Chapter 205
My legs refuse to move. They’re rooted to the floor as my mind tries and fails to catch up with what I’m seeing.
For a moment, I’m convinced I’m hallucinating. That my tired brain has finally snapped and started producing high–definition delusions. But then my gaze snags on Aunt Ava’s face. The way her eyes are as wide as saucers, the way her jaw is quite literally on the floor… and I know, this is real.
Her hair is pulled into a messu bun. Her hands rest neatly on her lap, fingers interlaced, yet her expression is the furthest thing from composed. She looks like she’s seen a ghost.
“What the hell?” Noah’s voice snaps behind me as he bumps into my back. “Why are you standing in the middle of the foyer…”
He doesn’t finish. He steps around me, clearly annoyed Until his eyes land on his parents who are staring at us like we’ve just walked in covered in blood.
For one suspended second, no one moves. No one speaks. We just stare at each other. Two pairs of eyes locked on me and Noah standing side by side, in the doorway of his home, looking for all the world like a family coming back from a morning out together.
The twins break the silence by squealing, changing direction and launching themselves at their grandparents.
“Grandpa!”
“Grandma!”
They finally tear their gazes away from me to catch them. Nolan throws himself at his grandfather like a small missile and Nova launches herself at her grandma. They laugh, that warm sound I’ve always loved and kiss the top of their heads.
For a moment, as they bask in their own little world, I become invisible.
Perfect. Maybe this is my chance. Maybe Noah can manipulate–reality enough to convince them I was never here. Maybe he can gaslight them into believing they hallucinated me. 1
So, very, very carefully, I turn.
Noah shoots me a puzzled look like he can’t understand why I’m moving like a cartoon burglar, but I ignore him. I’m almost at the door. Three more steps and then- 2
“Sierra Meyers!”
I freeze. Damn it. I was soo close.
I close my eyes like maybe if I can’t see her, she can’t see me, but Nope.
When I turn around, she’s still there, glaring at me, energy radiating with the intensity of a woman who raised four children and fears NOTHING.
“Where do you think you’re going?” she demands, one brow arching in that way that makes grown men confess to crimes they didn’t commit.
My soul leaves my body. Noah is fighting a smirk and the twins are already giggling.
I swallow. “Hi… Aunt Ava.”
“Don’t ‘hi‘ me,” she snaps, marching toward me with the authority of a general who has conquered nations. “Do

you think you can sneak away like some undercover agent?”
“I wasn’t sneaking,” I lie.
“Yes you were,” her eyes narrow at me.
“I would never do that.” I say too quickly.
“Yes you would,” Uncle Rowan says flatly, and I have to hide my guilty eyes.
“I was just going outside for fresh air,” I mumble, knowing damn well the lie is flimsier than wet tissue.
Next to me, Noah’s shoulders shake… He’s laughing. The asshole is actually laughing.
I honestly almost pinch him.
