Nova stops bouncing, her bright smile fading into a worried frown as her gaze falls on Sierra’s bandaged hand.” What happened to your hand, Auntie Sierra?” she asks, voice small and full of concern.

Sierra’s kneels down so she’s eye level with them and gives Nova a reassuring smile. “Oh, sweetheart, it’s nothing too bad. I had a little accident and broke it—but see?” She wiggles her fingers playfully. “All fixed up now.”

Nolan leans closer, his brows furrowed. “Did it hurt?”

Sierra chuckles softly. “A little bit. But I’m okay now, promise.”

He hesitates, then takes her uninjured hand in his tiny one. “You’re really brave,” he says, almost in a whisper.

Sierra’s breath catches. “Brave, huh?”

Nova nods so hard her curls bounce. “Yeah! Like a superhero! Except… you don’t wear a cape. You wear pretty dresses instead.”

Sierra laughs, the sound soft but full of emotion. “A superhero in a dress, huh? That’s a new one.”

Nova grins. “You could still have powers. Maybe healing powers. Or heart powers.‘

For a heartbeat, Sierra’s smile trembles. “Heart powers,” she repeats quietly, brushing a strand of hair from Nova’s face. “I like that one.”

Something inside me twists, ugly and hot. She’s always been good with words, hasn’t she? Always knew how to make people love her.

Before I can stop myself, I march forward, my heels clicking against the marble. The sound slices through the

moment.

“Alright, that’s enough,” I snap, my voice sharp, as my frustration and bitterness spill over

The twins hesitate, looking between me and Sierra.

“Can you play with us?” Nova asks hopefully.

Sierra opens her mouth to answer, but Noah beats her to it. “Not today, baby. Sierra still needs to rest.”

Nolan tilts his head. “Rest? Does that mean she’s staying here?”

Sierra glances at Noah before replying, “Just for a few days.”

Everything inside me stops and I feel like the world has just caved in, suffocating me in the process. My hands tremble, before I clench them.

Fuck! She can’t stay here. I won’t let her. I won’t allow her to take everything we’ve worked years to have. I won’t let her have Noah.

Nova squeals, clapping her hands. “Yay! We’re gonna have so much fun!”

I can’t take it anymore. “Enough!” I shout, louder this time. “Go to your rooms!”

The twins flinch, then burst into giggles and race up the stairs anyway, too excited to care that I snapped at them.

The thought of my sister’s children excited to hangout with Sierra just makes me want to pull my hair out. They’re supposed to hate her. To detest her existence like I do, not love her like she’s a fucking angel.
