Chapter 139
Honestly, I don’t even understand how I’ve managed to work with her all these years. The day I was told she’s going to be part of my team, I went home, drank two whole bottles of wine and cursed the universe for doing me dirty like that.
“And not to mention she’s been acting really strange and saying weird things,” Brandon says quietly.
My pulse ticks up. “What kind of weird?”
“She was talking about the project,” Benji says, leaning forward. “And she said, ‘Soon, Sierra will be out of the way, and we can finally do things properly.“”
The room goes still.
Carl adds quickly, “We thought she meant your maternity leave or something. But the way she said it, I don’t know. It was off.”
No one except my family, the doctors and nurses from that day, know that someone is after me. The police told me to keep it that way, and those nurses and doctors were sworn to secrecy.
I stare down at the blanket, the words echoing in my mind. Jocely has always resented me, but this… Could she really have meant it literally?
To them, it might just be something weird she said, but to me, this is very incriminating. It can be interpreted in different ways, but knowing someone wants me dead and then finding out Jocelyn said something like that, I don’t think it’s just a coincidence.
I mask my unease with a small smile. “I wouldn’t take anything Jocelyn says too seriously. You know how she is.”
Benji shrugs. “Maybe. But still, it’s been weird without you. The lab’s a mess. Half the data files are unorganized, and she’s been making changes to your research logs.”
My head snaps up. “What?”
Rose waves her hands. “Nothing serious! Just formatting and renaming files. We saved copies before she touched them.”
Relief and anger tangle inside me. Jocelyn’s always had a competitive streak, but tampering with my work? Is she trying to sabotage me?
I exhale slowly. “Thank you for keeping backups. I’ll deal with it once I’m back.”
Carl looks doubtful. “You’re not really planning to come back soon, are you? You just survived a car crash.”
“I’m not going anywhere,” I assure him. “Maybe I can’t handle chemicals with a broken hand, but I can still supervise. Once the doctor clears me, I’ll be back.”
Benji grins. “You have no idea how happy that makes me… Working with that witch is like being sentenced to hell. Ah, fuck. At this point I’d rather be in hell than work with her.”
The rest don’t say anything, but they nod in agreement.
I shake my head, smiling faintly. “Don’t worry. Jocelyn may be acting team leader now, but that’s temporary. I’ll make sure of it.”
Their collective sigh of relief fills the room, and that just tells me everything I need to know.

Chapter 130
Rose leans forward, eyes soft. “And how’s the baby?”
That question still feels fragile. I place a hand over my stomach.
“We’re okay,” I say quietly. “The doctor says everything looks good.”

“That’s amazing,” Carl says, visibly relieved. “We were all so scared when we heard about the accident.”
Benji grins, his eyes lighting up. “Yeah, but at least now everything’s okay and we still get to plan your baby shower!”
Rose arches a brow, folding her arms. “Seriously? Shouldn’t I be the one this excited about planning it? Not that I’m not, but you’re a guy, Benji. You’re supposed to be groaning about this stuff, not bouncing with joy.”
“Hater,” Benji clicks his tongue dramatically. “Who says men can’t get excited about baby showers?”
Before Rose can fire back, Carl chimes in with a smirk. “This kinda reminds me of that TikTok video… what was it again? Oh yeah–‘Why are you gay?“”
“Shut the fuck up, Carl,” Benji shoots back, then bursts into laughter, and the rest of us follow.
God, moments like this… damn I love my team. Well, everyone except Jocelyn.
