Lucy stared at Landon’s message for a long time. Her heartbeat was racing against her ribcage and breathing seemed to become harder to do.
This was the first time they had contacted each other for the past three years. Although Landon didn’t know it was her, Lucy still felt suffocated by the thought that he was getting closer to her.
She stared at the message for a bit longer until her breathing calmed down.
Lucy felt lightheaded, but she resisted the surge of emotions that were about to spill through by ignoring him.
She didn’t need distractions right now. What Lucy needed to do was finish all her plans so she could go back to her daughter quickly.
So instead of returning home after a day of working, Lucy stayed and continued her work, hoping it would somehow make her forget him.
She didn’t know how long had it been since she got lost in painting the walls, but the sky was now dark with stars dusting all over it. The guard also came just in time as she snapped out of her focus.
The guard looked surprised when he saw her.
"Miss, you’re still here?" he asked her gently.
Lucy grabbed a towel and wiped the paint from her wrist.
"I’m working overtime so I can finish quickly. Is there something wrong?"
The guard looked around her. The lights inside the place were not turned on. How did she see in the dark and paint?
"It’s time to close the gates..." he paused briefly before he continued, "But if you wish to continue, I can wait a bit longer."
Lucy thought she should continue. The faster she could finish the job here, the faster she could go home. But she really shouldn’t inconvenience a considerate old man like the guard.
"Thanks, but I think I’m done here."
Lucy left the building as soon as she packed her things. The guard was kind enough to follow her in the dark and make sure she got out safe and sound before parting ways with her.
Taking the taxi, Lucy thought of going home. But Landon’s message earlier had messed up her rhythm somehow. So, she went to the only place where she could get her mind off of him.
The taxi stopped beside a crowded establishment. Considering the people lining up in front of the door, the place was popular.
"We’re here, Miss."
Lucy thanked the taxi driver before paying him.
She strode towards the bar and lined up with other people. Perhaps, she made a haste decision to go there without thinking because now; she was gaining more attention to herself. Especially after she realized that she hadn’t changed out of her paint-stained dress.
She must’ve looked ridiculous in their eyes.
Lucy ignored the attention she was getting. She wasn’t there for them, anyway. Two enormous walls of human meat and muscle greeted her. The bouncers, she guessed, scanned her from her head to her toes. Their signature piss-off eyes frowned at what they were seeing.
And Lucy felt guilty she didn’t come here with her hottest outfit.
"Do you have an ID?"
Lucy produced her ID and let the bouncer check it carefully.
After a long stare, the bouncer returned her ID and let her in.
The bar was even more crowded inside. The beam lights were going crazy everywhere as countless bodies writhed to the rhythm of the blasting music the DJ was playing in the back. Lucy headed straight towards the bar counter and ordered her drink.
Lucy sat alone at the bar, drinking while calmly watching the boisterous crowd go crazy on the dance floor. As time went on inside the bar, more eyes instinctively moved towards her. She could feel it in her skin as the fine hair on her body seemed to stand up.
