“Noah,” He says softly, setting down a small bouquet of pink roses, which I’ve come to learn are her favorite, on the chair beside me. “How is she?”

“Still unconscious.”

He nods, his eyes moving to the window, to the pale figure lying motionless beyond the glass. “She looks fragile.”

“She is,” I say before I can stop myself. The word feels strange leaving my mouth

Gunner studies me for a long moment. Then he sits. “You’ve been here for two days.

“So?”

“So, you’ve hated hospitals since Chloe died, yet you’ve been sneaking here every day just to watch her, though you’ve hired bodyguards to do that.” She tilts her head slightly. “So, tell me, Noah… why are you still here?” (5

The bodyguards are stationed outside this room. Even though they’re the best I could find, there’s that nagging feeling that pushes me to be here.

I exhale, long and slow. “Don’t start.”

“I’m not starting. I’m asking.”

His tone is calm, but it cuts through me more sharply than any feeling ever could. He waits, patient as always, eyes clear but searching.

“You made it clear you wanted nothing to do with her,” He says finally. “You said she was a mistake. That you wished you’d never—”

“I know what I said,” I snap, my voice echoing in the quiet hallway. I drag a hand through my hair and let out a sharp breath. “I know.”

He doesn’t flinch. “Then what changed?”

The question lingers between us.

I look at Sierra again, her skin pale under the fluorescent light. The monitors hum like they’re mocking me. I want to say something – anything – but the truth knots in my throat.

“I don’t know,” I mutter finally. “Maybe because this is my fault.‘

“Noah-”

“No, don’t.” I shake my head. “I left her alone when I knew someone was after her. There is no excuse for that.”

“Anger doesn’t make you guilty of someone else’s sins.” He says, but his words do nothing to ease the guilt drowning me.

“Maybe not,” I whisper. “But it makes me directly involved.”

He sighs. We sit in silence. The hum of machines fills the space between our breaths.

Finally, he speaks. “I know you don’t want to hear this. You don’t want to accept this… but even if you’re fighting it, you care for her. This? What you’re feeling? Goes beyond guilt.”

Before I can argue, he continues, “My advice? Accept what you’re feeling. It was terrible that you lost Chloe, but she’s gone and she’s never coming back… This is a second chance at love, Noah and you can build something beautiful with Sierra if you can only allow yourself to.”

I hear him, but every cell in my body fights against his words. Against the thought of betraying Chloe and starting something with Sierra.

“The only reason she’s still single is because she didn’t want to date, but Noah, Sierra is the kind of woman men snatch up… don’t wait too long because by the time realization hits you, it might be too late.” 1

I stare at the roses for a long time, my mind, heart and soul fighting against anything and everything that’s related to Sierra.

My phone buzzes again, pulling me from those thoughts. This time it’s an email from Grant. He’s sent me the footage. I open it, watching the grainy video on loop Brook standing by her car, her phone pressed to her ear. Her expression was unreadable. The timestamp blinks, then suddenly freezes and static floods the frame.

I lower the phone, jaw tight. There’s someone else behind this. Someone with access. And I’m going to find out who.

The sound of footsteps draws my attention. Two men approach from the end of the hallway–Officer Mark and Calton. Their faces are unreadable, but there’s something in their eyes. THat grim seriousness that only comes with bad news.
