Chapter 199

A flutter goes through me when I read his message, and damn, the fact that Adrian checked up on me just an hour after I got home tells me everything I need to know.
I start typing a reply, but I don’t send it. My thumb hovers over the screen as I stare at the words.
What am I even supposed to say?
[Got home safe, thanks]
Too dry.
An emoji?
Ugh. No.
I hate this. I hate how suddenly I’m feel like a teenager again, trying to figure out how not to sound like a an overly excited desperate girl.
I take a deep, steadying breath, fingers poised to finally type something honest, when there’s a knock on my door.
Before I can even say anything, the door flies open and a pink blur shoots across the room.
“SIERRAAAAA!”
Nova hurtles onto my bed like a sugar–fueled missile, colliding with my lap. Nolan trails behind her with a much calmer, “Good morning,” as he climbs up after her.
I blink, dazed from emotional whiplash. “Good morning.”
“You didn’t bring cake yesterday!” Nova announces dramatically, pointing an accusing finger at me. “I checked the fridge. Twice. There is nothing.”
She seals her complaint with a pout so cute I feel my ovaries applaud. I swear, if I wasn’t already pregnant, I’d be suffering from a serious case of baby fever.
Nova props her head using her hands and asks me expectantly. “So where is the cake?”
With everything that’s happened, I completely forgot about the cake.
“I’m sorry, sweethearts,” I say softly, running my fingers through Nova’s curls. “Something came up, and I wasn’t able to buy any.”
“What came up?” Nolan asks immediately.
I mentally scramble, searching for a reply. Something simple but believable.
“I lost track of time,” I say, forcing a light tone. “By the time I remembered, the bakery was already closing, and there were no cakes left.‘
Nolan really studies me for a moment before giving a small, approving nod.
I breathe a quiet sigh of relief.
Sometimes I wonder how Noah handles him. Nolan’s mind feels like a lie detector with legs.
“That’s okay!” Nova chirps brightly. “You can make it up to us today!”

I wince. “I don’t think today is possible, love.”
Her smile drops. “Why not?
“It’s Saturday. Aren’t we staying in, like last weekend?”
Before she can answer, Nolan crosses his arms with the confidence of a tiny CEO and announces, “No, we aren’t. We’re going to the animal park and you’re coming.”
I blink at him hard. “I… what?”
Nova instantly clings to my arm like an adorable koala. “Pleeease! They have beautiful animals, and we can have ice cream, and cake-”
“Wait…” I mumble, overwhelmed.
“And popcorn!” she adds dramatically, tossing her curls.
“But–but-” My brain scrambles for footing but comes up empty.
“You have to come,” Nolan says simply, as if this is law written in stone. “We’re not going without you.
My heart stutters. Oh, heavens. These kids. These sweet, impossible kids will be the death of me.
I drag a hand through my hair. “I–I’ll have to check with your dad first.”
Honestly? I’m sure he’ll refuse. There’s no universe where Noah voluntarily spends a whole day with me and vice versa. We’d implode before lunch. It’s a walking, talking recipe for disaster.
I can’t even remember the last time we spent a full day together without fighting.
Maybe back in college before Chloe decided she wanted him back for good.
“No.” Nova shakes her head with dramatic finality. “There is no need.”
Nolan nods firmly. “Dad will just have to agree.”
Which basically means: They haven’t told their dad anything.
