The way to Vanessa’s apartment was slow. Because of the rain and it was the time for white-collar workers to go home, there was heavy traffic.
After almost half an hour, they reached the apartment and headed straight to Vanessa’s floor.
Alaric knocked on her door and waited for it to open.
However, it did not budge.
He knocked harder and louder this time while looking over at his boss, whose complexion was now pale and dreary.
When the result was still the same, Landon took his place and banged his knuckles against the door. Each time his hand met the wood, Alaric couldn’t help but flinch. The way his boss was knocking on that door was as if he was trying to knock it over.
Of course, he doubted that would happen.
Then, suddenly, Alaric hurriedly stopped Landon.
"Sir, enough!" he tried to grab his arm, but Landon easily overpowered him.
Alaric did not give up. How could he? After seeing the blood painting his boss’ knuckles?
Landon continued. He felt the skin on his knuckles being peeled off as he knocked. But he ignored it. It was a small price he was willing to give if it would make the people inside the apartment come out.
Sadly, even after bloodying his hands, no one answered him.
Instead, people from the other apartments on the same floor started coming out of their rooms, watching the spectacle and whispering amongst themselves.
"What’s happening?"
"That scared me. I thought the building was being demolished!"
"What is he doing? Was he dumped by the person living in that apartment?"
"Who knows? But maybe you’re right."
"Tsk, tsk, look at his face. He’s so handsome. But he must have been dumped."
"Shouldn’t we call the police? He’s making a lot of noise and disturbing us!"
Alaric was alarmed when he heard they would call the police. If the police caught and reported Landon, the CEO of West Palais Corporation, for a noise disturbance, it would have been the biggest story of the year! He absolutely cannot let that happen!
"Boss, let’s go. People are watching us, and it wouldn’t be good if it’s spread around!"
Landon glanced at the people watching him. He turned away and ignored them.
He was about to continue knocking on the door when a voice was heard behind him.
"Stop. You won’t find what you’re looking for in there."
Turning around, Landon saw a young man standing mere feet from him with two grocery bags in his hands.
Landon’s eyes flashed with anger. "Who are you?"
He couldn’t be five years younger than him. Was he the reason why Lucy didn’t come to meet him? Was he the reason why she signed the divorce?
Just thinking of it is filling his blood with fire.
The young man backed away when he sensed danger. He replied, "I’m the new owner of that apartment."
"New owner?" Alaric interjected.
Landon stepped forward and questioned the young man, "What do you mean new owner? What happened to the two ladies who lived here yesterday?"
"I don’t know about two ladies, but a woman sold the apartment," answered the young man.
The young man came back and stood by the door.
Landon’s eyes went past the young man and looked behind him.
A part of him hoped the young man had lied to him. However, the interior of the apartment was slightly different. Signs of having just moved in were scattered around.
"Take this," the young man held out his hand. "I thought it was trash, but... I saw a bit of the words written in it. It’s strange, though. The apartment owner is Vanessa. But the name written on this paper is Lucy."
Landon initially wanted to turn around. What Vanessa left behind was irrelevant to him.
But the moment Lucy’s name was called, Landon reacted immediately.
He looked down at the young man’s hand.
In his hand was a folded paper.
It was slightly crumpled on the edges. But Landon took it from the young man.
His hand shook as he thought Lucy had left him a letter. Maybe she left a clue of her current whereabouts. Or a farewell letter for him to read.
Whichever didn’t make him happy.
He didn’t want a letter. He wanted Lucy.
Still, his curiosity won over him.
And Landon had never regretted something so fast.
The letter showed him what he had feared the most.
