignorance, then so be it."

Her brows lifted knowingly.

"I didn’t run for Miss Congeniality when I married my husband. Don’t get on my nerves... this applies to your men, too."

Lola flashed her a serene smile before resuming her stride. This time, she didn’t stop or look back. But the moment her back faced Scarlet, her eyes glinted sharply.

Sure, Lola hadn’t done much physically in this place the past month. But that didn’t mean she was unaware of the growing whispers in the manor. She didn’t need to hear them directly—she could feel them.

They did not like her at all.

Lucky for her, she expected that much.

A secret society would never welcome an outsider. Even Atlas once mentioned in passing that they disliked him. He didn’t detail his hardships, but she understood enough.

If Lola thought Scarlet feared losing more toes, she was wrong. Scarlet had already lost two. Having survived the pain once, she wasn’t afraid of it anymore.

When Lola reached the other wing — where Allen said Renny and Chunchun were taken—Allen was already waiting outside the room.

"Are they inside?" She asked, and Allen nodded. "How is it?"

Allen pressed his lips together, glancing at the door. "The boss summoned an expert vet of the Order. They’re checking both Renny and Chunchun. I didn’t stay for the whole thing, but I think..."

He trailed off and met Lola’s gaze. She simply nodded in understanding.

"You don’t have to tell me," she said gently. "They’ve lived so long. It’s already a miracle. I don’t think prolonging..."

Lola bit her tongue before she finished that thought.

"They are family," Allen said, giving a shallow smile. "Aside from the fact that none of them are ready... they are family. They need time to accept it, Miss Lola."

It wasn’t about prolonging their lives, but preparing for the goodbye.

Lola pressed her lips into a thin line but didn’t speak further. She chose not to go inside and instead stayed outside with Allen.

Silence fell on their shoulders as neither of them spoke. They just stared at the door, waiting for it to open. Then, Lola’s soft and quiet voice broke echoed, breaking the building silence in the corridor.

"Say, Allen..." she hummed, turning to Allen. "Is my presence here causing too much trouble for my husband?"
