[Lola]
"Gigante?" The lackey’s voice echoed inside the truck as he looked at Lola with slight confusion. "Boss Goddess, are we changing our destination? A little detour?"
"Yep." Lola snapped her eyes toward the boss driving the truck. "Let’s drop by Gigante first."
The boss knitted his brows, glancing at her through the rearview mirror. "Chosen One, I can take you to Gigante, but why are you suddenly changing destinations?"
Gigante was mostly a peaceful town, and its residents were submissive to the regional power. At least, they were known for not causing trouble. They were resilient people who had survived for years despite the harsh reality of the territory.
"Hm." Lola leaned back. Instead of answering him directly, she cast a glance at the two tied men. "It seems the first two you were talking about are alive... though barely."
"What?" both Bellemonte captives gasped, eyes widening at the sudden revelation. "What did you say? They are — they are alive?"
Their voices trailed off as memories of the standoff surfaced — the last image of their two comrades staying behind so the other three could escape. They could still remember like it just happened yesterday.
Relief flooded their chests, their hearts tightening, while their minds spiraled with unanswered questions.
They had been almost certain those two were dead.
There was no way they could’ve survived a confrontation like that—outnumbered and cornered.
"I don’t know the full story," Lola continued, her tone knowingly calm, "but somehow, they were saved by an old lady in Gigante. Lucky for them. Of all the towns, they ended up there and ended up in the care of one stubborn old woman."
Because if those two had collapsed anywhere else, Lola was certain they would’ve been left to rot. Life in the territory—especially for innocent civilians—was harsher than words could properly describe.
Not to mention, anyone labeled an enemy of the governor was often shunned. Even those who wanted to help had to prioritize their own survival.
Except for a few foolish souls.
"Anyway, my men moved them elsewhere," she added. "So, they’re not there anymore, and they’re safe — for now."
"Wait." The lackey blinked, the gears in his head turning as he processed the scraps of information from her. He raised a finger, then pointed at the bound men. "If their friends were helped in Gigante... doesn’t that mean Gigante is in trouble? Did the governor find out?!"
The moment those words left his mouth, a sharp screech tore through the air.
The truck came to an abrupt halt, jolting everyone forward. The bound captives rolled slightly, while Lola and the lackey grabbed onto whatever they could.
"The hell!?" The boss slammed his foot on the brake and turned sharply toward the back. "Chosen One, what exactly are we going to do in Gigante?!"
Earlier, he had no objections about passing through the town. But heading there during trouble? No way in hell he’d drive straight into that.
"Goddess, did you forget we’re on the run?!" he shouted, breathing hard. "And now you want to go to Gigante, where the people who were probably tipped off about us are?!"
The lackey paled as the implication finally hit him. Slowly, he turned to Lola, who hadn’t changed her expression at all.
"The people of Gigante are the most loyal people in the territory—"
"They’re loyal, yes—but not to me!" the boss snapped. "Hell no! We’re not going there. Over my dead body."
"Over your dead body?" Lola repeated, her calm tone making his breath hitch. "Are you sure?"
For a moment, the boss faltered.
"See? It wasn’t that hard. Anyway, as I was saying," she continued casually, "those two brothers of yours were tended to by the people of Gigante. Unfortunately, even though my men managed to move them with the help of their rescuers, their location has already been compromised."
She glanced back at them. "And since you’ve been in this territory long enough... I’m sure you already know what that means."
Both men’s faces darkened. Their gazes dropped, their thoughts racing.
Of course, they knew.
If Gigante had helped them—and that fact was discovered—the town would pay the price. In this place, guilt by association was more than enough. One person’s ’sin’ could doom an entire community.
When they finally looked back at Lola, they nodded.
"Gigante it is," one said.
"We’re in," the other followed. "Count us in."
Lola smirked. "Of course you are. Otherwise, I’d have to kill both of you, and then those other two with my men. After all, I don’t save people who don’t understand gratitude."
Because in the end, everyone here wanted the mission to succeed.
But Lola?
Her mission was simple.
Everyone comes back alive. And by everyone, she meant those part of the Order, and not the Bellemonte men.
