I wake up with a heaviness in my chest, the kind that sits right behind the ribs and makes breathing a little bit. difficult. I blink up at the ceiling for a long moment, trying to understand why I’m still here. Why I agreed to stay. Why Noah wanted me to stay, because nothing makes sense.

My eyes drift to the clock. It’s early. Earlier than I’ve been waking up and I know it’s because I have so much on my mind. I barely get enough sleep when I’m overthinking, and last night, that’s all I did before I could fall asleep.

I sigh. There’s no chance I’m going back to sleep, so I might as well get up and do something instead of wallowing in my thoughts.

I slide out of bed, brush my teeth, run a hand through my hair, and glance at Blackie, who’s stretching like he’s preparing for a day full of judgement. 1

You’re coming with me,I mutter.

He flicks his tail as if to say obviously, and hops off the bed.

I open my door quietly. The hall is silent. the air is cool and my footsteps echo lightly as I make my way toward the kitchen, planning to slip out the back for a walk around the estate to clear my head.

But the moment I step through the doorway, I freeze.

The twins are already seated at the breakfast bar, plates in front of them, swinging their feet in excitement. And behind the stove, wearing sweatpants, a fitted charcoal tshirt, and with hair messy from sleep, is Noah.

His back is to me, one hand flipping pancakes, the other holding a mug of coffee.

Nova gasps, her yell pulling my eyes from Noah. Sierra!

Nolan twists in his seat, eyes lighting up. You’re awake!

I blink, startled. Good morning,I manage, voice soft.

The twins greet me with enthusiastic good mornings, and then-

Morning.

Noah’s slightly turned, his messy hair falling over his brows. His voice is low and ragged, in a way that takes me back years.

I don’t look at him, but my body reacts anyway. That stupid, outofplace awareness that irritates me to no end. I walk toward the kids, and they each grab a hand, tugging me closer.

What are you doing up so early when you don’t have school like us?Nova asks.

I was going for a walk,I say, glancing briefly at Noah.

His eyes are already on me before I can look away and something flickers there. Something that I can’t quite read. After another long, weird look, he turns back to the stove.

I stand there feeling awkward as fuck. I don’t know what to do. Should I just leave, given that this looks more like a family kind of thing?

Before I can do anything, Nova grips my hand as if sensing that I was about to bolt out of there.

I’m so excited to show Miss Mira the drawing you helped me with yesterday, she says, excitement bubbling out

of her. Thank you, Sierra.

You’re most welcome, darling.I can’t stop myself from running my hand down her back.

It’s going to be the best drawing today!

No, it isn’t,Nolan cuts in. Mine is going to be the best.

No, it’s not. It’s mine. Sierra helped me with it.

She helped me with mine too.

I smile and cut in. They can both be the best.

They glare at each other before sighing at the same time. I always find it so interesting how in sync they are with each other.
