As he moves to speak quietly with the guards outside, I sink onto the edge of what’s left of my couch, pressing my palms into my eyes. “This is insane, Lilly. Completely insane. I can’t live with him.”

She says gently. “You’ll just be staying there. Temporary.”

I shoot her a look. “Don’t sugarcoat it. You know this is crazy.”

She sighs, sitting beside me, her voice low and steady. “Sierra, I know it’s awkward. Complicated. The last thing you want. But safe of going to a safe house, this is the best option.”

My throat burns. “Even if he’s the father of my baby, it doesn’t mean we should be under the same roof. I can’t-”

Lilly’s tone softens, tender but unyielding. “Then don’t think about him. Think about you. Think about the baby.”

My gaze drifts to the shattered photo frame on the floor, a frozen smile behind cracked glass. My old life, splintered and unreachable.

“I just wanted normal,” I whisper. “A quiet life. A healthy pregnancy. And now this.”

Lilly wraps an arm around me, warm and steady. “You’ll get that, honey. Just not today.”

I draw in a shaky breath, trying to quiet the tremor in my chest, but my pulse won’t slow. My mind spins with different thoughts that won’t quiet down.

By the time Noah walks back in, I’ve already made my choice. Not because I want to, but because I can’t see another way.

He stops in front of me, his expression unreadable. “We should go.”

I’ll never be ready for this. Never.

I study him before exhaling. “Okay.”

His shoulders ease, just barely. “Good. Let’s get you out of here.”

I rise slowly, one hand instinctively on my stomach. I’d promised my baby I’d keep us safe, no matter what it cost. And right now, that means swallowing my pride and following the one man I swore I’d stay away from.

Lilly squeezes my hand. “You’re doing the right thing.”
