The Billionaire Twins Need A New Mommy! novel Chapter 587

Chapter 587: They’d Know Exactly Why

Lola had only planned to drop by First Street for a brief moment to see Long. She knew the guy, and she had to make sure he stayed on her side. By that, she meant slapping him with some hush money.

After all, if not for some shared history with the guy, he would’ve asked for upfront payment before letting anyone in.

To her surprise, just as she was nearing Five District, some folks flagged her down. They were people Gigante men knew. That was how they learned that mercenaries were already headed to District Five. Had it not been for that information, Lola’s plans would’ve gone down in flames before they even reached their destination.

Hence, with the help of the locals, they managed to reach Five District without getting noticed. From there, they snuck in and moved in silence.

She asked the Bellemonte men—the two with her—and the rest to survey the area. They split into three groups, four if they counted Lola. After all, Lola went off on her own and, coincidentally, saw some men checking the underground tunnels.

Since the rest of the enemy group split up to check another tunnel after checking this one, she jumped on one of them, and they both slid into the manhole. That, however, was not part of the plan. Fortunately, she didn’t get hurt.

Lola rose to her feet, dusting her hands as she caught her breath.

"Oh, wow." She blinked, looking at the men a few steps from her, then at the crowd right behind him. "Oh, wow."

"Oh, wow?" the crowd echoed in murmurs, unsure why she would repeat it twice.

"I think..." she muttered, genuinely stunned by her luck this time, "I’m actually divine."

The man snapped out of his thoughts and looked up, only to pause when he realized Lola was standing near the manhole.

"Wait—" he started, marching toward her, but then walked past her instead. He wordlessly grabbed the unconscious man by the feet and dragged him to the side. "They already checked this entrance. We’re lucky we weren’t found. But I think they’re checking the other tunnels underground."

As he dragged the body, he explained the situation.

Once he moved the unconscious man somewhere less visible, he started looking for something to tie him up. After all, the one Lola knocked out was still alive.

"We don’t know how they found out about us," he continued, his voice shaky as his heart pounded. "But I don’t think the tunnels are safe. What I do know is that if they don’t find us, they’ll go down the tunnels themselves and check."

What these people were searching for wasn’t just one person, but an entire town’s population. Even if Gigante had dwindled into a small community, it was still a large group.

And in this place, they might have found some twisted sense of liberation watching Gigante burn.

At the same time, worry and anxiety followed. Because tonight, they were freed from the shackles of their home—but they knew tomorrow, or in the coming days, another shackle would form around their ankles and wrists.

They would be imprisoned again by hunger, death, and the life of rats.

They could all see it clearly: they might end up living in these tunnels.

The grim mood in the underground grew heavier at the man’s words. Fear was clear in their eyes, even in the dim light. Yet beneath it all was a faint hope as they looked at Lola.

Lola rested a hand on her hip, not dwelling on the eyes fixed on her. Her mind was focused on what the man had just said.

Her eyes narrowed. "How did they know?" she asked quietly, turning to them. "Where did you dump the vehicles?"

The man answered immediately, telling her they followed her instructions exactly. They dumped the vehicles used to escape Gigante in a town that would lead the mercenaries elsewhere if found—a misdirection meant to buy time.

Clearly, it hadn’t worked.

"And when you arrived here... they were already here?" She pressed, earning nods from him and everyone else. "That’s strange."

It was almost as if the enemy had read her movements—and Lola didn’t like that at all.

As she mulled it over, a head suddenly ducked into the opening above.

"Godde—"

The boss’s breath hitched as rapid clicks of weapons echoed, his head in the manhole suddenly looking like it might get turned into a beehive. His eyes widened as they darted to Lola, the man beside her, and then to the faint glints deeper in the tunnel.

He couldn’t see them clearly, but he knew—someone else was down there. More than one.

Lola already had her hand raised on instinct, stopping them from firing.

"He’s safe," she said, looking up at the boss. "He’s with me. What’s up?"
