Silence followed the words that echoed in the underground facility. It wasn’t like Long shouted, but somehow, it put them all in a state of blankness.

Long shrugged, pushing himself away from the group and sauntering toward the patients. "Your choice — I already made mine, and I’ll stay here and play doctor. As for you, only you can decide that."

"Would you fight for freedom..." he trailed off as he took a few steps back before turning his back on them. "...or stay shackled and hope it’ll bring you safety and peace."

Everyone remained silent, staring at Long in utter quiet. When he stopped beside the patient to check on them, one of the men stepped forward.

"What does that even mean?" he barked.

Long glanced over his shoulder, about to open his mouth to spell out the obvious, when Florida spoke.

"This region is, if not in a pre-state of war, already in one," he stressed, each word carrying a grim tone, making those who hadn’t considered it pale. "And we either fight back, or become numbers on the casualty list."

It wasn’t like Florida and Ransom hadn’t thought about it. They simply hadn’t entertained it and didn’t want to exaggerate the situation. After all, from another perspective, it didn’t necessarily look that way.

But since Long had already mentioned it—and with how quickly the situation had escalated—it wasn’t far-fetched.

They couldn’t just finish their mission and leave. Not when so many lives—innocent lives—were already on the line. The granny, the people of Gigante—they hadn’t yet found out what truly happened there, but they assumed the town was in serious trouble—and then there were these men, and Long.

Sorry wouldn’t change anything, nor would it make things better, but he felt like it still needed to be said. At the very least, someone should acknowledge it.
