Chapter 792: Don’t Look

Meanwhile...

"Ugh..." Kiara grunted as she held her throbbing head, pushing herself up to sit.

Once her vision cleared, she finally noticed the room she was in. She glanced down at the bed and at the other person lying beside her.

Efraim, Henrik’s son.

"Hey." She reached out, wincing as pain throbbed through her head. Shaking it lightly, she gently tried to rouse him. "Are you okay?"

Forcing herself to move despite the pounding in her skull, she scooted closer and checked Efraim’s pulse. Fortunately, it was steady.

"It seems he just passed out as well," she whispered before scanning the bedroom.

It was simple but spacious.

Kiara crawled to the edge of the bed and dragged herself toward the door. She twisted the knob and pulled, but it only rattled.

"I knew it," she breathed, looking around more carefully. When she spotted the window, she approached it and slid the curtain aside.

Aside from the thick smoke rising in the distance, there was no one on the ground below. She let out another deep breath, biting her lip. She had passed out earlier, but she remembered hearing Lola’s voice.

"First Sister isn’t here," she muttered, worry creeping in.

She knew Lola had already taken the twins — Kiara had checked on them out of instinct. So she assumed Lola wouldn’t still be around. However, it seemed Lola had come back for her.

Kiara pinched the bridge of her nose as her head throbbed again. She glanced at the bed where the boy lay, then began searching the room thoroughly — every corner, every drawer.

She had no idea what was happening, but she knew she needed something to defend herself in case someone came to move them. Kiara had learned self-defense growing up, and after she married Hugo, he had taught her a few more tricks.

But against professionals, she wasn’t confident. Not to mention, with a boy beside her, she felt responsible.

"Here!" she exclaimed softly when she spotted a paper clip tucked between the pages of a Bible in one of the drawers.

Twisting the clip open, she marched back to the door and pressed her ear against it. She listened for any sign of a guard, then crouched to inspect the lock. There was a small hole, but not enough to confirm whether someone was outside.

"Doesn’t matter," she whispered as she inserted the straightened paper clip into the lock.

Kiara carefully twisted it, holding her breath as she maneuvered the pin.

Hugo said I just have to do this...

Click.

Her breath hitched at the sound. She gulped, nerves prickling as she stepped back. Mustering her courage, she slowly opened the door and peeked outside.

Surprisingly, there was no one guarding it.

"Was it because we’re not a threat?" She murmured, thinking they truly underestimated her.

But then again, it was just Kiara and a boy.

"No, no. Don’t get distracted," she told herself, shaking her head. She quietly closed the door again and hurried back to the bed. "Hey, hey."

She shook Efraim more firmly this time, already pulling him upright. Thankfully, she didn’t need to carry him unconscious as he began to groan.

Slowly, Efraim opened his eyes, brows furrowing in confusion.

"Who—"

"We have to move," Kiara urged, looking at him with determination. "Can you get up?"

He blinked a few times before he recognized the same lady who had come to his room and stayed with him.

Kiara helped him sit up, and he looked around.

First, I have to reach the ground floor. From the looks of it, we’re probably on the third or fourth floor.
