Lucy couldn’t move with the old woman’s hand wrapped around her thin wrist. She could easily remove it, but she found herself unwilling to hurt Old Penny’s feelings while she was in this state.
Having no other choice, Lucy waited until the old woman’s eyes closed before calling Samuel.
After another fifteen minutes, Samuel pulled up in front of the apartment building with his car. The middle-aged man entered the store and found Lucy in the kitchen, drinking a glass of water from the pitcher.
"Where is she?" Samuel asked, panting lightly as his eyes moved across the place.
Lucy pointed toward the bedroom and said, "She’s asleep."
Samuel breathed a sigh of relief and thanked her. "Were you staying with my mother for a long time? I’m really sorry. My wife had a small accident, and I had to run back home." He paused briefly to run to the room and open the door to check on his mother before he said, "My mother didn’t cause you any trouble, did she?"
He was used to his mother causing trouble for other people. Some might understand when they realize her true condition, but most would get upset being pestered around by an old lady they didn’t know. Some of the tenants in the apartment building left and had the same complaints; they couldn’t bear dealing with his mother anymore.
Thus, Samuel was afraid that Lucy would leave as well.
Lucy shook her head. "No, she didn’t. She fell asleep right after I took her inside."
Samuel breathed a relieved sigh again. Then, he offered Lucy a cup of tea and some snacks to compensate her for the trouble. Lucy tried to reject them, but Samuel dumped the snacks on her before letting her leave their house.
Outside the door, Lucy looked down at the snacks in her arms, wondering when she would be able to eat them all.
When Lucy entered her apartment, exhaustion soon bore down on her like a dead weight. Her body slumped against the door as she placed the snacks on the cabinet beside the door and she thought of how she should deal with Kai.
Kai was Landon’s best friend. As evidenced by how he tried to persuade her to reconcile with Landon, he might have already told Landon that she was back in Grid City.
Lucy wished she hadn’t wanted to go to the bar earlier. Then, she wouldn’t have met him.
But it was inevitable after Landon messaged her.
Letting her fingers run through the strands of her dark hair, Lucy let out a deep sigh. She didn’t think that getting her revenge would take so much of her energy. She wasn’t even at the opening scene yet. Everything seemed so taxing to her.
Despite the tiredness she felt deep inside her bones, Lucy didn’t want to give up.
As Lucy gathered her thoughts and calmness soon returned, she moved across the room and opened her laptop. She looked through her emails and saw countless messages from her VIP clients asking her when she auctioned off her paintings again.
Lucy had earned enough money from selling her paintings. She thought she could finally quit painting and do something else, but more and more people became interested in her and asked around to meet her.
She refused them all. Her identity as the painter Corone will never be revealed. But the more elusive and hidden she was, the more people started to take notice of her.
And surprisingly enough, more wealthy clients requested an order of her painting. The price of her paintings was so expensive, to the point that only a selected few could afford it!
Lucy paused as a video call request slid in the middle of the screen.
