THUD!
Silo and Derek blinked blankly as they stared at Lola, who had just taken down another person who crossed their path. To make it even more shocking, Amala had covered for her—even while two men were dragging her.
The duo—Derek and Silo—were more or less just Amala’s feet at this point.
Lola wiped her cheek with the back of her hand before pressing the button to drop the magazine and reload. They had gotten out of one facility, only to end up in another because of the people in the open yard.
Now, she had to deal with almost the same number of enemies.
I don’t have a lot of ammunition left, she thought, having already looted the others.
Looking back at them, Lola tossed the handgun in her hand. Derek caught it on instinct.
"That’s the last," she said, and Derek quickly passed the handgun to Amala.
"What does that mean, Lola?" Silo asked, only to see Lola unsheathing the sword slung across her back.
"It means samurai time." She raised her brows briefly, almost as if joking.
"Seriously?" Derek blurted under his breath, only to hear Amala chuckle softly.
"Let’s just get out of here," Amala said weakly. "Or, better yet, leave us somewhere safer."
"That can’t happen," Lola breathed. "I don’t trust this place."
For someone who had lived four lifetimes, I’m sure he has a last resort.
At least, that would be what she would do if she were the cardinal. So it was best for them to get as far away as possible.
With that, Lola huffed and turned her back on them.
"Let’s go."
With nothing but a sword in her hand, Lola led the three down the path ahead. But as they moved, she stopped, spotting someone from the corner of her eye.
"Izu!" she shouted, rushing toward the window. "IZUU!!!"
Even Lola didn’t know how she managed to spot him from that distance, but she knew it was him. Maybe it was his height, his shadow, or the way he walked. Perhaps she had been observing him more than she realized—enough to recognize him instantly.
In another building, Izu paused when he heard a faint call. Turning his head, he saw something glinting, like a sword being waved out a window. When he narrowed his eyes, his breath hitched.
"Madam!" he shouted, his heart racing. They had finally found her—the one person their team was prioritizing above all else.
Without hesitation, Izu pressed his earpiece. "I can see Madam. She’s in the other building on our left—second floor, eighth window. She’s holding a sword..."
As his voice rang in everyone’s ears, the others with him turned their heads and caught sight of the glinting blade.
"We’re close. I’m coming to her," another voice responded, prompting Izu to step forward and signal Lola. "Madam!!"
He pointed toward the group approaching the building she was in. Lola barely understood his signals, but when she saw men moving toward her location, her expression cleared.
Turning to Amala, Silo, and Derek, she nodded.
"Found our guys," she breathed, grinning. "We’re safe."
But just as she said that, she caught sight of another man approaching from her side. Sliding her gaze toward him, she immediately recognized the symbol of the church—the same symbol carried by everyone she had fought.
"Lola—"
