Later that day...
"Sir, is it all right that only the three of them go in there?" Izu inquired, his eyes on Allen, who was drinking his coffee while going through another round of profiling.
Allen raised his brows and turned to Izu, then to Florida, who paused while fixing the stack of papers on the table.
"They’ll be fine." Instead of Allen, Hugo answered mid-yawn. "First Brother is with First Sister and Slater. Those three won’t die even if Henrik Bellemonte brings a battalion with him."
Allen chuckled, watching Hugo finally get up from his chair. "I don’t think they’d survive against a battalion, but I don’t think the master would agree to go if he felt like he was in danger."
"First Brother is First Brother. He’s always right." Hugo shrugged, yawning once more. "I’ll be back. I’ll just check on my wife and maybe shower."
Dragging his feet, Hugo walked out of their current headquarters, unbothered by whoever might be watching him. Once he was out, Izu and Florida snapped their eyes toward Allen.
"Haha," Allen chuckled at them, giving them one reassuring nod. "Don’t worry about them. They’ll be fine."
"Sir, can I ask another question?" Florida inquired without beating around the bush. "I’ve been thinking about this lately, but why is Baby not here?"
Baby had always been around the Order, and they used to bump into him often. However, he hadn’t been here at all, which worried both Izu and Florida.
"Do you..." He trailed off, gulping. "...suspect that he may be the mole, or one of the moles?"
"..." Allen blinked, darting his eyes between the two, who were looking at him eagerly.
After a second, a shallow breath escaped him before he smacked his lips. "You already know the case and have watched Yuri’s recording. Aside from me and the big boss, she trusted no one. Considering Yuri and Baby were friends, we found it suspicious that she wouldn’t trust him."
"It’s better... to make sure first," Allen explained. "After all, every order from the big boss and every move we’ve made until now all went into Baby’s ear. In fact, everything Baby knew got compromised, and the things he didn’t know went smoothly."
He was referring to the first request for DNA testing, which Baby was aware of. There were other things as well. However, when Atlas ordered Allen to stop the test, and they moved discreetly, keeping his request to Penny confidential, the result turned out differently.
Izu and Florida’s expressions twisted slightly as they listened to Allen’s explanation. A part of them didn’t want to believe this. In fact, they were tempted to argue and say that Baby was the most loyal person in the Order.
There was no way...
"The master was most in disbelief when Sir Hugo brought this up," Allen added, watching the duo lift their eyes to him. "However, it is necessary. Nothing personal — just work."
"Speaking of work, let’s get back to it," he continued. "We still need to make sure we’re gathering the right people."
Having said that, Allen dragged a chair and sat down. Following Yuri’s tracks was easier than what they had been doing. After all, there were many people in the Order, and it was hard to know whether they could trust them or not.
To cut down the workload, they decided to choose people who could fit this mission and focus on investigating them first. Even so, it still required a lot of brainpower because merely asking them, "Can we trust you?" was foolish. At the same time, they couldn’t simply look at someone’s profile and believe it at face value.
As for Izu and Florida, they looked at each other and sighed faintly. Nodding at each other, they helped Allen, trying to push aside the saddening thoughts about Baby.
I can only hope that... we are wrong, they both thought.
