The first time Lola arrived in this territory, things were just as bad as they were today. Those in power trampled on the weak; intimidation and oppression were everywhere. Right and wrong in this territory were determined by the governor’s mood or by those under him.
Calling it twisted was putting it lightly, and for the longest time, it had always been this way.
Those who had lived for generations could only look to the sky, pray quietly, and hope the devil wasn’t listening. For the younger generations, bowing their heads and gritting their teeth was the only thing they learned—often even before they knew how to speak.
In a sense, one could tell that none of them had ever witnessed something like tonight.
Gigante burned to the ground, its residents ganging up on the mercenaries they once feared, and claiming Five District as their own.
"Wow, we’re winning this war."
The boss’s remark barely registered in Lola’s ears. Her reaction to the scene unfolding before her made her freeze. The boss beamed and turned toward her.
"Goddess!" he exclaimed excitedly. "We are win—"
"No. Shit."
He scrunched his nose. "Huh?"
"Holy..." Lola gasped, blinking as she stared at the chaos. "What have I done?"
"What are you talking about, Goddess?" The boss tilted his head. "Wait, wait. Is something wrong? Are we losing?"
Panic crept into his chest as his eyes darted across the scene. All he saw were residents overwhelming the mercenaries, and those positioned above freely picking off threats.
"It doesn’t look like we’re losing," he blurted out, only to hear Lola mutter,
"This looks like a rebellion." Slowly, she turned to him. "Does this look like one to you?"
"Huh?" His face twisted. "Isn’t that your goal?"
"Does it look like that’s my goal?" she shot back. "Where in my words or actions did I ever say I was planning that?"
The boss hummed, staring upward as he replayed everything she had done so far.
First, she ambushed his group and forced them into servitude. Then she stormed one of the governor’s bases and rescued the Bellemonte men who were meant to be publicly executed.
Not to mention, she had left her signature behind to taunt them.
After that, they caused chaos at the checkpoint to break through. Thankfully, those forces hadn’t caught up with them yet for some reason.
And then she burned the entire town of Gigante to the ground along with the mercenaries inside.
Now, District Five was in complete chaos.
When the boss turned back to her, his mouth opened and closed. "Goddess, holy shit! Everything you’ve done screams rebellion!" he blurted out. "Are you telling me this wasn’t your intention at all?"
She didn’t answer, but he gasped dramatically anyway.
The boss leaned closer and asked nervously, "Then what are you going to do if your intention was rebellion?"
"...." Lola shrugged and looked away, watching the residents’ energy and fighting spirit ripple through the air. "Probably something... like this, I guess."
"Are you actually insane?" the boss blurted out, only to bite his tongue when she shot him a sharp side-eye. "Anyway, whether or not it was your intention, this is already happening."
A shallow breath escaped her. "I guess that’s the situation now," she hummed. "Come on. Let’s help them. Clean this place up and think about what to do next."
"Goddess—" the boss stepped closer, trying to get her attention.
Lola shot him a look before turning back to the two men. "I’ll talk to you later. For now, tell me everything that happened."
"Yes," Florida said, lowering his head.
Lola turned to Ransom. "There are injured residents. Check their wounds before sending them to Long."
Ransom bowed and walked off immediately, executing her orders without hesitation. At the same time, the Bellemonte men approached her.
"Goddess," they said, stopping a few steps away.
Meanwhile, the boss leaned in and whispered, "Goddess, about the mole... I think I know who it is. This is important."
Lola ignored him, focusing instead on the two men before her.
"Good work," she said, nodding. The Bellemonte men smiled briefly, clearly not expecting praise. "Some townspeople are hurt. Help Ransom and focus on those who need medical attention."
As Lola addressed them—the very people the Order was meant to rescue—Florida watched from the side.
For some reason, her coldness toward him and her easy praise of the two men felt unpleasant.
Not because he wanted approval.
But because he knew unlike them, he and the others had judged her before ever knowing who she was.
And the realization struck like a slap in the face.
