Chapter 154
“No, you didn’t” Nova answers, excitement bubbling from her.
“She was… Every time we had a sleep over, she always started a pillow fight, but she’d end up losing and laughing so hard she’d fall off the bed”
Nova giggles while Nolan smiles. A genuine full smile that I haven’t seen since their mom died.
The room fills with chatter about Chloe. The twins ask questions while Sierra answers all of them.
The words sting. For a moment, I forget to breathe. Chloe’s name in Sierra’s mouth feels all kinds of wrong, given she hated Chloe. I can’t jump in. So far she hasn’t bad mouthed Chloe and that’s enough for me, for now.
They continue talking. I feel like a fucking intruder in their little world. I nod and respond where I can, but I’m not really listening. My mind’s running in circles, trying to understand this strange feeling pressing against my chest.
Sierra’s presence changes the air in this house. It’s been still, dead almost. I never changed anything after Chloe died, but tonight, with Sierra sitting here, it’s like someone’s cracked open a window and let the air in. Funny how it doesn’t feel as suffocating.
When dinner ends, the twins run off to play, their laughter echoing down the hall. I watch them go, realizing too late how light they sounded around Sierra. Lighter than I’ve heard them in months.
Sierra stands, gathering the plates. “I’ll help clean up.”
“You don’t have to,” I tell her. My tone comes out colder than I mean. “You’re supposed to be resting.”
“I’m fine,” she says, and I don’t argue.
She moves carefully, graceful even with one arm in a sling. I find myself watching her longer than I should, until she feels it and glances up.
“I wanted to talk to you,” she says quietly. “If you have a moment.”
I nod. “The study.”
She follows me down the hall. The sound of her footsteps is soft against the floorboards. Inside, I close the door
behind her.
Sierra stands near the window, her good hand twisting the hem of her sweatshirt. “I think we should talk about… living arrangements,” she starts. “About how this is going to work.”
I lean against the edge of the desk, crossing my arms. “You’ll stay here until you recover. After that, we’ll figure out something more permanent.‘
She nods, looking at the floor. “Noah, I know this isn’t easy with me being in your shared home with Chloe.”
“She’s dead” I say. “She has no say in this.”
It stings saying it, but I honestly don’t know why we are having this conversation.
“I know that,” Sierra replies, lifting her gaze to mine. “But we have to figure out what to tell our family is something ever slips. I’m not planning to stay here long but just in case.”
My jaw tightens. “I’ll think about something”
“You said already said that. I need to know what it is you’re thinking”
What the hell does she want from me? Can’t she just take my words as it fucking is?
She hesitates. Her voice is soft when she finally answers. “Look living under the same roof as the man who once swore he hated me is not exactly comforting… I just need a way to go about it, so there aren’t any frictions.”
The words hit harder than I expect. I look away, exhaling slowly.
“I don’t hate you,” I say shaking my head.
“Could have fooled me” she murmurs.
I can’t blame. To her and everyone else I hate her… but there was a time a didn’t, and she doesn’t know about that.
Silence stretches between us, until I finally speak.
I run a hand through my hair. “Listen. I’ll make sure you’re safe here. You’ll have everything you need. But that’s it. I’m not… I can’t promise anything else.” My voice hardens. “Don’t expect me to care about the baby or…”
“Me” she finishes for me, her tone quiet, steady. “I understand.”
