Chapter 559: Today’s The Day!

[Lola]

Lola kept tapping the earpiece in her ear, but it still wasn’t working. Her expression dulled with every tap, and she let out a heavy sigh each time.

"What the heck?" she grumbled. "Why is this thing still not working?"

The Bellemonte captives looked at her, then exchanged glances. They shrugged before shifting their attention to where she was sprawled in the truck. The lackey who had joined them in the back moved a little closer to her.

"Boss Pretty," he cleared his throat. "Is something wrong?"

Lola lazily blinked at him. "This thing isn’t working." She pointed at her earpiece. "There should’ve been a connection by now."

She had already added a grace period for communication to be established, but even then, nothing. This couldn’t go on. She already had two of the three Bellemonte guys.

If she were lucky, then Izu and the others must have found—or at least gotten a lead on—where the remaining one was.

After all, there was no guarantee anyone was on Gigante. What she’d gotten from the bar could’ve just been another piece of valuable information.

"If the connection isn’t established," one captive—still tied, though this time by their own hands—muttered, "then the ones who were supposed to finish the job must’ve run into trouble."

"You can’t operate in this place without proper communication," the other added.

Lola snapped her eyes at them, biting her tongue to stop herself from saying that the people tasked to do this were the people the Bellemonte had sent, and that there might be a huge misunderstanding between them. But to these two, she was their salvation.

And since she was currently their only ticket out, it was better to exploit that belief for now.

"Never mind that," she waved dismissively. "Someone else will fix the problem."

The someone in her mind was Haji.

After all, Haji and Lola shared the same brainwave in situations like this. She was certain he would’ve noticed the lack of telecoms. Knowing him, he’d already be doing something about it.

"Anyway," she continued, pointing a finger upward and circling it lazily, "that guy we’re looking for... where do you think he’s headed?"

The Bellemonte captives cleared their throats, their expressions turning solemn.

"When we escaped, the five of us had a few destinations in mind," one of them said, slipping a hand free from the rope and drawing lines in the dirt on the truck’s floor. "Gigante. Rimi."

He explained while Lola and the lackey listened closely.

"These places were under strict rule by the governors, but they were also easier to move through," he continued. "However, we ran into trouble on our way to Gigante. Since then, we’ve been off our original route."

"In other words," the other added, "after the first confrontation, we briefly agreed that that town would be our rendezvous point."

Of course, they knew the first two who had sacrificed their lives to buy them time were most likely dead. Even so, they held onto hope. Reaching the rendezvous point would be a miracle, but they wanted to believe in that miracle.

"So your other friend might’ve run to the rendezvous point?" the lackey hummed.

The two men nodded.

"We’re sure he’d be there," one of them said, slipping his arm back into the rope. "If he managed to escape since our capture, he would’ve reached it by now."

"Or he left the territory," the lackey pointed out, then bit his tongue, realizing he might’ve said something they didn’t want to hear.

To his surprise, the two men let out shallow breaths and smiled.

"Then that would be better," one of them said quietly. "Our lives in this territory haven’t been easy. If even one of us survives this hell, that’s better than all of us dying here."

They had gone through hell together. They were also part of the group that had opposed the methods of this partnership, but survival had forced them to swallow their pride, even their humanity.
