Chapter 564: The Family’s Mistake

"Is he smoking?!"

Just earlier, Haji was losing his mind. Then, they assumed he was crying. And now... he was smoking?!

Their faces twisted as Scarlet pushed herself up to her feet. She approached the metal bars, her eyes fixed on the smoke drifting from where Haji lay. Chuck and the other two followed, staring at him as well.

Haji’s back was still facing them, so all they could see was the smoke curling into the air as he puffed on it.

"What are you doing?" Scarlet asked, her brows furrowed. "Smoking in this situation? Are you crazy?"

Haji didn’t answer immediately.

"I quit a long time ago." He moved his arms, and to their surprise, the rope around him had loosened. Once he gained some mobility, he dragged the chair behind him and kicked it away.

Then he rolled onto his back. The cigar Jarvis had tossed earlier was clipped between his teeth. He slowly reached up, removed it, and turned his head toward the cage.

"But killing that motherfucker is more important than quitting smoking," he said calmly, nothing like the man who had snapped moments earlier.

What they didn’t know was that Haji hadn’t been crying.

Nor had he lost control after Jarvis’s words.

Haji was no longer the same kid that bastard once knew.

The only reason he reacted the way he did was because of the cigar Jarvis had tossed at his feet. By exploding in rage, he distracted Jarvis from stomping on it and extinguishing the ember. After all, Haji’s eyes had locked onto it the moment Jarvis pulled it out.

To Jarvis, it was just another expensive cigar.

To Haji, it was the only tool he had to burn through the ropes.

So when the others thought he had gone quiet because he was crying, that wasn’t it. He had stopped because he’d already reached the cigar and clenched it between his teeth. And while the four of them were doing everything they could—even foolish things—he had been burning his way free.

"Living in this place... robs you of emotion," Haji added as he pushed himself up to sit. "People here are too busy surviving the day."

He winced slightly, inspecting the raw skin around his wrist where the ropes had scraped him.

The others stared at him in stunned silence, their expressions blank for a long moment.

"So earlier, you..." Tyga trailed off, pointing at him. "...you weren’t crying?"

"That was acting?" Kean added.

Haji smirked and jerked his chin toward Chuck. "I’m not a pussy like him." He stood and strode toward the cage.

"Hey! What do you mean by pussy?!" Chuck snapped. "I’m no pussy! I just don’t know anything about the mission you threw me into!"

"Fine, fine." Haji waved him off and crouched in front of the lock. "We don’t have time. If that guy is keeping us alive, it means he has another agenda. And that usually means bad news."

He tugged at the padlock, but nothing.

So he scanned the room, searching for anything that could help.

Scarlet watched him closely, her gaze lingering on his injured wrist. He was bleeding, yet acting like it didn’t matter. She snapped her eyes back to his face as he stood and moved again.

"Who is he?" she asked. "And why is he calling you that?"

"Just a bastard," Haji replied as he knelt, running his fingers along the cracks in the floor. "And he’s calling me that to mock me."

He paused, then huffed quietly.

"A man I used to look up to," he continued. "And the same man who took my life away."

He glanced at Scarlet, his expression steady but hardened. "He’s my uncle—in name only. My grandparents’ adopted son."

"They took him in when my grandfather’s cousin died," Haji went on as he resumed searching. "The man was starving. Whatever sins his family committed, my grandfather pardoned him and gave him everything."

He clicked his tongue and shrugged. "A mistake he realized too late."
